So far first episode was really nice, I just hope it won't turn into Saki with ridiculous wins every game. More realistic mahjong games would be nice to see
As someone who plays mahjong on a regular basis, this first episode was really enjoyable. The feeling of learning and playing for fun with friends is as accurate as it could be (couldn't help but to think about some friends when Nashiko accidently destroyed the walls or forgot to draw, or stupid remarks while playing).
There's also a lot of references about other mahjong-related media, not sure I got every one of them (mainly Akagi and Mudazumo), but really enjoyable nonetheless. I'd love it if the anime kept going in this direction.
Me, last season: Now, unlike with Saki, we can have a realistic mahjong anime without supernaturals....
Me, after EP01: Aaa~nd we got a talking bird in EP01. Hah~
Well, at least Pon no Michi is decent enough to actually explain how mahjong works (at least I hope the lessons will continue into future EPs).... In Saki all we can have are high schoolers just randomly throwing magic, yokai, and deities powers to cast baiman and yakuman everywhere.
Python is the best programming language ever. FIGHT ME!
This episode was pretty good. I have no idea how Mahjong works but I can probably learn how to play the game as I watch this anime.
I loved the characters in this episode and am looking forward to getting to see more of their cute personalities in the future and see how they develop.
@rassilon Yeah I don’t think that’s real. It says both CrunchyRoll and HIDIVE will get it. HIDIVE only do exclusive contracts for anime now so that only they are allowed to stream it.
Of course they could have not done an exclusive contract, but I don’t think they would do one for Pon no Michi seeing as HIDIVE are trying to save money right now as they are losing money right now.

@Yuri_Niji I missed the HiDive reference, and wondered what was going on with them. This season on HiDive is quite sparse. If they don’t get more, they’re going to lose a lot more customers.

@rassilon Many people are cancelling their subscription due to the lack of app updates on all platforms, and seeing as HIDIVE has stopped their services in most countries, I don’t think they would make a non-exclusive deal for Pon no Michi as that would be a loss of money as people would just rather watch it on CrunchyRoll as it’s the more stable service.

I like cute girls, but I think I need to give a fuck on mahjong in order to enjoy this. I haven't played the game yet, but looks very similar to "okey", which is a game I find very boring. Gotta try the game at some point
I watched episode 1 of Pon no Michi. very basic cute girls. i couldn't even tell much about them. they have different design but they are almost the same. And they told about basic mahjong rules and basically how to get 1 yaku. it's not enough to win. one girl said that she have played Riichi a lot before with her family, but i didn't noticed it. Akagi references were great. it looks nice. 6/10 i'll watch 1 more episode
don't expect this to be big with being mahjong but maybe i'll learn something this time around because i always have no clue back in the day watching saki what the hell was happening lol
girls seem fun to watch disappointed they are still JK it did not appear that way at all from their appearances wanted to see them drinking and smoking in the parlor lol kaiji style but we got a ton of kaiji references shamelessly
This was okay. Pretty cheap looking but it gets points for actually teaching a little bit of mahjong. Way too many Kaiji references though. Really drove that joke into the ground
Bro...I literally have no freaking idea what is happening in this show! It's super cute so I'll probably keep watching, but I could literally turn off the subtitles and have the same level of understanding...lol! Maybe I'll learn to play Mahjong tho
So apparently this is an original anime. not sure why they decided to make a original anime about girls playing mahjong of all things in 2024, but its better than nothing
Hopefully it turns out better, but still curious as an original
(also like guys, its funny because saki zenkoku aired like 10 years ago. i know the semifinals arc ended so if you really wanted a mahjong anime they could totally continue saki anime. maybe.)
The real question is like, is it going to be like 10% mahjong, 50% mahjong, or 90% mahjong
Its a good question as to whether the other viewers have experience with mahjong as well. saki kinda assumes you already know the rules, which can be really confusing for people who dont know the rules. I know I had to rewatch saki after learning the rules and it basically completely changed the experience.
well thats something
anyway it doesnt take too long for us to get going
like how did this even happen? hmm
i do wonder though, since you do see mahjong OCCASIONALLY, like, if you were a random normal person (in japan) would you or would you not know about mahjong?
ok i was expecting this to be normal, but i guess maybe expect the unexpected. a talking...sparrow?
wait so the op is playing now? ook
well yeah good luck understanding the op.
i dunno its not much to say
also i just realized. mahjong is a 4 player game, but there are 5 characters? i suppose there's nothing stopping them from sitting out one at a time, since that gives them 4 players and one spectator
ok this is kinda silly but also kinda hurr
anyway. saki kinda assumes you already know the rules, so it basically throws you into the deep end on ep 1. while here our mc doesnt know anything at all, so presumably they'll have to teach her the entire ruleset. not sure how long it'll take or she'll just timeskip over it and they assume the viewers either already know or are gonna read up on it
or they could just not care too much since its not like they're playing for a competition or anything
though the normal ruleset requires 4 people and they only have 3 now though
i mean the only hard part is explaining the yaku section and scoring
argh im so rusty. but anyway, the scoring system the way it works is you basically have to get certain yaku
while for riichi system you can just keep a closed hand and call riichi, though the way the scoring system works in riichi is the score is exponential, so 1 han is 1000, 2 han is 2k, 3 han is 4k and 4 han is 8k, so its actually more important to score a higher han than a cheap one
its one thing to know the rules, but its another thing to actually play well
oh yeah, they have an automatic table, so the table just sets up the pieces for them nicely
i wonder how much stock footage we'll have or not have
so yeah we get the bird playing. kinda awkward but i guess we'll see when the other girls show up
how many mahjong jokes can they cram into one episode? yes
also uhm. i definitely wasnt expecting a bird to be playing mahjong in jan 2024 but oh well
i dont know super well the history either, so i wonder if they'll talk about it. possibly
i mean considering she just started literally today/this hour, beginners and handling tiles is difficult
there was/is something to be said about how having automatic tables also reduces your own ability to handle the tiles. of course professional players are proabably used to it but still.
so basically every time they draw the girls make a joke? hmm
its really weird but thats comedy for you
expect the unexpected. also nashiko here literally would have had a shosangen if she kept the two chun
imagine if she really gets a suanko and/or honroto on her first hand. although if she didnt fix the whole 13 tiles thing
really though what is going on. i mean its a casual game so i guess they can do anything as long as they all agree to it. whatever that means.
there are some small rule variations here and there but im not actually super sure of their impacts and what not.
but yeah they kinda forgor to actually clean up the place
so yeah literally nashiko had, i believe, four chun and four haku, so she would have been tenpai for a suanko AND a daisangen double yakuman if she didnt mess up her hand or discard the chuns at the start
suanko and daisangen, individually, i dont remember the statistics but they are REASONABLY common, by which i mean if you play every single day you'll probably get a daisangen or suanko maybe once a year. but both at the same time must be pretty uncommon
also nashiko is a name alright, or well the girls. i mean pai is really weird, maybe its a nickname? while izumi is fairly normal i think.
riche sounds really uh. also nashiko just immediately using first name of someone she literally just met?
i actually have no idea how real mahjong parlours look like but hmm
so yeah the girls look pretty big but they're still presumably in high school. curious
riche says she doesnt have free time on weekdays though?
Anyway thats the ep. we're still missing one girl. and uhm. The op/ed is like soso. I wasnt expecting the talking bird thats for sure.
Mahjong wise, they had a little explanation but very basic. maybe they'll go more next ep. they didnt finish their game this time, probably so they can explain scoring next time.
The only issue is they rushed a bit and the girls are kinda like, simple right now.
It looks a little weird, but otherwise.
I mean its possible they'll fix the issues in the other eps
All things considered, I'm fairly optimistic, but maybe im just biased since its cute girls(?) and mahjong. The episodes do need to be a little better though
...nashiko is maeda kaori? damn I didnt recognize her at all, maybe I'm crazy or she just used a totally different voice that I've never heard before. Thats the issue with typecasting, you get so used to voice actors doing certain voices and then suddenly you forget they have range.
Pai is saeki iori, uhm. I have heard her before, but she's definitely not who I would have guessed, she definitely seems like the cutesy one right now.
Izumi is wakayama shion. I've heard of that name before, but I dont think I've actually heard her directly. Ah she's the one who voiced takina. a few others too.
Riche is kondou yui, and uhm. I've seen her name several times before, but never actually heard her before until now. technically she was in idolmaster but uh yeah.
I completely forgor to mention, I'm curious, they look like they are living right on the coastline, its obviously not a big city, they have very strong uh japan dialect.
I'm curious if they'll actually go into the details of explaining the history of mahjong. Like until this day I still dont know the origin of the word ron
(tsumo is quite literally self draw I think)
I'm a bit confused - mostly because I don't know the first thing about (Japanese) Mahjong.
But I do like the characters, the gags and the atmosphere. Let's see where this is going and whether or not I have to put it on-hold and learn Mahjong first.
Okay, it's been 4 days already since EP01 aired.... And I still can't get "Pon Popopon Poponponpon (Pon-Chi!)" out of my head. The song's just too damn catchy....
I mean, the song literally says "Nandemo nai yo, Yaku ni nai yo. Soredemo Ii yo Riichi! Riichi!" (I don't have anything (in hand), not even a Yaku. F*ck it, let's just Riichi! Riichi!) like some idiotic bluffing strat.... I can't stop laughing when hearing that part of the lyric. wwwww
Well, most of them are supposed to be n00bs after all...

Python is the best programming language ever. FIGHT ME!
Well... It seems will be like another K-On one or "cute girls doing cute stuff" (or wtv u wanna call it), but a boring or strange one -- I do even not know how I can describe this anime because it seems would be a patch of strangers things (like that spirit bird and the random references, at least I think the majority were referenced, I noticed that the Kaiji one) with cute girls not being so cute or 'beautiful', their cd seems like a cheap tier one, and the waifu team girls personalities are too wooden, kind they(staff) are trying to try-hard a contrast between them. Ah, the MC is a weirdo-builded-up one too, the fact she likes idols (?) really does not matter it only was used to move the plot... I dunno if I will watch the next epi (probably yeah, because I hate myself), but at least I will learn mahjong ( I guess).
Ok I liked the premise of this show so it’s pretty much CGDCT but it’s Mahjong, I like how last season we had girls building rockets and now we have girls playing Mahjong rocketsπ
honestly enjoyed it more than i expected despite knowing nothing about mahjong, not great or anything but its just anice cute show to watch whilst ur doing something ig
really enjoyed the opening and the girls character designs r cute i mean the mc's is kinda boring but the other girls all have cute character designs
The genres mentioned in this show are comedy, slice of life, and supernatural, but it feels more like boring "Cute Girls Doing Cute Things" (CGDCT) with a plotless narrative. The first episode's directing was subpar, and the character designs were too generic, as expected from an average anime studio like OLM.

OLM has 5 different animation teams, each of them work on different projects. Calling out the entire studio is pretty stupid, when you need to look at the people working in the animation teams.
I mean let's be honest, most people are probably only watching this because it features a group of busty cute girls and are not in the least bit as interested in the mahjong aspect. You can literally make a CGDCT anime about anything. Also, Akagi/Kaiji references because why not? I don't have high expectations, but I imagine it'll just come and go and people will forget about it pretty quickly. We have Saki anyway.
"This is my darkness. Nothing anyone says will console me."
So disappointed this didn't get licensed in the U.S. Hopefully HiDive will eventually pick it up like they do with unlicensed series from time to time (Immoral Guild).
This brought back the trauma of having to play Mahjong in the Yakuza games.
For the first episode, I thought it was alright. The girls look cute, the facial expressions were... expressive alright, Chonbo is interesting, and this looks like it's going to be laid back the entire run.
I'm hoping that the next episodes get better from here.
Bruh that RIche gal had some HUGE HONKERS the oppai was real.
Behold of my awesomeness~
controversial and/or sensitive topics likely devolve into the same repetitive, derogatory, abusive, and harassing comments can no longer be posted.
But my feels.
Huh. So the synopsis as it is right now is "Nashiko Jippensha, a high school girl living in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, was in trouble after being kicked out of her house. She said, "I don't have a place to hang out with my friends..." When Naoko learned that the parlor that her father used to run was now vacant, she decided to rebuild it into a place where everyone could gather."
Sorry but when you say "kicked out of her house" it tends to imply they can't just go back so easily. She was just inconsiderate of the people in her house and was pretty much told not to do all that crap in the house. In the synopsis, it doesn't say WHY she was kicked out. She's pretty much just a brat. She even complained about the boxes in there when she was given a whole place to hang with her friends with nothing that needed to come out of her pocket. She's kinda annoying. Her friends on the other hand are pretty darn supportive and helpful. How nice.
I can't really imagine this anime becoming too interesting. Nice OP though.
Interesting premise, we'll have to wait as the main 5 girls get introduced to see if they go true Mahjong mode or silly ass like this first game for Nashiko
god those meme faces popped out of nowhere but somehow fits Negi's artstyle
That's the most random way to start a mahjong club, I love the references though, Akagi of course but I didn't expect them to be referencing Boshu from Shoubushi Densetsu Tetsuya, that was great
