| What is your preconceived notion of an "Elitist"? Through a personal anecdote, I've seen that the term often diverges from it's inceptive and libelous purpose, and has seemed to align with a distinctive taste. I find the label to be more of a mentality rather than a preference. My definition: An individual who believes that their taste is unequivocally superior and sacrosanct. "Elitists" also openly look down on others with disparate ratings. |

| I think I agree with your definition of an elitist - a person who thinks their opinion/taste is superior than everyone else's and openly looks down on people with different opinions. I'd like to add that while anyone with any unique taste could be an elitist, most elitists (or at least the loudest ones) tend to have similar tastes. When I think of an elitist the first thing that comes to mind is the people who seem to hate every anime made after 1999 and call every new show trash, moe-filled otaku bait. It seems like this viewpoint seems to attract elitists. |

For me it brings to mind images of someone who's got a narrow set of 'rules' for what something has to be, and looks down on anything outside those rules. If anime's not hand drawn, it doesn't meet their standard of good. If it's not classical music, it's not real music. Modern art's not real art, it's just a bunch of lines! It's someone who thinks the way they view things is the only correct way to view things. You're not an elitist if you think modern art is silly, you're an elitist if you think other people are silly for liking modern art. If you look down on them for it. You're not an elitist if you try to understand the way someone else thinks or feels as equals. At least, that's what I think of when I hear the word elitist. |
