Do you need something to watch for the ongoing November Gainax event? If so, FLCL is a short 6 episode show that you can watch for a good injection of “YOOO WHAT IS HAPPENING AAAAAHHHH”

I’m sure almost everyone has heard about this show, so I’m just going to say all my thoughts from when I watched all 6 episodes last night (but with ~ no spoilers ~). The most obvious thing is the pure manic energy of the show. It’s honestly like combining Kill la Kill and Serial Experiments Lain (I might explain that later) and then somehow condensing all of that into just 6 episodes and putting an awesome soundtrack over it. And when I say Kill la Kill, I really mean that. Just like studio Trigger’s first (real) anime, FLCL feels like there’s almost constantly fight scenes, and the animation in every scene is extremely creative and well-done. It is truly one of the best looking anime that I’ve ever watched.

The actual plot of FLCL probably isn’t something everyone will love the first time they watch it, however. The sheer amount of seemingly disjointed events that happen each episode will throw a lot of people off. However this was something I really liked about the show. One of my favorite directors is Akiyuki Shinbou and that’s mostly just because of the random text flashes and shots of characters’ eyes. FLCL pulled off that same quirky visual direction, but somehow applied that to the plot of the show.

I think the worst thing you can do with this series, though, is go into it thinking it’s going to be a bunch of random bullshit thrown at you constantly. Because even though it is definitely throwing stuff constantly, it definitely isn’t random or bullshit. FLCL boasts strong themes around human relationships, growing up, and probably other things. The characters that actually matter are all fleshed out and are used to explore those themes in interesting ways. Everything in FLCL has some meaning (even if that meaning is that there is no meaning) and the way it succeeds in squeezing everything down into just 6 episodes is very impressive.

I’m not really sure what demographic FLCL is aiming for, but I’m definitely part of that demographic. I ended up really enjoying it due to laughing at its random and quirky xD comedy, getting hyped during its awesomely animated and visually interesting fight scenes, and thinking about the themes behind all the characters, all while being extremely confused. And because of that one of the shows it most reminded me of was probably Serial Experiments Lain (not the comedy or fight scenes part though), but I probably wouldn’t recommend FLCL because of its similarity to SEL. FLCL feels a lot like the spiritual predecessor to Kill la Kill, so if you enjoy a show like Kill la Kill, a show with tons of hype action backed up by creative animation and fleshed out themes, you should watch FLCL, probably, I guess, maybe, I’m not gonna force you, but like, just watch it, it’s good.

Listening back to FLCL's soundtrack always brings a wave of nostalgia. I should probably rewatch it at some point...
Enjoy!
