Oh yeah, this anime has the home visit episode. Kaya's house is actually normal if you don't consider the ghost and supernatural going around.

The doll this episode was creep as hell though. Same with that monster in the hallway.

Nah that doll just hit so hard for me because I’ve been walking around shinjuku and seeing so many dolls in otaku shops the last few days or so 🤣 I always said they’re weird af.

Extremely unsettling start to the episode, but the ending is even worse. We know how strong Kaya is, so to see her completely terrified at what’s going on with her mom broke my heart. I wonder if the little sibling will actually end up being born and initially being cute and harmless before manifesting its abilities later. Knowing she’s powerless to stop things rn without hurting her mom(I’d imagine) has got to be eating at Kaya! Shes gonna need all the help she can get and luckily Chie sensei is FINALLY realizing the truth of everything with Kaya. Totally NOT pedo guy actually came in clutch for once lol

Was gonna wait to watch this episode, but I decided to just watch it now anyway.

Ho-ly--FUCK!!! That middle part was fucked up!

And of course, the horrors that are Kaya's mother are just completely ignored by the teach. Admittedly that was really funny.

I can't imagine how helpless Kaya feels about that "thing" inside her mom, she can easily kill it if it's not for the fact that it is using her mom as a shield...

@Marinate1016 I have a similar problem, I can't stand dolls either, but honestly I don't mind them at all in a show, in fact not a single horror show has managed to make me scared from dolls. IRL, if it's an animal or cartoony doll it's totally fine, but highly realistic dolls like many antique's found in North America, or like the ones seen in Another always trip me up so much and it feels weird having such a human shaped thing on a shelf almost like it's watching.

My brain logically knows it's a doll, but my senses, specifically the eyesight, messes with the brain logic and that's the really freaky part, antique dolls are my worst nightmare.

@Daviljoe193 I don't think she can even comprehend what's going on given that she can't see any of this like Kaya or Mob can. She literally can't obtain the context needed to understand it.

@Mainnus One the one hand I feel terrible for Kaya, but on the other hand, DAMN intelligent play there for a specter. It's literally immune to Kaya's abilities because it's got the perfect shield and there's nothing that can be done until at least birth happens.

Hmmm.... Idk... This format kinda work for Mieruko-chan.... But somehow doesn't work for Kaya-chan....
Well, granted, the entire 1st season (which adapted some 30-ish chaps CMIIW?) doesn't rly have any major arc (until Zen's intro at least, that is if u do consider it as "major" arc). However, for Kaya, the major arc was introduced very early on instead. So I think unlike with Mieruko-chan, the episodic nature of some chaps being adapted actually harm the anime adaptation ig? Or was it just the case of bad direction? idk....

Edit:
In hindsight, I think my last comment may have materials that can be considered as somekind of spoilers, so I proactively removed the specific parts myself....

More edit:
I never watched/read Dark Gathering, so that's why I never made the comparison between this and the title. I do read & watch Mieru-chan tho, so that's why the comparison.

The doll part felt like a Juuni Ito sketch, with the girls face transforming like she's going down the Made in Abyss lift.

So baby is the curse, surprised Kaya hasn't tried the fetus deletus slap/Judo chop on her yet. Completely understand why Kaya doesn't like babies.

Do like the Crayon Shin-chan like poses Kaya pulls off.

An interesting episode, and I want to note that even small details are not forgotten in the adaptation; the inscription on the apron of kindergarten teacher is still mirrored, The girl from the first story did well. Not only did she not want to harm her family, so she didn't bring the ghost home, but she also pointed out the place where the ghost appeared and where missing and died, due to an accident. I can only sympathize with Kaia's mental state.

This is a case where it doesn't hurt, because it fits very well into the story. In this episode, it is clearly visible when the series is divided into three acts, conditionally speaking, the road home, with references to the events of the following day, the story in the kindergarten with the doll, and then the aforementioned meeting, so the pace of the story is excellent so far, and I say this as a reader..

Nacchi's friends unlocked a trauma.

Many of Kaya faces in this episode were reaction images worthy.

Just sitting here having a casual chat with Cthulhu Mama.

So the final boss is Kaya's baby brother. Very early for that sort of reveal. I have to feel for the girl who found the old man dead in the river and got chased around by his ghost.

@ShiroAlex Well, I'm not talking abt the story... It's adapted from a manga, a good pacing one, obviously the adaptation will be having a good pace as well, as long as the anime didn't f*d up too much.... It's more abt the presentation.

There are several other anime with very episodic nature, each with their own unique way of approaching this:
- put clear separation between each adapted chaps (ex: Nozaki-kun, Tomo-chan, etc.)
- separate each chaps with somekind of a title/card screen (ex: Tanaka-kun, Kaguya-sama, etc.)
- blend the different chaps into one seamless anime episode (ex: Mieruko-chan, Working!!, etc.)

This is understandable, since anime and manga are 2 very different medium, not everything that looked good on manga will translatable perfectly to anime medium (esp. bc anime has strict EP duration, usually 24 mins/EP). But each of the titles above managed to do the transition (or blending) between each adapted chaps well, that it doesn't feel awkward. But Kaya-chan (the anime) seems to failed to do so, such that each adapted chaps seems rly rushed and unable to marinate properly.
Then again, most of the aforementioned titles above are mostly comedy, so maybe it has something to do with the success as well? idk.

Edit:
Oh, I know what the issue is. Disconnection between parts of an EP (due to they're from different chaps). Watching Kaya-chan the anime feels no different from just simply reading an animated manga, instead of a proper anime.

@FarCritical Honestly I thought so too ^^'
Like I assumed that Chie sensei just went "Well, Kaya has the power to see and fight ghosts, guess her mother is just an eldritch entity, best act normal" but yeah, her not seeing anything out of ordinary makes sense. Feels like in the setting normal people are able to perceive ghosts to some extent while they are being actively about to attack but only some people are able to see them in normal circumstances.

Also, man the show could go into really, really dark places from here. Like the entity... Well, hm... I do not see the birth going well in these circumstances, and I absolutely do not imagine Kaya would be allowed to be present for it, and frankly even if she were I don't think she could help...

So far the episodes we had does not lead me to believe the story will go to those places... but I can't just rule it out as something they surely wouldn't do either

In some episodes, this can certainly be felt, but not in this one. The adaptation does its job, and the length of the original source material, or rather the chapters, should also be taken into account, although the question here is, of course, whether it is easier to adapt long chapters or short ones.

This anime is actually creepy as hell, and it's even more disturbing because ghost are always targeting and attacking little children. That scene with the freaking doll? OH HELL NO- And there's always something dark going on the background that not always has a closed ending. We got the window person, who most probably committed suicide, the teacher who's image is still "flipped" so the real one remains caged inside of that mirror, the cursed books that the principal of the kindergarten took who knows where... There's always so much mystery in every episode.

I had a feeling Chie Sensei was gonna go up causally and greet Kaya’s “mom” the moment she was revealed lol, I knew there had to be some reason Kaya’s dad didn’t seem as disturbed as Kaya and now it makes sense, normal people can see Kaya’s mom just fine, but to those that have spiritual power, they can see something quite terrifying. And to make matters worse, it’s not Kaya’s mom that’s possessed, but her unborn child, very dirty play by the ghost since it keeps Kaya from doing anything about it, not to mention that whatever the child ends up being is up in the air right now, could be something inhuman even, a very horrific situation for sure and I have no idea how it can be dealt with, but we just gotta hope the trio of Kaya, Mob and Chie can somehow make something happen at some point.

The the episode had two other spooky bits too, like the first bit with the missing girl and the thing that was chasing her, I thought it was actually good thinking from the little girl to not bring it home with her but this unfortunately made things very tough for her, thankfully she ran into Kaya who dealt with it, and it was revealed to be the spirit of an old man the little girl saw dead in the river, quite the traumatic stuff but I’m glad she got through it and was reunited with her mom. And the other bit was about another little girl, Nacchi, being possessed by this old doll, and while the doll wasn’t that scary looking to me, what it was making Nacchi do was pretty damn disturbing, especially that tooth scene, but once again Kaya saved the day and brought Nacchi back to her senses, and respect to her friends for knowing to get rid of the doll too, but it’s tough for one to be as epic as Kaya lol, I woulda made sure that doll was in more than a few pieces tho.

I thought Chie-Sensei was just going to accept Kaya-Chan’s mother and not freak the fuck out but apparently the specter is 🛡️ its presence so she doesn’t notice.

Even if you set aside paranormal aspects some kid taking a liking to a dirty ugly creepy looking doll and changing their behavior in concerning self harming like ways likening to the doll is creepy enough as is.

Okay that is something I never would have thought of on my own about Kaya's mom. I was expecting she was either dead or possessed but I didnt think it was she was pregnant too.

I liked how Kaya's "I hate babies" line from the first half of the episode was recontextualized in the second half. I'm a little surprised we're seeing Kaya's mother already. I thought that was going to be something they were going to build towards until the season finale but it looks like we're going to get into things much sooner, not that I'm complaining.

Man, they're really adapting the creepy nature of the manga quite well. I don't think it'll be in this season but I can't wait to see the reaction of anime onlys when they learn about Kaya's aunt, grandmother, family, and what happened to her mom for her to become like this.
