When computers start to look like humans, can love remain the same?

Hideki Motosuwa is a young country boy who is studying hard to get into college. Coming from a poor background, he can barely afford the expenses, let alone the newest fad: Persocoms, personal computers that look exactly like human beings. One evening while walking home, he finds an abandoned Persocom. After taking her home and managing to activate her, she seems to be defective, as she can only say one word, "Chii," which eventually becomes her name. Unlike other Persocoms, however, Chii cannot download information onto her hard drive, so Hideki decides to teach her about the world the old-fashioned way, while studying for his college entrance exams at the same time.

Along with his friends, Hideki tries to unravel the mystery of Chii, who may be a "Chobit," an urban legend about special units that have real human emotions and thoughts, and love toward their owner. But can romance flourish between a Persocom and a human?

I'm probably the only person in this thread who's biased towards the anime. I never read the manga so I can't elaborate on what the anime did wrong. The only reason why I'm giving this a 10/10 is because I grew up with it. I don't know. It's just a very cozy, feel-good anime. It's a retro piece of media that was a product of its time. No matter how many times I rewatch this, I always come back to that same feeling of coming home from school, laying on the couch, and switching the channel to Funimation. The soundtrack is nostalgic, the art style ... is nostalgic, and all the characters are extremely memorable. The last time I watched this was four years ago. But if you asked me point-blank the names of five characters, I can recite them to you by heart without googling it. I didn't notice the fan-service as much when I watched this as a kid. I was too immersed in the characters, the comedy, and the story to notice anything ecchi or lewd about it. To be fair, the fan-service here isn't as intrusive than if you compare it to modern shows like Chainsaw Man or Fire Force. Sure you might see Chi wearing a mini-skirt, or you might see her nude wearing an apron. But with an art style from the early 2000s, it's really not something that'll give you a hard-on. It's just part of the anime's charm, and for seeing Hideki's funny reactions. Chobits is probably the only Slice-of-Life I've watched that has a genuinely good plot, an interesting cast, and a captivating romance narrative - all in one package. It's a story that will stay with you forever.

Mixed Feelings

No spoiler review.

I found myself empathizing with the heroine "Chi" more often thatn I do the actual main male lead, due to some questionable writing decisions by modern standards, as well as the position that Chi was put in for the majority of the time of this show.

However, the empathy and careful buildup of Chi's character is what this show's core is about, and was very well done in my opinion. That being said, the show promptly ruins the purpose of this buildup in the end to introduce a new character who the audience has next to no attachment to in order to serve a ... "greater than normal" finale was not on my bucket list.

In short, it seemed to me a lot of the buildup throughout the show up till its ending was wasted by how they handled the ending. The emphasis was wrong in my opinion and involved quite a bit of questionable relationship complexes despite the core of the show not needing any of this. They could have spent more time humanizing and building up Chi's humanization and personality rather than meddling with whatever concoction they were pulling out from episodes 20 and beyond.

The first 10 episodes had too much sex related teenage angsts that pops up in way too many shows in the same era and in harem animes in general for my liking.

The only reason this show would score above a 5 is how they managed to successfully build up Chi's character from literal 0, despite it not being enough towards the end, I enjoyed the process.

On the one hand, a girl with the level of development and appearance of a child is locked in the hatred of a guy with the rights of a pet

On the other hand, a silly worried country bumpkin who cannot understand that robot is a robot and crashes in a robot with the appearance and habits of a child who lives with the rights of a domestic kitten

And then in general, when you find out that this is not a cute dwarf, but a robot proected to be a child and you get some kind of pdf vibes
