It's good. I'm a bit surprised at all the exposition, a slice-of-life show seems like the last place you'd find it. (I mean, it is about instruments and all, so I should've expected it.)

A lot of people are complaining about the main character being indecisive, but personally, I don't really mind. It's not like she's making a complete 180 - she's obviously got conflicting feelings about the band. Besides, feelings come and go, and I think it gives the series a realistic touch.

I think I'm a bit biased when it comes to this show, though with it focusing on brass. Hoping for some more trombone action...

Loving the SoL elements, I'm hoping for a proper reconciliation between Kumiko and Reina next ep.

The art/animation is great, but it still doesn't beat Hyouka for me in that aspect yet.

finally an anime that is tagged "music" that actually has a decent amount of music in it. an actual band/orchestra for once too. getting a good feeling from this show.

Does anyone know what a "dud gold" is? Does it outrank silver? Or was there only one winner that gets to move onto the next tournament (the result banner shows two gold and bunch of silvers).

it was literally explained in the show.

-Man the opening scene at the band competition was actually pretty nostalgic. I've got a really good feeling about this show.
-The OP animation is pretty nice
-I caught the clarinet squeak from the band performance but not anything else Kumiko mentioned
-Speaking of which, Kumiko's name is surprisingly easy to remember for some reason
-After seeing Asuka's fake hand gag I am pretty excited about the rest of this show.
-I dunno, brass doesn't really strike me as a beginner instrument, but that was probably the point of Asuka's comment
-Concert band tuner is a saxophonist, judging from the neck strap
-Oh hey the Kousaka girl's the trumpeter from the OP. I'll probably be paying attention to her the most since I'm also I used to be a trumpeter.
-That eyecatch (or whatever you call those things) was pretty unconventional, but I like it. Probably because it's so simple yet extremely relevant to the show.
-It wasn't until the end of the Shuichi/Kumiko scene that I realized that there were cherry blossom leaves falling
-Also, I've always heard Orpheus in the Underworld referred to as the Can-Can song, never by its actual name
-Kumiko's hair looks pretty weird when it's let down, like the top is flat and the bottom is fluffy
-Kinda weird that Hazuki bought a mouthpiece before buying an instrument
-The "Buzzing 101" flashback was REALLY nostalgic. Also, it turns out Kumiko's sister was a trombonist
-That was a pretty anticlimactic recruitment
-That was a pretty unconventional "Next Time" segment, but I like it
-ED animation was pretty nice as well, and I liked the feel of the song

Show is very KyoAni in the visuals department and the level of detail put into illustrating and animating the instruments is really impressive. Normally I would write it off as "KyoAni doing KyoAni things" but those instruments seem to be pretty important to the narrative. In the content department, everything was pretty nostalgic to me and fairly realistic. I thought this was a pretty fantastic and enjoyable first episode.

I know I'm late to this anime but I had a few thoughts on the first episode and it probably doesn't hurt to share, right? KyoAni is always making so many pretty slices of life. I love that the songs are imperfect, reflecting the skills the characters supposedly have. Kumiko's awkwardness is interesting, the fact that she hesitates to make things right, but at the same time really wanting so. The first episode already pointed out that this anime will approach character development and interpersonal relationships. I also found it curious that kumiko's and kousaka's pinky fingers were tied by a red yarn at the ED. Knowing that KyoAni never goes through with their ships, this probably means that their destiny's are tied. too. This is such a cute concept, and it implies that the story will be more focused on both of them than really the forming of the band and stuff, which contrasts with K-On. I'm happy that it's so, the band is too huge to have everybody getting a decent amount of attention.

Liked the animation but it had too much glossiness everywhere. Still good though. Don't really like or dislike any character so far, but I love Asuka's eyes and the main character's hair styles.
I found something in life, is just that I'm still trying to figure out what is it.

This one has a pretty nice start. I’m instantly pulled in by that KyoAni animation. It’s as beautiful as always.

This show seems to be centering around a girl named Kumiko. She was in a band in middle school. It looks like her school lost the competition. Fellow band mate Reina was pretty upset about it.

Fast forwarding to the first year of high school, Kumiko is questioning whether or not she should join the band. I have to say, it’d probably be a lot of fun with someone like Asuka there. I think she’s already my favorite character lol.

I know it only showed him for a short minute, but I really liked the dude in the glasses. He was kinda cute. And knowledgeable.

In the end, it looks like Kumiko and her new friends are gonna join the band.

I enjoyed this episode a lot more this time than the first time 3 years ago or so haha.

I like how Kumiko blurts out what's on her mind without meaning to a lot.
All the Kumiko noises are really cute too, especially

The senpai's "COME ON, JOIN US" was great too. She seems really fun.

I like Reina's competitiveness, and she's cool af haha.

Childhood friend is the forbidden ship. But he is a childhood friend, so his chances are low to begin with. Plus, Kumiko and Reina are already connected by the a red string in the ED ;D

Great 1st episode!

Op and ED themes seem just about fine but the animation quality and the presentation, as you’d expect from a KyoAni show, is absolutely top-notch! Soundtracks, concert plus the OSTs, are glorious too!

Kumiko seems like an interesting and half-hearted main character, first impression wise. Lol @ her getting disheartened by the rumours of high school on a certain department not favouring her. Opening 2 minutes were an interesting little tidbit too and it’s no wonder that the words of Kousaka are bothering her to this day. Lol @ how she tries to avoid Kousaka though but looks like she’s finally mustered up enough courage to face her? Anyway, Hazuki and Sapphire (‘Midori’) are really fun characters so far and the trio are intriguing to watch so looking forward to more of them! Asuka-senpai, on the other hand, is hilarious and a teaser and my first impression of her is amazing, can’t wait to see more of her! Kumiko’s childhood friend (+neighbour) is in the concert band too so we’re definitely going to see more of him and Kumiko’s sister. I'm guessing, is a secret admirer of her music. A pretty music-addict person there in the temple, I’ve seen him around in posters so I’m assuming he’ll turn out to be the club advisor of this school or a rival school or something of the sort.

I’ve finally begun my KyoAni binge!

An awesome start. Loving the wind ensemble music, also liked the OP and ED. Very smooth and... I'm not sure what the word is, lively? animation, as expected from KyoAni. It just feels like they're alive, something I noticed first in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu.

Been looking forward to watching this one.

The beginning is all too encouraging, the narration gives good reasons to believe that you want to be serious both as a story and as a commitment to giving space to the world of music, not relegating wind instruments as a mere excuse to tell us about a story lazy or not very busy, given that the atmosphere despite some lighter moments seemed very serious to me, with a protagonist not like the usual ones, and with really interesting and very nice co-stars. Excellent drawings, animations and backgrounds, as Studio KyoAni has accustomed us for years now.

It looks pretty good so far. I like the fact that this show is revolving around a fanfare, it might lead to pretty good musical scenes.
I felt invested pretty quickly so it's a good thing, I guess this will be one of those shows I watch to relax a bit (though I totally expect the drama to kick at some point).
However I don't really know what to think of the characters yet. Kumiko is different from the usual heroines of those types of show and I kinda like what I've seen of her for now, however the two others really don't appeal to me. Hazuki is way too loud and "Midori" is way too childish. Now I really hope Kousaka will be more than just the cold raven-hair girl. I've seen this trope so many times I have a really hard time with it now.
But what I hope the most is for the glasses girl to get an important role ! I like her already, she's fun.

Looks like this music band series is going to be a high quality moe production. Must both suck yet sound amazing to be named Sapphire. Curious to see Kumiko change in attitude from being indifferent to winning to actually wanting to reach the nationals like the Kousaka girl (at least I hope thats whats going to happen).

Why is she anxious in meeting Reina again? Did something else happen after her crying and wanting to go to the Nationals when they got the dud gold back in Junior High?

Kumiko's reaction upon seeing Kousaka again was kinda funny lol

For some reason Kumiko never aimed for Nationals back in middle school unlike Kousaka. Also I wanna know what happened between them in the past. The glasses guy seems interesting.

This was a decent start. It was a little boring at some moments but engaging nonetheless.

I'm quite disappointed that a show whose entire premise is brass bands doesn't have a brass band theme song. Oh well, mediocre J-pop it is I guess.

That aside, an intriguing show so far, Kyoto ANimation have outdone themselves again with the visuals, and I won't lie, they are the main reason I love anime.

The cuteness is too much though, if Sapphire gets much more screentime I think I'm going to have a hyper.

I mean visuals being super good was a given, so nothing much to say about that(also thumbs up to the camerawork.. switching over to thick thighs every two minutes), though as for characters, again instead of "expected" bubbly personalities, we've ourselves a someone who's beyond indecisive.. and she's our main girl.

I'm not sure if she joined the band with any honest intentions towards the end, because it felt something along the lines of giving a yes because the said friends were overly assertive, but again this is just the first episode, and I guess there's no need to nitpick this hard lol. So fine.

A nice start all in all, so looking forward.
