Damn, it's really interesting how tragedies connect the three main cast together - Hinako, Shiori, and Miko. Shiori's past was tough but so was Miko's.

Those sea monster segments were chilling. Shiori also gives a big sister vibe this episode.

Aww, little Hinako. ^_^

More very interesting revelations about Shiori and Hinako's past.

Hinako, Shiori, and Miko makes both tragic and fascinating trio.

Three more episode to go. I bet the remaining ones will be even more entertaining.

Shiori's mingling with humans, satisating her appetite consuming human meat and not for the one young girl who lived just like her on the cove, and the offering of her own flesh to the young kid that ended exactly as Hinako did for immortality. However, it's not in quite the good sense of seeking to kill her, Shiori is quite the laidback mermaid that survived with each audacity in the ocean looking at the evolvement of life and the hate that incurred, until the start of the meeting between her and young Hinako, who never once shuddered looking at a weird yokai like her, even taking care of her like a normal person would. And sure, the temptation for the mermaid to consume her is instant, but the kindness of Hinako's own heart to even converse with Shiori (in her stricken mermaid state), the "fishie" that eventually warmed to her in all of the latter's positivity, and the objective to sully Hinako's life with the offering of her blood as thanks, it was truly a prayer that's actually meant for good when this would be their first and last meeting to both remember and forget, even when life struck her down the next.

It too, altered Shiori's mindset to preserve Hinako, as much as the other yokai tempts her with finding the broke girl, even when the mermaid blood served as both a lifeforce and wayfinder should they meet again, which they did. But for all of Shiori's misforgivings to even betray Hinako, Miko harbours similar feelings that Hinako is still around, though to her own thoughts as well.

The 3 girls, bounded by fate in both small and big ways, truly makes the story shine so much more.

Man, the whole Hinako and Shiori situation is just heartbreak layered on heartbreak. Shiori erasing Hinako’s memories really messed up their balance, and now it’s like she’s carrying all the weight alone. The ocean imagery hit hard. perfect metaphor for someone drowning in emotions they can’t even admit to themselves.

This episode is not bad. I just love facial expression in manga much more.

It's not that strange or bad at all to wish for someone's happiness...but to find that it turned out to be the greatest despair of that beloved person.....very heartbreaking story. Nothing is worse than a mischief of fate.

I guess when one wants less mouths to feed then thats a solution. Still the way that Shiori's bond with that human ended sure was sudden. Lil Hinako was just adorable. The backstory though really was interesting. Going forward they need to convince Hinako that there is still plenty to live for in this world even without her family.

Well, yeah

Pain changes people

Smol Hinako was very cute

But after what happened, she couldnt remain so cute and kind

Here we have a clear mermaid's misunderstanding of human feelings

Because mermaid herself ate humans and didnt think about their feelings or feelings of their families, but only after she find Hinako she start thinking about it, when mermaid herself find someone important to her

So, fox is right: mermaid needs to stop making all the decisions herself and talk to Hinako more

For example, tell Hinako this whole story

But i like that fox and mermaid both love and care about Hinako

But they needs to somehow confess this to Hinako so she feels she is not alone

I chuckled when Miko stated that most of her family ended up as pelts but seriously all of these girls have had a rough past. Regarding Shiori and Hinako, I thought that she was at the scene of the accident but instead the blood mixing happened when Hinako found Shiori by chance while Shiori was still recovering, and before Hinako's accident. Anyways, I think that if Shiori has a similar conversation with Hinako as she did with Miko it should help repair their relationship.

“When I met you that day, you shone brighter than any of it” the way it was love at first sight for Shiori and Hinako became her sun is so beautiful. ๐Ÿฅน Incredible episode, we finally see how Hinako and Shiori first met and it was just as heartfelt as you’d expect.

Baby Hinako not even being afraid of Shiori and treating her like anyone else help she’s too precious. No wonder Shiori became so attached to her. For her entire existence, she was feared as a monster that symbolized death. But to Hinako, she’s just fishie, someone she can talk to and play with. You can tell how lonely Hinako must’ve been all that time too, even though she had her brother and parents, she probably lacked someone her own age to play with.

I think Hinako showing so much love to Shiori back then was so important because Shiori never had parents or siblings. So in a way, the pure unconditional love Hinako showed her as a child was the maternal love she never knew she was missing which made her latch onto Hinako!

AHHH WE FINALLY SEE HOW HINAKO GOT SHIORI’S BLOOD!! So she actually got it before the accident and Shiori wiped her memory so she would live on and keep being the bright star that illuminated her world. “Live on and be happy.” So it was that prayer that saved Hinako in the end ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿฅนthis whole time Hinako’s had TWO Yokai who want nothing more than to see her continue to shine and bring warmth to the world. She is so lucky.

Miko telling Shiori the importance of talking to people is big. She had great intentions giving Hinako her blood, but as we saw with the first child she gave immortality, that’s really not a decision you should make without speaking to someone. A relationship needs to be built on honesty for it to last!! Great episode, can’t wait for the next.

That past of Shiori before meeting Hinako was really touching, and it was Hinako’s kindness toward her that created their bond. Since they’re apart now, it’s obvious that with a proper conversation they’ll end up making peace.

@uselessDM Mermaid flesh is granting immortality (no aging only). Flesh doesn't grant regeneration so the girl is dead-dead. In case of Hinako, she got mermaid blood, she didn't eat meat so she got some regeneration only (scars remain after all) but no immortality. Interesting how that works).

----------------------------------

Anyways, this was a good episode. Disturbing to know how lucky Hinako was that Shiori had no arms during their first meeting + it turns out she devoured numerous children previously. Hinako was cute but 0 survival instincts lol.

Can't wait to see how things will get resolved. Apparently Shiori can cheat and make Hinako forget things like previously, but that's not gonna happen. Shiori can also make Hinako immortal, but right now that'll be the worst curse possible.

Dunno, I don't think it's at least 0.01% possible Hinako's radiant smile can return. You just don't come back from such tragedy. I mean, you can pretend, but it won't be genuine. Right now we're back to 0 where the goal is to prevent Hinako from killing herself one day.

I'd estimate 60-65 years (60 at least). Shiori got blown up towards the end of ww2 and found Hinako close to modern times. Anyways, she was drifting for a loooong time.

Weekly opening appreciation,

Honestly I don't really know were the shows from here after all the lore drops about Shiori, but in terms of what we got this episode it mainly just tied the gaps about Shiori's connection to Hinako. I guess it did also bring up the question about what kinda affects Shiori's blood/flesh has on a human. We saw that it made that girl immortal but in that case Shiori gave her actual flesh instead of just a drop of blood. So I doubt Hinako's suddenly become immortal or anything.

But I do imagine that girl from before is probably dead, I'd assume immortality in this case simply referred to no aging as a pose to being indestructible, but hell I suppose she kinda got her wish in the end. She probably died assuming she took Shiori with her.

Instead the question of why Hina's blood even changed to become more prime and tasty to Yokai is still the real mystery. Perhaps its as simple as the accident changed her blood but it could be something more its all really just a mystery still.

But I mean right now Shiori just needs to drop all the bs and go talk with Hina. But hell I mean without lying idk what she could really say since Hina at this point is too far gone, she just wants someone to kill her basically.

wow this episode was soo good, beautiful visually and in terms of writing, i love this anime man. i also really appreciate how civil Miko is with Shiori despite there being a lot of jokes in the fandom that they hate each other, they really do care to understand each other. anyways poor Shiori, being her must've sucked, ofc now she wants the best for Hinako and feels guilty for saving her when she's now depressed and hates life.

I wonder what became of that starving girl. Even though she might have been from the Edo Era, chances are that she's still around... After all, she's cursed with immortality, meaning that she likely went through the same as the Mermaid, after the explosion...

nice backstory, it's nice to know how they met, but for a family on vacation, it's unlikely the parents will let your little kids take off on their own (unless you sneak out at night), at least that was the case with my family, my parents will never let me out of their sight, but maybe that's just my family lol

also, when you are on a vacation resort, it's unlikely you bring your own food (example: lunch box from mom), you tend to just enjoy the vacation and find whatever you can find around there, then again, maybe just my family lol

@Sigmar-Unberogen I feel like the degree of immortality varies by work, though I can see the general idea initially being that you're granted just eternal life, not immortality in the sense of regeneration, I still need to watch/read Mermaid Saga, that may use the same lore where you don't become a mermaid, you just gain a shadow of their power, which seems like a weaker version of, say, Ajin, where they just regenerate pretty quickly (with certain metaphysical questions of whether they actually die if they don't regenerate from their head)

the meeting of Shiori and Hinako is so sweet. Well, I guess a mermaid can regenerate with everyday japanese snacks? Hinako is the first human who was genuinely nice to her, without expecting anything in return.

it's also shown that conventional weapon can hurt yokai. The suicide bombing by the angry girl disabled Shiori for awhile.

@holdingnothing In Takahashi's Mermaid Series, it varies, it may be very long life with great healing that MAY fade after centuries or it may be ageless life & recovery from horrific wounds. Only ones that keep are beheading & body being reduced to ash ( shades of Highlander.). That is if they aren't poisoned by it in the 1st place or mutated into monsters.

@Sheol01 I remember seeing a video summarizing the plot of a movie where there were people that had immortality akin to Highlanders, though it was a trade off in that seemingly it will just wear off eventually. The Old Guard is the name

Shiori’s backstory played out differently then I thought it would, I mean she technically experienced the worst of humanity with the whole throwing kids into the cove thing but it wasn’t the focus of it, but I like what we got a lot more than what I was thinking. So Shiori screwed up big time twice, both with Hinako and the girl she turned immortal, she did what she thought was best for them but each time it backfired, pretty sad stuff, but no way could Shiori have predicted Hinako’s family would tragically die, so really giving Hinako her blood wasn’t a terrible play, but of course it still turned out terrible.

Also, in the process we also learned just how much Hinako means to Shiori, since she was the first person to ever “let her in”, it definitely adds a lot to their current relationship, it’s just a shame Shiori made Hinako forget all of what happened between them, things might be a bit different now, although I’m not sure if it would be better or not. Back in the present, Miko talked some sense into Shiori, like yeah she should absolutely be telling Hinako all of this instead lol, but they’ve left Hinako alone in a time they shouldn’t have, I was thinking because other youkai could go after her with nothing stopping them, but yeah offing herself is another good reason, hopefully leaving her alone for this bit of time won’t have bad consequences.

And one last thing, I just wanna say this backstory of Shiori’s made me like her a lot more, I never disliked her but I never liked how uncaring she seemed, well now we got the truth that she does care so she grew on me lol.

It's interesting, Shiori says that she has no concept of empathy, seeing humans as little more than meat but I don't think it's entirely true. As she said this episode, she had the opportunity to eat Hinako and yet chose to spare her, long before she formed any sort of emotional attachment to the girl. It says to me that rather than lacking the ability to form connections, she just lacked the opportunity, something which she now has as she's disguising herself in Hinako's World.

And there it is– a mermaid's flesh said to grant immortality. Shiori thought that it would be a good parting gift for that girl, not knowing that immortality is also a curse, and that the girl resented her for it.

It took a while for Shiori to recover and realize how alone she is in the world– until she meets Hinako. A normal person would be freaking out from the sight of that monster alone but Hinako was just different, god what a precious little sunshine.

Now we know Shiori's past, her encounter with Hinako and the whole thing about Shiori's blood. Shiori originally granted her protection so Hinako's radiance will never fade– but then Hinako surviving the accident and losing her family made that radiance completely gone.

As Miko said, they just need to have a proper conversation ("They're beings capable of speech and therefore the ability to understand each other", and surely this Monster is not only using words for the sole purpose of deceiving humans!).

Though the mystery of Hinako's current state is still a mystery?.. what makes her attracting to other yokai?

Absolutely insane plot twist. They are all a family to each other without realizing it, so no wonder Hinako was so happy to see them get along.
We now finally see Shiori's true colours revealed: a cold-hearted creature that could not help but feel and want to keep the warmth of Hinako who saved her.
Hinako really does deserve a good ending after such a roller coaster as she does not realize how caring and nice she can be (a hint from the past) even through her current depression

Shiori's backstory is very sad. She knew a lot of humans are after her meat, so she figured giving that kid a piece of it for free would make a great parting gift, but it had the opposite effect. And now something similar is happening with Hinako. As Miko says, Shiori lacks words, and she makes a lot of assumption to fill in what she doesn't understand.

I hope Hinako isn't having some funny thoughts on her own.

Also, is the Shiori we see with the kid in the past her true form and the creepy skeletal frame we see now is because she hasn't healed completely from the explosion? And are yokai invisible to normal humans or are they just good at hiding themselves?
