Then a leadup to the actual race next episode!

Aww, little Tamano Cross looked so adorable. ^_^ Too bad she's going to retire soon.

Nice buildup for the race. I can't wait to see the result.

Stakes are super high for the Arima next week. Tamamo's last race, Oguri's last chance to win against her, Dicta's chance to beat Oguri and Creek's opportunity to flex her strength after a long wait.

The most stacked line-up of any race in the show so far. Beyond hyped for next episode!

One of the things I dislike about the Umamusume series is that it creates drama by the narcissistic characters forcing expectations of a rivalry on other people

Absolutely loved this episode, because it felt like the mangaka got some tips from Cygames regarding handling characters and upped their game. We get to see incredible developments: get an Oguri narration and see the perspective from within a "lesser" rival without just words or aura being thrown.

Firstly, here we go, that one kouhai that acts like a mother figure to her senpai, never change Super Creek

We get to see Dicta the dere, and her discovering Oguri Hamster was funny. We also got Komiyama background without it breaching the episode flow. Tama being timid as a kid and growing up grumpy follows the irl horse lore pretty well. Although he was still gentle with kids apparently.

Dicta Striker having temper bursts and kicking walls is not for making this anime edgy, it is LORE ACCURATE.

The tsundere nature of Dicta Striker is a nod to her irl horse counterpart, Soccer Boy. His temper was really something else. He was extremely sensitive and hot-headed, his eyes were particularly scary. His violent bursts of acceleration were equated to bullet shots, something that might have inspired the Zone we see here. At the same time, he had a quiet side when he isn't among other horses or training. During retirement, he even seemed to be having fun with tourists.

Most of his descendants had those scary eyes and temper. Meanwhile Narita Top Road had his father's scary eyes but not the temper!

Those aren't eyes of a sane horsey:

Can't believe we might have 3 episodes of Arima Kinen 1988 goodness. There might be too many flashbacks, or maybe the end of this episode was a flashforward. This Arima Kinen had a story that started even before the gates opened. Hopefully the material does this justice and holds nothing back.

Japan Cup aside, definitely knew Tamamo Cross would announce retirement here following that Symboli scene. Good Dicta Striker-focused episode and her coach looked nice, too. 3 episodes left and I'm intrigued how they will end the 1988 Arima Kinen arc.

Definitely feel and understand the frustration of Oguri after Tamamo Cross told her that she will be stepping back. Also like that parallel between this and Oguri & March "rivalry". Honestly, I am really glad that Oguri lost twice to Cross (giving credit to the writer(s) that Oguri didn't magically get in the zone in their 2nd race), because in my opinion it's great for her long term.

Isn't excessive drama common in the real world of sports?
For example, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg was childhood friend, very close to one another, but them being teammates in Mercedes have severely eroded that camaraderie.

I thought Mommy Creek was exclusive to games but obviously not...

Tama retirement race huh I thought she will be there for next year maybe not game timelines are messed up anyway.
Her backstory with smol Tama and young Komi chan was so cute..
"I may not be the best trainer in Japan but I know Tama best in the world"
Such an outstanding trainer she is🫡

Oguri now feels what March felt back then but she has last chance to beat her rival and she probably ain't going to miss it.

Dicta Striker strongest and and nicest npc uma.

Girl tried to come tough and edgy but she just wanted to help her. Tsundere indeed.

Most prestigious race in JRA to end the season it should be banger..
Unlikely but hoping Creek can win🤞

Lots of drama in this one, but that’s expected since we’re nearing the end of the season and it’s right before one of the biggest races in the business. So Tamamo Cross is dropping out after one last race, I figured it would be something like that, but I’m really wondering why she’s doing it since no one has spilled the beans yet, it definitely has something to do with that old fella from her childhood but the details aren’t clear yet, I’m sure we’ll get a flashback or two during the race so I don’t need to worry I imagine lol. But one thing is certain, and it’s that it’s hitting Oguri Cap hard, the voice acting for her reaction to the news really sold it, rivals are great to have in the Uma Musume world but they can also cause tough situations like this, it’s sad but I’m sure Oguri will come out of it, looks like she already has kinda thanks to Dicta Striker near the end of the episode.

And speaking of Dicta (or should I be saying Striker? I never know how to shorten names lol), I really liked the focus on her, we got her whole story pretty quickly but it didn’t feel that way, it was enough to get across why she’s helping Oguri now and how she entered the zone herself, her version of it was very cool. I didn’t think Oguri would be reaching the zone in a rehearsal race, but she definitely showed that she has the potential to get there and very nearly did, but Dicta blue balled her before she could lol, Oguri’s reaction was funny but it’s for the best that she doesn’t reach it now, it would spoil it before the actual race. And like Dicta’s towering trainer Kouchi said, Dicta is a tsundere 100% lol, but I’m a fan of that personally, it’s a cuter side to her usual self.

And it looks like next week is finally the time, the big race to end the cour and the entire show (as far as we know atm), I’m sure it’ll stretch across multiple episodes but I’m hoping it doesn’t go beyond episode 9, going to 10 would be stretching it too thin imo, but we’ll see what happens. And lastly, I liked that we got to see younger Roppei/Musaka, he was a cool cat back then too, interesting nickname he had tho lol, to me it was both silly and cool at the same time.

Am I wrong or did Oguri have more dialogue than usual? I liked how Tamano took her aside beforehand and also of course how Dictar helped her hin her own way. And not to forget Berno working hard, she's still my favourite character of the show.

Tamamo Cross's decision to retire after the Arima Kinen must've been a blow for Oguri Cap. I can't blame her for her shock and initial unhappiness about this, but it doesn't look like Tamamo is going to budge on her choice that she's made. It's all the more reason for Oguri to try and win against Tamamo on her 3rd attempt, otherwise that opportunity will be gone for good.

That's why I really respect Dicta Striker for helping Oguri out on the training course, trying to give Oguri the push needed to get into that "zone". The short backstory of Dicta's racing career of how she started off well before falling out of form, which ignited her anger and frustration into accessing the zone like a fiery spark, which looks really impressive, as does her psychotic facial expression to boot!

She wasn't the only one working hard to help Oguri, as Belno was doing her part to understand more of Oguri's unconventional running style and adjusting her ways to her research into helping Oguri go faster as well as adapting to the tricky Katayama course and its steep climb towards the end. Going by her own trial runs, it looks like she found a breakthrough, which is a really good thing.

Now we've reached the Arima Kinen itself, where I expect this race to be probably two episodes long, most likely more. Of course, I do want Oguri Cap to win, but she'll have to be at her best and also be able to break into the zone herself if she wants to beat both Tamamo and Dicta. Super Creek shouldn't be ruled out at all, as I do expect her to give the others a very good run for their money.

TAMA NOOOOOOOOOO

dicta's such a kind soul, that was wild though... I'm somehow even more hype then I was for the Japan Cup and I was shaking back then.

By the way, The IRL 2025 Japan Cup this Sunday was utterly insane if you haven't already seen it. official race + eng commentary & full vid w/ aftermath Admire Terra (grey horse) literally flung his jockey off and placed FIRST. It's not even the jockey's (Yuga Kawada's) first time too, He was also riding Silver Sonic (also a grey horse, orfevre's kid) during the infamous 2022 spring tenno sho when he did the same thing but placed 2nd, jumped off the railings and played dead for a good minute. Same jockey also got thrown off by Queen's Walk earlier this year. He also After the '25 Japan Cup too Danon Decile and Masquerade Ball (The favorite) bumped into eachother and both of their jockey's flew off 😭

That's not even the end. The legitimate winner of the race (Admire Terra got Disqualified) Calandagan became the first foreign horse to win the JC after a 20 YEAR DROUGHT. He basically saved it as less and less foreign horses have been attending (none in 2019) since they weren't able to win. He (and 3rd place, Masquerade Ball) beat Almond Eye's record for the Japan Cup AND 2400m turf races worldwide ever period. Extraordinary.

And to top it off the Japanese Army played the ED and OP of THIS COUR OF CINGRAY before the race! link to performance Reality is often stranger than fiction. I don't think they could uma-fy this if they wanted to.

@skittyluv & @mobxmentality - agreed, they're definitely adding a wee bit too much off the court drama in this season - I know many prefer that, but I'm not a big fan of it. Like the earlier seasons where they literally had a race every episode

Not sure if any of you are aware... but these are real racehorses. You know that, right? Top JRA horses typically race 3–5 times per year, in higher-graded races. Oguri raced more in the first cour because she was still in local, where they run more frequently.

There is literally no way to reasonably adapt this manga or their careers if they raced every episode or every other episode. It is an adaptation, not an original. It would be awful IMO if they raced that much, and it would already be close to ending.

Also, the Arima Kinen is in December, and the manga is ending on Christmas. It probably just feels worse since the schedule was intentionally delayed for those.

@zagzee - LOL, of course I'm aware - I've followed the series since the beginning, am familiar with the race schedules, and actually met King Halo IRL at Kyoto a long time ago.

That being said, my issue is actually the added off the court drama - it's the reason I don't care too much for many sports anime, and why I like Uma Musume - they've generally kept that to a minimum until now. I'm not saying everything has to be sweet roses like s1 (sans the Silence Suzuka arc that was modified from his tragic IRL story), but am not a big fan of where they are going.

Hopefully, with the Arima Kinen coming up, and with Oguri finally starting to beat back some of her personal demons, things will start to speed back up.

I see now.. soo that isn't how most people would take your original comment as. It reads more like 'too much drama, needs more race', which wouldn't make any sense to me from a storytelling or realism perspective, and isn't feasible to adapt the source material that way. That's what I was replying to.

If you actually mean your preference is something lighter toned, I can totally understand that.

With that in mind, I highly recommend Road to the Top and Beginning of a New Era. Both are markedly higher production quality than Cingray, and Beginning of a New Era is basically CyPic’s visual magnum opus, it's honestly stunning.

@zagzee - POV of the comment I guess - I see your point, but not completely agreed, but that's just a perception thing. And to clarify, when I mean drama, I just mean off-the-court drama. In game tension is perfectly fine.

As for the shows, I've watched everything in the series except s3 (Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond) - started the first episode and kinda lost interest, so need to get back into it.

Haikyuu, Harukana Receive, & Highspeed Etoile are three other sports anime I like that are generally free of off the court drama and silly cliches. I recommend them if you haven't watched them.

@zagzee So far CinGray has been much more lighter toned than the SJNT movie, which embraces psychological horror.

Also off-track drama existed between the owners and fuelled by media irl. The other guy lost me at Haikyuu, so won't bother replying.

Yeea, I agree. I usually recommend it to anyone who watches Umamusume but hasn’t seen it yet, since it’s only a movie-length runtime. It’s a very moody and colorful movie, and I can see how emotional struggles like stress, pressure, and self-doubt can come off as pretty heavy, but I still think Umamusume as a whole is inspirational. It’s what made me take my art seriously again.

The other person seems to know about keiba, then kind of ignores it, so I dunno lol.

Oguri is getting closer and closer to the "zone," but she still has a ways to go. It's so close now, and I'm dying to see her.

I wasn't expecting that news from Tamamo at all, but oh well, it was bound to happen eventually.

I really liked that they delved deeper into Dicta Stricker's character. As Oguri's rival, she'd been underwhelming.

@LuisSV23 The thing is that you become someone's rival truly when you actually competed right with them.

Dicta Striker is nothing underwhelming, unlike Oguri right now, she actually has G1 wins. Two of them, even.

I think what @LuisSV23 meant by "underwhelming" is because they never competed together, just like you said, not her achievements. Their rivalries, not Dicta herself
