Synopsis

With the arrival of a new generation of talented girls, another lively year at Seishou Music Academy begins. The graduating 99th class is already preparing for the much-anticipated rendition of Starlight, a bittersweet story about the parting of two girls.

It seems like all students in the Actor Training Department have their post-graduation future figured out—except for the cheerful Karen Aijou. Having fulfilled her promise of performing in a play with Hikari Kagura, her ambitious childhood friend, Karen struggles to find her purpose. What lies beyond their promise is a mystery to Karen, as Hikari was the fuel that kept her passion for performing aflame. Now alone, Karen must confront the reality of stage girls and find her way toward the future—her very own stage.

I don’t even know where to begin. If the TV series serves as the foundation, then the movie is where every conflict and emotion reaches its peak. The story takes place as the girls are about to graduate and walk their own paths, and the Revue battles become the stage where they confront their fear of growing up. It’s the moment when the struggles of youth surface: "Should you leave your comfort zone, or cling to the past?"

What I like is how brutally honest the film is. It never says, “Everything will be okay.” Instead, it tells a harsher truth: to keep chasing your dream, ...

Mixed Feelings
Spoiler
While this movie has presentation that goes miles above what the original show offered, and a strong core, its secondary parts fail to cohere into a greater whole. The revues of the secondary cast felt somewhat lacking in necessary context, and treading the same ground covered by the original show. They were excellent visually and musically, but they did not manage to tie themselves into Hikari and Karen's relationship which left them feeling kinda pointless.

The visuals and presentation are the strongest point of the movie. The scenes flitted between sets without any concern for physical reality, everything was allowed to be metaphor. The show ...

This movie has no right.

A movie this overdramatic, has no right to be so boring.
A movie this well animated, has no right to have such poor 3DCG.
A movie with this many insert songs, has no right to have only one memorable song.
A movie that claims to be a sequel, has no right not to push the plot forward in any way.

And yet here we are.
A two hour long excuse to throw a bunch of songs and over the top theatrical performances. Perhaps a commercial for now dead gacha game or the live action musicals that preceded the anime.
And in the end, literally ...
