Saw this some time ago, and it was very good! Was surprised when i saw it wasn't in the top 15 OVAs! And you don't have to be a mecha-fan to watch this, it's not THAT much mecha!

The animation is amazing :D

Honestly, I wasn't all that impressed. The animation is indeed awesome, but I was hoping for something a little more in line with the original Macross and/or Macross Plus, so I was kinda disappointed. I think I would've enjoyed it quite a bit more if it didn't carry the Macross name... though it was cool to see some of Roy Fokker.

You have to watch it in HD to see the amazing combat animation. It has one of the best mecha combat animation scene ever.....

The endless debate between fans and haters. At one point, after spending a lot of time on MAL, you just realize it's totally pointless.

Really... I don't understand why so few people have seen it.
It's a must see.

Excellent story, beautiful animation, and a bitter taste of old times when I was a kid...

Here I was going to post something of value, but then I realized this was an older thread that I already posted my thoughts in. Still, I can't resist poking fun at the title. If this thread convinces more than two people to watch the show, should we consider it a failure? If four people watch it, will it have been two many? Mmm, bad puns...

Man that was pretty offensive but that is not the main thing.
The most important thing is that you are wrong!!
Why? For 2 reasons...

The 1st one is that because you don't like this anime doesn't make you right and your opinion means much less to me especially after putting it that way.

2nt, I just found that this OVA is much more popular that i thought when i wrote the first post. If you dont believe me then you are free check other popular sites and see it for yourself.

It seams that ainemelist is the exception this time.

Yeah I loved this ova also. I haven't watched any of the macross series so I wanted to check out the ova's to maybe get some backstory for this season of Macross F. I think I was pretty much captivated from the opening scene onward.

I watched the first 3 episodes years ago but dropped it, because despite the awesome animation the story was the epitome of generic. The island's culture influenced by aliens is nice, but I could tell every single story beat that was heading my way, so I figured what was the point in watching it anymore?

Why is it that whenever directors have awesome animation at their disposal, they nearly ALWAYS play it safe with a shitty script? NEARLY ALWAYS. Final Fantasy: Spirits Within is probably the worst offender off the top of my head. I say 'nearly' though because anything Ghibli and Mamoru Oshii are involved in is excellent.

Anyway, I'm gonna finish this because my completist inner child is telling me to.

with the release of Macross Frontier episode 10, more people will seek out for this series.
in that episode, they are making a film, "Birdman" and you can see some scenes from macross Zero episode one.
such as,

I, myself have just seen this series for the first time after seeing macross F, and i must admit, this is a fantastic show!

I dunno if I'd call it fantastic. The animation was gorgeous, but it disappointed as a Macross project as it lacked the musical element the rest had. :\ F's animation is on par with it, AND has one of the most amazing soundtracks in recent history.

Amazing music and visuals on one hand and mediocre story on the other. I had tough time grading these series but in the end gave it 9/10. But it is almost solely for fun factor and CG. At least it wasn't boring as some recent anime relying heavily on CG, e.g. Aplleseed 2 and Vexille.

I beg to differ. Even though Zero didn't follow the paradigm set by the others, it was still pretty good in its own right. I thought the soundtrack was unique yet refreshing from the pop and rock music the others followed.

As some said, if you try not to watch this with predetermined expectations, it can prove to be quite an OVA.

If you were to watch Frontier, Mao became a doctor and expect of protoculture civilization. She was mentioned countless times in the last few episodes. It's believed that her granddaughter was Sheryl.

Sure Zero doesn't have the most complicated plot but I find some of it's themes such as nature and humans effect on it very true. I also found the love story to be much better than frontier, which would apparently rather have a sing off in a shopping mall than genuine characters. Also, Zero has fantastic music.

Reading the previous comments, was this CGI really that good back then? I mean yeah it tops stuff like Berserk which came out last year, but other than planes, I just couldn't find the CGI attractive or good lucking. But that's not an issue. The issue here is a bad concept, bad character and really predictable plot. Would have been better as a stand alone OVA. This way they only shat on Roy's character and made him into a terrible pilot. Shin was just terrible as a pilot. He'd die in the first battle in SDF how bad he was haha. Even Kakizaki is an Ace compared to him.

I started wathing this but, it didnt feel like Macross at all. I think they could give this ova series another name and no one would notice. Its too low paced, the music doesnt have impact, it feels disjointed and overly serious.
Its a beautiful anime and a emotive story anyway.
