movie just released!

very fun overall, i don't think ive seen kyoani animate this many fights before. i feel like maybe it didn't have as many slice-of-life elements as we're used to from the series, but i really enjoyed watching kobayashi running around with the fairies and being her usual down-to-earth problem-solving self even in desperate situations. cute ending too :)

My sweethearts are back again. :3 <3

Cute and lovely stuff as always.

A third season would be awesome, but I know that's not gonna happen.

Hmmm

It's not available in my country so I need to wait and see what Kyoani have cooked for us. ;)
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

Saw it in Midlands Cinema Nagoya on Thursday morning but skipped the first few mins. I'm glad KyoAni decided to release the first 10 minutes of the movie to make up for that though, lol. Kobayashi-san using up her all magic for Kanna-chan was touching and Tohru-sama sure rocked! Don't think I've seen KyoAni have this much action on a project before, lol. In the end, it took one of Kanna-chan's mischievous habits to seal the deal, that's a nice final touch.

Credits to Elma-san for doing the first surveillance and bringing the focus on the right villain character. Kamui-san and Kanna-chan having their moment in the end was adorable and I'm glad she decided to come back to Kobayashi's eventually. Saikawa's kokoro was probably hurting the most during the course of the film, xD.

Solid movie, overall. Generous 8/10 from here.

“I was so lonely” Absolute cinema. Easy 10. what a beautiful ending and an amazing film. The fact that Kanna had absolutely zero reason to seek out and continue loving her father, but she continued to do so and desired that paternal connection just shows you how strong love is. It’s not a logical thing, doesn’t always make sense, but that’s what makes us human and this film showcased how truly human all my dragon girls have become. Lot of that is thanks to Kobayashi, but she’s also grown a lot thanks to them and the film really does a great job showcasing the growth from both sides!

Thought Azad was generic as a villain, but his revenge plot gave us some of the best moments in the series’ run. I like that Tohru let him go in the end. In many ways, leaving him to wallow in defeat and contemplate his actions is the most devastating way to defeat him. Also couldn’t help but laugh at the fact bro would be the PERFECT Ragna Crimson character.

Speaking of defeating, WAS THAT A FUCKING GENKI DAMA??? Didn’t have Kobayashi using a fucking spirit bomb on my bingo card but that was so awesome. I got chills for most of the last 30 minutes because of all the heartwarming moments and the amazing action. Kanna vs Azad was one of kyoani best action sequences. Ilulu vs Azad was also great and my goats Fafnir and Elma got some shine as well.

That ending was sooo fucking cute, I couldn’t keep my eyes dry when Seikawa came over and Kanna was gone and then the moment she walks in and they hug aghhhh truly the besties of all time. Loved every single minute of this and I hope we get much more dragon maid. Kyoani were at their best here and the seiyuu also brought their A game, elevating a lot of those big scenes! My theater was as packed for this as Mugen castle, my gay dragon girls will truly always be famous.

That was a very cute and heartwarming movie, lots of battle scenes too. As excepted from Kyoani, the animation was beautiful. Dragon Maid is one of my favorites, I've lost count on how many times I've rewatched the series. Seeing it in the theater was amazing, and I hope a season 3 is announced in the future.

It's just.... it's just so peak.

Definitely got a few tears out of me. Breathtaking visuals, as expected -- but an extremely touching story, too. And it couldn't have wrapped up any better way.

I enjoyed my watch... I have to say tho writing a review might be a bit much given the context of the movie. The context being that the show's elements of fluff, lighthearted scenes, filled with slap stick humor that keep the smile going for the average Kobayashi enjoyer. That being said, I had a ton of fun watching this movie, and following this movies main focus, Kanna. I have to say, she was my favorite because danderes are my favorite. But in this movie she was anything but a dandere, she was a spectrum of emotions and my idea of her entire persona had done a 180. She was MORE ADORABLE! How can one creature do something like that? Kanna can. Kanna can make you feel fluff, warm, sad, envious, and charmed, she had me by at cute paws just adoring her.

There is one thing I want to point out that made me kinda suspious is that the movie theaters were only playing it... ONCE that day... what gives? was it like that through out the continent outside of Japan? Or was it just the one I was attending at? yes, THE WHOLE FUCKING CONTINENT in each theater only played this movie played it once in that given day, meaning, Any given theater in this hell of continent had only been playing this HEART WARMING MOVIE ONCE? WHAT GIVES?

I hate that it just reduces to some bullshit excuse as well! Anyway, I enjoyed my watch and anyone that missed it might have to wait an entire day or couple of days before they run the movie again. some wack shit I tell yeah

anyway, in all seriousness of it all, this movie completely relice on your previous knowledge of the show, from the jokes, to call out of characters behaviors, to make you go "oh X, they're always like this". And the movie wont hit as big, due to previous reason and you dont like this show at all, I dont even know why youre still reading this if thats true. BUT yeah, slice-of-life show relying on deadpan, slap stick jokes to sandwich their heartfelt moment and get their message across.

Very sweet, and heartwarming movie. 8/10

This movie was great, but was it just or me or they nerfed Ilulu's boobs?

Also funny how this movie had 0 fanservice considering how controversial the series is.

It's hard to get my thoughts together for an anime without being able to go back and rewatch parts of it, but I'm so glad to have happened to check when this came out the day before the one day it was in theaters! Some random observations and nitpicking, but I did overall enjoy the movie:

  1. I almost thought maybe another studio contributed to this, since much of the art looked so different than usual for the show, and not always for the better. If I had to put my finger on it, it seemed to be trying too hard to look impressive in certain areas, but those hyper-detailed elements coexisted with other elements in the same shot in a distracting way rather than meshing together. Some of the texturing seemed a little lazy, too, like the fields of grass that looked like a single block of color rather than the more nuanced, almost watercolor style of the tv show.
  2. Hard to say for certain after a single viewing, but I missed the playful BGM from the tv episodes. That's fine in principle since this movie had a different tone overall, but I didn't feel like the BGM we got here did as well to compliment the more serious and suspenseful moments, either. I might change my mind on a rewatch paying more attention to this, specifically, though.
  3. It felt like it fell into the usual trap from many movies of tv shows, where despite characters seeming to make ambitious and monumental decisions and changes, the end result is to even further solidify the status quo. Specifically, status quo for Kobayashi is her desire to keep living a normal life despite the overwhelming power of her housemates. She realizes in this movie that she needs to learn some magic so that she isn't so much of a burden for Tohru to protect. By the end of the movie, she's permanently (I guess?) lost her ability to ever use magic again, and she's reverted back to saying she prefers not to mess with the supernatural, herself.
  4. I appreciate the nuanced take this movie had on the importance of parental figures. It's obvious that Kamui isn't in a place where he can provide Kanna with what she needs out of a dad right now, but he's starting to catch a glimpse of what that might entail, at least. Kobayashi isn't her blood relation, but she on the other hand is in a place where she can pick up that slack for the time being.
  5. Looking back, I'm not sure what the point of Tohru's sparing match with Fafnir was. It gave her a confidence boost for besting him for the first time, showing her that she's somehow gotten stronger since coming to live with Kobayashi. Is it just saying the power of love is giving her a stat boost?
  6. I've always enjoyed Kobayashi's resolve up until now, which allowed her to step between terrifying dragons and her friends whenever her convictions were challenged. But it's starting to become such a used trope at this point that I maybe want to see her struggle to make those decisions a bit more. At this point she seems a little too cavalier with her life.
  7. I've always disliked Saikawa's hyper fixation and sexual desire for Kanna, but this movie somehow managed for the fist time to make those interactions funny. I think maybe they knew that joke was so well established already that they were able to just hint at it instead of lingering on it like previous seasons did.
  8. I didn't catch the double Chekov's guns of the voice recorder and the cellphone before they were used as the turning point. Great setup there, especially with reminding us about the cellphone by having Kobayashi frantically try to get her's back from that bird monster after landing from her fall.
  9. It's been pointed out the villain was generic, but I liked how he represented humanity's inability to change our minds, in contrast to the dragons who's gullibility was also shown to be their strength by also allowing them to be convinced by new evidence to change their minds, and thus eventually grow into better people.

Caught the theater-only movie at Anime Festival Asia, and what can I say...KyoAni is to Maid Dragon, as much as Maid Dragon IS to KyoAni as its spoken masterpiece series of the late 2010s and even to this day.

Take note that the movie IS a sequel to the TV anime, so the anime has to be watched before the movie.

The movie's plot of adapting Chapters 65-78 of Volume 7 and 8 of the manga, transforming the mundane lives of Kobayashi and the dragons to facing the fear with the burly man of Kim-un-Kamuy and his strategist Azas to come back for Kanna with her prank signature, but for a duel betwen the hermony and chaos factions by claiming her having the all-important dragon orb. But Kobayashi instinctly knowing that this'll bring trouble to Kanna being dealt a whole lot of criticism against her father, even with the dragons and her fellow colleague Makoto, plus the unexpectedness of her director being understanding with his interactions with Lucoa and Shouta, considering the 200 years that the dragons has had this war incoming. Add to that with Azad basically working as a double spy to disrupt both factions as the true villain, that as Ilulu suspects, but the mage having an edge in terms of his powers that she has had some experience in the past, this fruitless battle is within the dragons of their world, and Kobayashi choosing to enter this battle for Kanna on her own regard, with Tohru having Fafnir to force and mold her back to shape.

Sadly, Kam-un-Kamuy requesting his daughter to go back to him, while not knowing of Azad's villain plot, it just turns a bad situation worse with Kanna having to leave everyone, with Kobayashi and Tohru making the fateful journey across to the dragons' world, where with Azad having full reign of the mana to disperse the duo, sends Tohru to face against the harmony faction. while Kobayashi gets some help from the fairies as payback for Kanna taking care of them. For sure, Kanna also proved her maturity in dealing against Azad knowing that he's trouble incarnate by having the dragon orb to instigate war to fulfill his rather "sad" backstory that all dragons must be decimated, as is Kobayashi trying to call for a ceasefire between the two factions, that the unexpectedness of Kanna's and Azad's conversation being recorded on the former's voice recorder for all to hear, Kanna's orbs truly make and/or break the situation. If not for Fafnir and Elma's intervention for Tohru and Kobayashi to chase the father and daughter head on against the mage, the battle taking quite the turn when the dragon orb is used to control the majority of dragons to heave a bloody finish, the one-shot blow that the latter learned from the book that deals quite the sacrifice of not being able to use magic forever (that honestly, Kobayashi doesn't need one inch of it in the human world) to take Kim-un-Kamuy down.

Azad having to meet his end from Lucoa (who belongs to the Spectator faction) and Tohru is one thing, but it's Kanna coming to terms with her ignorant father that truly show a different side of her, the sentiments that the mage failed to consider as Tohru drains all of his magic to stop him from going berserk ever again. It's a shame that Kanna won't come back to the human world (which absolutely saddens Saikawa)...or should I say, it's more of the visitation that she now considers Kobayashi a part of her family.

fhana's OP and Sachiko Kobayashi's ED, even when it feels simplistic at best, are solid songs.

A solid movie for the most serious arc of the manga yet, though don't hope for a Season 3 fast given KyoAni's commitment to both time and quality should they want to continue Maid Dragon in the future.
