Here's a good old Sword and Sorcery inspired animation.

I would say, that is one of the cleanest ones that I ever watch. I just turned in my old CRT and that was great. Good fights and fantasy at the right level.

I definitely recommend this for low fantasy appreciators like me. Nothing like the good old barbarians and red haired mystic swordsmans, but yeah. The story is not that deep and the turns of events are pretty unscaled and not as great as another japanese animations.

It does really catches the 80s fantasy set up and it is really nice. But it has the japanese ... stories touch and i think that's a little bit forgotten nowadays, but they are really good at the dark fantasy thing. Maybe because of the domination of the high fantasy of the animation industry.

For such cool looking cover art the anime itself is quite ordinary. MC is looking for revenge and helps some people along the way. Not much more to it than that. It's a little scifi but mostly it's just Conan the Barbarian. It does have some nice violence, but there's nothing over-the-top like some other OVAs out there. The animation quality is kind of a question mark. The issue is that it only exists on Laser Disc or a HORRIBLE quality DVD, so I'm left wondering what this would look like given a proper remaster. It's definitely worth watching, but also disappointing in that it ... doesn't stand out at all.

Honestly, Amon Saga really disappointed me. I went into this expecting a solid 80s fantasy classic — something with great action, atmosphere, and that old-school animation charm, but it just didn’t deliver. The story is your typical revenge fantasy, following a quiet protagonist who infiltrates a castle to avenge his mother’s death. There’s even a scene where a captive princess sees him sneaking out and instantly falls in love, which felt way too rushed and forced.

What truly made this anime fall short for me was the animation. Even for something made in 1986, it looked rough. I’ve seen older anime with far better animation and ... art direction. I even tried watching it in 1080p, hoping it would look better, but it didn’t help at all. The background music was another letdown, no emotion, no tension, just empty noise in the background.

I’ve watched a lot of old anime from the 70s and 80s, and I appreciate most of them for their creativity, but Amon Saga is one of the few that just failed to capture any feeling. Others might enjoy it for nostalgia’s sake, but for me, it was simply a missed opportunity.

A dull revenge fantasy that fails to live up to the magic of its era.
