Horimiya

On the surface, the thought of Kyouko Hori and Izumi Miyamura getting along would be the last thing in people's minds. After all, Hori has a perfect combination of beauty and brains, while Miyamura appears meek and distant to his fellow classmates. However, a fateful meeting between the two lays both of their hidden selves bare. Even though she is popular at school, Hori has little time to socialize with her friends due to housework. On the other hand, Miyamura lives under the noses of his peers, his body bearing secret tattoos and piercings that make him look like a gentle delinquent.

Having opposite personalities yet sharing odd similarities, the two quickly become friends and often spend time together in Hori's home. As they both emerge from their shells, they share with each other a side of themselves concealed from the outside world.

I enjoyed this feel-good anime. It was funny and made me happy.

This is a rather easy watch and I was very happy to see that the characters brought out the best in each other. For me, each conflict is healthily and heartwarmingly handled.

I haven't read the manga. I take it that some arcs are skipped, which is maybe why they came out with season 2 "The Missing Pieces." I am looking forward to watching that.

The anime is clearly a short one (13 episodes). Characters are introduced rather suddenly, but that didn't bother me. I was able to catch on, but I can understand that some ... may find it jarring.

There was one particularly unsettling aspect that only surfaced for an episode or two, around the middle of the season. I think it could have been included in a more healthy way or left out altogether. I won't say what it is, but you can probably guess (if you've seen it), or message me if you are curious.

Mixed Feelings

+Sweet, simple story about relationships of all types
+Most realistic portrayal of teenagers ever seen in anime
+High production values: gorgeous animation, OST, and tight writing
-Extremely poor pacing; side characters distract too much from central characters
-Lacks central conflict to propel strong character transformation

It’s said not to judge a book by its cover. Horimiya is no exception. The series high production values, rich cast of characters, and lack of dramatic cliches make it strong contender in the SOL genre. It’s refreshing to watch lovable characters discover themselves, something we all can relate to. Horimiya also has some of ... the most realistic portrayal of teenage behavior ever seen in an anime.

Yet the lack of conflict presented, deeper character work, and extremely poor pacing make it hard to recommend to the mature viewer. It isn’t shown how our key players change, but told through tedious monologues. We see our leads grow, but how? Why? These gaps are left to the imagination, resulting in an extremely disappointing watch. Its poor pacing also doesn’t do it any favors, spending more than half its run time on the supporting cast.

The viewer may enjoy seeing a simple story about relationships and how high schoolers interact, but for those looking for a rich romance or coming of age tale, Horimiya fails.

As someone who is a great fan of romance anime and has seen a lot of them, this was by far the worst one I’ve ever had the chance to witness. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve heard that the manga is much better, and even though I haven’t read it, I’m inclined to agree, because I can’t imagine anything worse than this.

I’ll keep it simple: the whole anime is rushed, and therefore you have no chance to form any connection with the main characters. It focuses more on the side characters, who, in my opinion, are not very interesting. To me, for someone to say ... that Horimiya is a good anime or, god forbid, the best is absolutely unimaginable.

I understand that some people may not be as experienced with romance anime as I am, but I still expect that if you are not completely clueless and have any real sense for the genre, you will agree with me that this anime is the biggest piece of garbage ever produced.

There are plenty of romance anime far more worth your time, so please read this before watching. I am someone who never judges anything without seeing it first, but I feel it is my duty to WARN you never to lay your eyes upon this wretched piece of trash.
