While I'm clearly not the target audience for this manga, I always look forward to adaptations of works like this, as I love mature and serious SoL beyond moe-filled and idealized stories. Serious works about (relatively) real Japanese life and Japanese people are my weakness. So, do you have any expectations from this or any interesting things about this manga (preferably under the spoiler tag if necessary) that you could tell? Do you think it can be successful and not end up being just another locally known good josei anime?

At this point, I can conclude that the studio has a great track record of adapting interesting and quality stories for female audiences, but I am a little worried that almost all of their anime up to this point have focused on male characters.

I haven't read the manga but looking forward to this. Director and music composer have good track record, so I have slightly high expectations.

The manga is a character writing masterpiece and one of the best recent manga works published, definitely recommend people to check it out. I wonder if the anime could cover all 11 volumes.

Hmmm....

1. Adult MC having a relative passes away leaving a child/teenager
2. Adult MC adopts the child/teenager
3. Demography is josei

Me: (serious Usagi Drop trauma resurfaces....)
Me: (sees the MC is pronounced as a "her")
Me: phew.... thank god....
Me: (proceed to remember that yuri-incest titles does exist)
Me: ( * trembling in fear * )

PS: I'm just joking.... this does seem interesting. Will watch

@uncleqrow Jokes aside, I've seen BL or even straight harem with such a plot, but yuri doesn't seem to be there.

I watched the movie because of Gakki-san tbh and thought it was decent. Hopefully the anime too in due time. Story did seem like it'd fit the live action format better but I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong here.

@uncleqrow Yeah I understand that worry. Always such a shame when a show about a relationship between a parent and child goes a direction absolutely no one likes.

Sometimes I feel like when there’s any “relationship” in anime it always has to be romantic. Like, gimme a break, non romantic relationships are better imo.
I like to watch some anime, I like to talk about some anime, I dislike wars over some anime, but more than anything I love to live my life, anime is an enjoyable and entertaining addition onto my life but it's not my whole life.

Very interested. As you say, looks like a mature slice-of-life. We could use more josei, and the manga seems to be highly-praised.

Have a lot of respect for Shuka, who made Natsume Yuujinchou and Yuzuki Family's Four Sons. Calm vibes. Art looks appealing. Plus, Kensuke Ushio on music and Miyuki Sawashiro as a lead.

Somewhat worried it might get either too uneventful or too melodramatic, but that's goes for any show, really.

@perseii I haven't read the original manga, but from what I've heard, it's a classic josei manga about the experiences of modern Japanese women.

@RobertBobert Don't really have expectations around the fact that it's josei, specifically. The few josei anime I've seen have been great. And I'd like to see more variety in the seasonal line-up.

@perseii I mean, josei in this sense is often dedicated to the experiences of Japanese women. The first josei I ever heard about was dedicated to the experience of a mother raising a wayward teenage daughter.

@RobertBobert None of the josei anime I've seen (and are pretty popular) actually feature an older Japanese woman as the main character... There's a middle-aged dude raising a little girl, a high-school girl playing a card game, two high-school boys playing jazz, etc. Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's what gets adapted.

But yeah, I'm interested in seeing an anime with older Japanese women in it, especially drama. Haven't really seen a lot of those around.

Only Yesterday might be the most straightforward example I can think of. Really liked it. Wave, Listen to Me! and Rilakkuma and Kaoru-san were an okay watch. Can't think of much else.

Workplace romance/comedy kind of works, but the characters are usually pretty young, like fresh out of college.

@perseii A hot mature or relatively young guy raising a little girl is a pretty popular fantasy in Japanese female fiction. I've seen at least 4-5 titles about it at least on the manga level. But yes, overall josei is still quite diverse.

This is one of the paradoxes of Japanese appeal, as for a number of reasons you'll find it much easier to find stories about the female experience in titles aimed at male audiences than in works aimed at female audiences. Primarily because shoujo is often dismissed as "female-only fiction," while CGDCT anime, for example, is considered more financially viable due to its appeal to people regardless of gender.

Phew, for a moment I thought the girl in the skirt was a boy. Is this yuri or just drama?

Edit: I'm really interested in this premise. Could someone be kind enough to be honest and tell me if this work has superficial woke militant messages or if it's a truly decent work in terms of the themes it tackles, such as drama and the relationships between the characters?
