Kusuriya no Hitorigoto 2nd Season

Using her wit and vast knowledge of medicines and poisons alike, Maomao played a pivotal role in solving a series of mysteries and conspiracies that plagued the imperial court. Having recently come to terms with the secrets of her parents, she returns to fulfill her normal duties on behalf of the emperor's highest-ranking consorts. Maomao also works alongside the eunuch Jinshi to better the consorts' many ladies-in-waiting, including helping them learn to read.

However, with the arrival of a merchant caravan comes a new wave of intrigue. A pattern of strange coincidences involving the visitors and their wares unsettles Maomao, driving her to investigate the puzzling circumstances behind the convoy. As dangers from both outside and within threaten the balance between the imperial concubines, Maomao continues to utilize her cunning and medical expertise to keep the women safe from harm.

Season 2 was an absolute banger for me. It starts off relatively slow. There’s a lot of setup, and it takes a while before the bigger story really starts moving. But man is it absolutely worth it!

The usual Apothecary Diaries formula is still here. Each episode has its own smaller mystery while gradually giving you pieces of the larger mystery happening in the background. And when that final arc finally hits, the show gets super serious super quickly. You start getting into some genuinely mature themes which I wasn't expecting. Some of the twists can probably be figured out beforehand, but honestly, that doesn't really ... matter. Seeing how everyone's motivations and incentives fit together is what makes it so good. Once everything starts coming together, it's absolute peak.

I also really liked Maomao's character development this season. Season 1 sometimes made it feel like she could unveil major political dramas in the rear palace without ever really making serious enemies. Season 2 changes that. She feels much more vulnerable, and you actually get to see the consequences and danger that come with constantly involving herself in these investigations.

Really great season. Now I just have to wait for Season 3.

Mixed Feelings

Very goofy but a fun watch nonetheless.

Many of the plot elements come off as contrivances and you often wonder what the target audience is. There is an abundance of adult themes like sexual violence yet I kept wondering if the target audience are actually kids. This season gets very dramatic but there are such comically low stakes for the main cast that things like the finale are difficult to take seriously because you know nothing bad will happen to any of them.

Nonetheless Maomao is still the highlight of the show and kept me watching. Despite reservations folks who liked season 1 will still find ... a lot to enjoy here.

The season deals with heavy subject matter, notably the sexual exploitation of children. This topic is handled ok-ish - goes slightly above the bare minimum of depicting it negatively and writings the antagonist, lot of whom are victims of this behavior, somewhat sympathetically. Also with character reactions align with what would we expected from the era. However, this portrayal appears relatively favorable only within the context of anime standards, where the baseline for handling such topics is exceptionally low. Not to mention, for example Jinshi exhibits highly objectionable and predatory behavior. Maomao's perspective on this behavior is questionable, as she treats it as mere childishness ... rather than a serious issue.

Exposition suffers from shoehorning tangentially related information into single scenes to convey details to the viewer. Setup logic often fails upon scrutiny, though some interactions are genuinely important for future events. Despite the presence of filler material that means information could have been better paced or left unexplained from Maomao's viewpoint, setups are still rushed.

Plot resolutions rely on convenient shortcuts, such as Maomao deducing solutions immediately, particularly in action scenes. Tension is frequently short-lived, resolving within thirty seconds. Furthermore, initial setups and character behaviors required to trigger certain scenarios often lack logical consistency.

The series increasingly abandons its historical grounding by introducing elements and inventions centuries ahead of their time. Future knowledge is utilized as a lazy mechanism to resolve plot points conveniently, detracting from the historical appeal established in the first season.

Overall, the season is evaluated as a massive disappointment, resulting in a decision to skip a potential third season.
