Sugar Apple Fairy Tale Part 2

Despite having accomplished a lifelong dream of hers, Ann Halford faces further challenges ahead. Bridget Paige, the daughter of the Paige Workshop's owner, still possesses the wing of Shall Fen Shall, Ann's former fairy companion. In determination to save Shall from the obsessive Bridget, Ann decides to join the Paige Workshop, hoping at the same time to perhaps reunite with her close friend.

Having been appointed head of the workshop, Ann becomes entrusted with rebuilding it to its former glory. She quickly discovers that the Paige Workshop has a unique focus on tradition and individuality, and recognizes that she will need to learn about her team and completely revamp the workshop in order to succeed. Motivated by her strong desire to rescue Shall and her obligations as a sugar artisan, Ann wholeheartedly dedicates herself to her new position.

After rewatching both seasons, I'm here to recommend the anime. While it's not without its flaws, it's not a "not recommended" anime; in fact, if you're here, it probably means you've seen the first season and already know what to expect. The second season, as always, features excellent and well-crafted animation, as well as slightly better-developed character interaction and a slick plot that continues Anne's work life. The main characters are adorable and have their cute moments together, but there are also plenty of moments of friendship and rivalry. There's no real "villain" in this kind of anime, but if you don't want major drama ... or enemy battles, this anime is perfect for that. Like many others who recommend (and not recommended) the anime, there are some gaps in the plot. It's fairly repetitive at heart, but I personally didn't mind it since I wanted to see the scenes with the candy works which I find fascinating. There are aspects I would have liked to see explored further or developed further but for what it gives it's an enjoyable anime even like this.

Mixed Feelings

Season 1 was sweet, but Season 2 showed me that there's such a thing as too sweet. I came into this anime wanting something more on the lighthearted side and in that regard I came away satisfied. But in the end it felt... flat? The art, music, voice acting and the rest are good but not great. Everything was cheerful, bright, sparkly- which is to be expected in a show about fairies I guess? But as a result I feel like contrast was missing. I'm a sucker for dark-haired, brooding male characters but I feel like Shall Fen Shall had more potential for depth. The ... same goes for the other characters.

Even in the darker moments I rarely felt there were real stakes. It's okay for a show to have the constant vibe of "everything will be fine in the end" but it makes for a much more exciting story to reach that ending via a twisted path rather than a plain, straight road. It's much more interesting to think "Everything will be fine in the end, but at what cost". In short it just felt like things kept happening and getting resolved a little too easily.

Even the pacing of the romance felt odd at times. There was never any real doubt or vulnerability from the two characters. I was completely drawn in every time Shall did anything expressive, and I really hoped it would build up to something more substantial in the end but it didn't.

In conclusion, it was a fun 2 day watch, but that's about it. I'd still recommend it to someone who's looking for something fluffy and low-stakes.

This story is so misogynistic, I had to follow it from the first part which wasn't any better. Anne needs to get her fairy boo back, so she follows him after Bridget gets ownership of him. Bridget is snobby and a complete AH to Anne and everyone. Then the antagonist comes in because Bridget needs to make more conflict. The antagonist kidnaps Anne and Challe and they fight a bit and it ends with him falling off a wall to resolve the problem. Yes, people like Bridget exist, but why the hell does every girl that crosses path with Anne need to have conflict ... with her? None of that bs about how background character #15 being nice to her. First Kathy then Bridget, but oh here comes the fairy King to be the big bad, but he's defeated when his secret lair is found.
