Suki na Ko ga Megane wo Wasureta

'The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses' is my first stop for my GOATHands Pilgrimage after I'd started liking Studio GoHands thanks to its anime Momentary Lily.


§ Overview

Komura Kaeda has a crush on the girl near his seat, Mie Ai. One day, she asks for assistance as she forgets to bring her glasses. This is the start of this very cute romance.


§ Notes

... 1. Let's talk about the studio and staff.

⚫ GOATHands is a polarising studio. It's either you love it or you hate it. I'm inclined to like it because at least it's trying to be different.

They are known for visuals that overwhelm the senses, as seen in their latest project, Momentary Lily, early in 2025. Now The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses is a 2023 anime. Going through this, I was a bit worried that the GOATHands style might not suit it. Nevertheless, it was far more restrained here. The crazy visuals are only present in the first few minutes. After that, it's more standard. You only know it's made by GOATHands because of the hair physicks.

⚫ The director here is Kudou Susumu, who also directed 1) 'The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today' in that same season, 2) the anime that got me into GOATHands Momentary Lily, and 3) his latest work from another studio, Turkey.

I haven't seen the cat anime. I love Momentary Lily, but I disliked Turkey. So his works can be a mixed bag. I love The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses.

⚫ Yokomine Katsumasa is also listed as a director and joins Kudou-sensei in his two other anime for GOATHands. He is also listed as one of the three storyboarders.

Some don't like how this was presented. But as far as I see it, it's decent and the storyboarding serves the story, such as the aeroplane that appears whenever Komuka-kun experiences an intense stimulation and possibly a hard-on, and how scenes are framed to show the awkwardness of having a first love.

But to be fair, it's not as if they're drawing these from scratch. The source material, after all, is a manga.

⚫ I haven't read the source material by Fujichika Koume, and some who dislike GOATHand's handling prefer the manga. If you don't mind GOATHand's style, it's worth watching, and this anime has done a great job in making me want to read it.


2. Let's talk about other stuff.

⚫ Komura-kun seems to be another beta male, but his being a middle schooler is probably a good excuse. And despite that, he is nice to Mie-san, who gives him the time of the day.

⚫ Its premise may actually be unrealistic, as one may ask, "Who the hell always forgets her glasses every time?" As Aristotle reminds us, "plausible impossibilities are preferable to improbable possibilities."

⚫ This anime is a guilty pleasure as it is so wholesome and so cute. Its story is not really that deep. It's more about how romance can be entertaining without the expected drama that such anime sometimes include.

⚫ Mie-san's seiyuu also voiced Hinageshi in Momentary Lily, and I appreciate her work here, especially with Mie's moe hmm sounds. Her voice here is different compared to her performance as Asahi (Amagami Sisters) and Ayase Momo (Dandadan).

⚫ It's comparable to A Sign of Affection in that both give you that giddy feeling that romance gives and let you forget for a moment that problems in your day-to-day life.


§ Conclusion

It's a decent romance. It may not be one of those more popular romances, but it's decent enough to recommend.


NOTA BENE: A grade of 6 out of 10 means that I find this anime slightly above average, and I enjoyed watching it.

A 6 means a decent score and one notch above average. If you're the kind of viewer who treats anything below a 7 as irredeemable, I'd encourage a broader, more nuanced approach to rating.

My enjoyment spectrum lies from 4 to 10. If I have scored an anime below 4, I actively dislike it.

Suki na Ko ga Megane wo Wasureta is an extremely cute romance anime, with a simple and well-defined proposal, but which doesn't always manage to go beyond the basics. Visually, the work is one of its greatest highlights: the settings are vibrant, colorful and full of movement, which helps to make even the most mundane situations enjoyable to follow.

The protagonists have a sincere chemistry and work well together. Both are kind, communicative and don't rely too much on forced misunderstandings, which makes the romance lighter and more comfortable. This emotional honesty makes the experience welcoming, especially for those looking for something quiet within the genre.

However, ... the story itself is quite simple and progresses slowly. The development of the relationship happens in small steps, often repeating the same dynamic, which can give the feeling of stagnation throughout the episodes. The constant use of the protagonist forgetting her glasses, despite being the central axis of the premise, ends up becoming predictable and tiresome, and could have been explored in a more creative and less recurring way.

In addition, the secondary characters lack depth and serve more as occasional support. The almost non-existent exploration of the protagonists' families also weakens the emotional impact of the narrative, something that is important in school romances.

Overall, it's a sweet, pretty and enjoyable anime, but with a story that's too simple and a slow pace that limits its potential. With no news of a second season, the manga seems to be the best option for those who want to delve deeper

I usually don't write reviews, but this Anime has such awful writing that I feel compelled to.

Starting with the only redeemable point, it is well animated and has beautiful art.

Now the bad points on this Anime, which are ALOT:

The characters and history seem to have been written by a kid.
The main character is a straight-out loser; he has no redeemable points other than *MAYBE* being kind. Some of his traits;
-He's a spineless coward.
-He has white knight syndrome.
... -He cannot speak more than three phrases without stuttering and seems to be surprised all the time since he's always gasping for air.
-He has an inferiority complex and a superiority complex at the same time.

The MC is so pathetic that he cannot even touch the FMC glasses without blushing and thinking of absolutely absurd things, he can't even speak the most simple of things to the FMC, and he never makes ANY logical decision.
*POSSIBLE SPOILER* At a certain moment, he is tasked with a simple mission: cut a VERY small section of the FMC's hair that got stuck on a locker, but this loser of an MC almost fails to do so. He starts to sweat profusely, gets extremely blushed and starts to panic.
BUT, mainly, the MC "says" that he likes the FMC romantically, yet he does not want her to improve and become a better version of herself, he wants her to be a weak maiden that he can *PATHECLY* "rescue", He is so bad that he gets angry/jealous just from having other boys talk to the FMC.

And about the female main character, she is clearly mentally impaired. Other than that, there is no explanation for her forgetfulness towards her glasses when she can't even distinguish a cat from a plastic bag. YET she goes out of home nearly every day without her glasses, and people around her think it is normal. Maybe even worse than that is the fact that, throughout the year, she broke/lost at least 5 pair of glasses, and no one seems to say a thing about it. In one of the early episodes, she says that she can already identify the main character by his voice, even though a few minutes earlier in the episode, she absolutely confused another classmate for the MC.

Just an absolute shitshow of writing of demented characters. Far beyond that typical highschool romance Anime.
