Futari wa Precure

Middle school students Nagisa Misumi and Honoka Yukishiro are the epitome of dissimilarity. Popular with their classmates, Nagisa is the school's energetic star lacrosse player, while Honoka is the soft-spoken "Queen of Intelligence."

As unrelated as they may seem, Nagisa and Honoka live double lives as the "emissaries of light": Cure Black and Cure White of Pretty Cure. With the assistance of two fairies, Mipple and Mepple, the girls fight against the Dotsuku Zone—an evil force that has invaded the Garden of Light. In order to prevent the Dotsuku Zone from taking over the Garden of Rainbows as well, the pair must work together to find seven Prism Stones and restore the Prism Hopish to drive out the vile forces.

With strong foes standing in their way, Nagisa and Honoka learn to work together and harness their newfound powers in order to save the worlds from further ruin.

Futari Wa Precure is a great series with a lot to love, though it is best enjoyed as a casual watch. One's best enjoyment of it can additionally be incredibly reliant upon one's expectations when going into it, as well.

So what should one expect from Futari Wa Precure?


Story:

Futari Wa Precure is primarily an episodic series, which means that the vast majority of the episodes are lighthearted and low-stakes. While the series has regular antagonists, they typically summon a unique monster to battle the heroes in a "monster of the week"-esque formula. Due to the regularity of this routine, the series can become incredibly repetitive, and ... thus: very predictable.


Occasionally, however, the show will switch things up. Despite being an incredibly character-driven show which usually places its plot on furthest-back-back-burner, when the plot DOES find it's way to the forefront it can become rather unpredictable. Not so much so that things feel as though they come from left field, but just enough as to keep the viewer on their toes. The show's surprises are plausible and make sense within the context of the story, but are still surprises nonetheless.


Characters:


The two protagonists of Futari Wa Precure, Nagisa Misumi and Honoka Yukishiro, otherwise known as Cure Black and Cure White respectively, are incredibly endearing, well-written characters, and the true driving force of the show. The writing for their characters is solidly consistent throughout the length of the show, while still allowing them to grow and struggle within their means. Liking these characters is essential to liking the show, as in many ways, they truly <em>are</em> the show.

A common complaint is that between the two of them, Honoka tends to have less focus than her counterpart. While this is undeniably true, as Nagisa ultimately takes on more screentime, the stories which Honoka are given tend to be weightier and more emotional. Whether or not one feels as though this balances things out more, though, is much more subjective.

Whilst on the topic of common complaints, many viewers seem to step away disliking the primary supporting cast, those being the fairies who help Pretty Cure transform. The fairies, whilst being "good guys," will often do things that inconvenience the main girls and even put them at risk from time to time. To get a bit more subjective for a moment, I the reviewer personally feel as though that after a certain point, the problem has to do less with the fairies and more with the way the girls handle them. Nagisa and Honoka may be young teenagers, but when the same issues have been consistently reoccurring with the fairies, one would think that they would learn to act in advance by taking precautions to prevent the problems before they arise again.

With that said, the fairies aren't all bad. They have a decent amount of charming moments in their own right, and they'll help out a bit as well. Most of their mischief clearly stems from a need for a catalyst for the plot of any given episode, and none of the things they do ever have serious lasting repercussions.

The villains are the next and last set of regular, important characters. As there are two different groups of villains, they'll be covered seperately.

The first group of villains is, for the most part, very standard, with their goal being to cover the entire world in darkness. As the show works it's way through the roster, however, things eventually become more interesting. As to avoid spoilers, I won't say more.

The second set of villains is also decently standard, though oftentimes considered to be less impactful than the first. While their goals and conflicts are decently interesting, they do not bring as much to the table as the first group, and have less meaningful interactions with Pretty Cure because of it.


Art:


The artstyle of Futari Wa Precure is cute, charming, and distinct. The main characters are designed appealingly, if not a bit simplistically at times, with rounded shapes and colors that are bright yet not harsh to the eyes, all of which serve to make them appealing. The villains contrast this perfectly by having sharper shapes and a generally duller color palette.

The backgrounds are well-drawn yet very standard, without much to note. They serve their purpose well and never distract from the action on-screen.


Sound:


As far as the original Japanese version goes, the voice actors are perfectly cast and do their job wonderfully, providing the appropriate amount of emotion and the correct cadence for any given scene. It's clear the seiyuus were and are pros at the time of being cast, and there are some moments that are seriously enhanced by their performances.

The Japanese opening and ending themes are also pretty good, being catchy and energetic, overall being quite fun to listen to.



Though I have only seen one episode of it, that being the first episode, I cannot say the same for the English dub. The voices provided for the two main girls are notably flat to the point of nearly being unintentionally comical, and they sound very similar as well. The fairy Mepple, as well as the villain Pisard, fair a bit better, as their voices are much more expressive and suit their characters well.

In a similar vein, the English version of the opening and ending themes aren't that great, either. While the instrumental is nice, the vocals for the opening are dry and sound a bit strained at certain parts, and the ending is just the instrumental from the aforementioned opening.

Both versions of the show use the same OST, which is perfectly suited to the series, though none of the tracks are particularly memorable, except perhaps for the dramatic one which always plays whenever the girls are fighting any given villian, though it's still nothing groundbreaking.


Enjoyment:


Overall, Futari Wa Precure is easy to enjoy. Its simplicity makes it easy to jump into at any given moment, the fight scenes are interesting and well-coordinated, and it's really just fun. It is a fun watch which requires little brainpower (though one should definitely still use some when watching it) and is especially excellent after a long or tiring day. It's a comfort show for sure, and while it has its fair share of flaws, it is well worth watching.

Mixed Feelings

Just finished my first Pretty Cure season!!~ 💕 This show is really funny & heartwarming, it even made me feel nostalgic even though I never watched it when I was younger. The music was incredibly catchy and I never got tired of listening to the intro & outro. I would recommend this to you if you like early 2000’s anime/magical girl shows, or if you like Precure and want to see how the franchise began/start watching from the beginning. I would not recommend it if you are annoyed by repetition or are looking for a deep story or fantastic villains.

The Good!!~
Nagisa & Honoka’s friendship was incredibly genuine and you can feel their bond grow throughout the show. I also loved their relationships with their fairies, Mepple & Mipple~ They grew gradually as well and the real stand-out was with Nagisa & Mepple who have some pretty emotional moments with each other in later episodes. I also loved Wisdom the Stone Keeper and thought the Garden Of Light was designed beautifully. Though the villains weren’t great, I absolutely loved Kiriya for reasons I won’t spoil 💖 The magical items (Mepple & Mipple’s phone case thingies) were gorgeous and I want one incredibly badly 🥺💕 Overall, I prefer the first half storyline to the second.

The Bad…;
Nagisa has a really cute relationship with Fujipi that sadly didn’t go as far as I would’ve liked. Crossing my fingers for Max Heart? 🤞 A big issue I had for this show was the girls powers. I don’t mind the repetitive nature of every episode or that the girls are powerless alone, but I felt that they were lacking in strength for many episodes. They have only one attack (Marble Screw) for the first half of the series and while they get another one later on, I just would’ve preferred their attacks to have more variety 😞 Porun was also a bit irritating despite being adorable, and quickly made me realize I was judging Mepple too harshly~ and lastly, the villains were really weak. Particularly in the second half of the show, I actually dreaded their appearance in every episode.

Futari Wa Pretty Cure A.K.A the curse of the first historical 70's Kamen Riders and Sentais strikes again. Why I am making this comparison, you ask? because this is not a majokko but an animated Kamen Rider and Sentai/Super Sentai show masquerading as a magical girl one, and you don't need anything past the typical super sentai/kamen rider "plotline" (or, better said, lack of plotline) and the coreography fights to see that this thing is a 100% product of those tokusatsus and not of Sailor Moon (on itself, already influenced by the Super Sentais) or Ojamajo Doremi barring some slight elements reminescent of those two ... (hell, even the two protagonists' costumes are very similar to a Kamen Rider one). The problem is, if you've ever had the misfortune to watch the first 70's Kamen Riders (Don't do it, start with Kamen Rider Black if you're interested in the IP) and the first two Sentai shows you know that those (particularly the formers) had a serious problem with a repetition that would make repetitious writers from the 60's era (my second favourite era in the genre, and that should tell you something) of american superhero comics like yours truly Robert Kanigher from DC comics look like Shakespeare by comparison, and that's exactly what happened here. It's interesting and well done until the first 30 episodes, then the typical 70's Kamen Rider repetition of episodes being a carbon-copy of the previous ones starts to drag the show down until the viewer simply gets bored and goes directly to the ending, like it happened with my watching of the show, the first thing I ever watched of this franchise. Repetition that is not excusable due to the typical repetition of the tokusatsu source material and it's all due to the fact that the people making this still had no idea on how to mesh well the majokko part with the Kamen Rider/Super Sentai part, more or less what happened with the first Kamen Riders, Himitsu Sentai Goranger and to, some extent, JAKQ Dengekitai that were awful because those making them had no idea on how to develop them properly. Now, I am a fan of both the Kamen Rider and Super Sentai IPs (I even find the Kamen Rider Girls music to my taste) and there are some of those shows - one of which I'm currently waiting a Bandai Rise Standard Figure to be delivered to me soon - that I consider 100% masterpieces of superhero medias (hell, I prefer the Super Sentais to any american superhero team a là JLA or Avengers and the Kamen Rider itself to Batman) even with me starting to get on those tokusatsus with the possible worst introductions ever to them, so I surely can cut some slack to this franchise and search for a Kamen Rider Black/Spiderman Toku/Battle Fever J amongst the twenty-something years this franchise has been going on. Still, outside the first thirty episodes and the fact that the animation of this beats to crap out of "newer" stuff produced by Toei like the terrible and completely unneeded Hades Chapter continuation of Saint Seiya, I can't really recommend this show on the whole, like I guess I will completely miss the sequel Max Heart because I had enough of the unwatchable Kamen Rider V3 and the mediocre JAKQ Dengekitai (thank you Sailor Moon Cosmos...sorry, I meant Big One for that!) at the start of my toku journey and I don't want to repeat the experience again. At least it's not as atrocious as the 70's Cutie Honey Monster, but that's not saying much TBH.
