The second I saw the cover art I was reminded of Hyakujitsu. Both centre around a dark haired pretty boy in the military and his devoted older blond companion, and both deal with pretty dark themes. Though they both comment on questionable morality and internal strife (both political and personal), in Hyakujitsu it's caused by outright war while Ilegenes has a more underground rebellion/academic atmosphere. Also while Hyakujitsu is straight up yaoi, Ilegenes just has a lot of subtext. I mean A LOT. Readers who like Hyakujitsu's action (in both senses of the word) might be frustrated by Ilegenes but the character development and emotional

Ah, I don't think you can read one without thinking of the other. Both are BL manga set in a decided military background. We have a dark haired MC who has a beautiful blond man stand by his side like a loyal dog. The MC is stubborn, bratty and never lets his weak side be known to the public, and his blond companion is the only one who knows the real him. The blond is also hopeless in love with our MC.
The only difference is that while Maiden is a flat out yaoi, Ilegenes has BL hits strewn all over, as it's technically a shoujo.
