Pretty awesome right?

What did you think of Vita? I damn near crapped a brick with that one scene.

So this is pretty sweet. I do not at all envy the people who translate poetry from one language to another.

In fact, the thing I'm translating now has some poetry right at the end, and I am dreading it every time I remember it.

That is pretty cool. I don't envy any sort of complex translation like that or the editing thereof.

What are you translating by the way?

Bah. I was hoping to keep this a secret until I released it, but whatever. I'm translating the Kara no Kyoukai novel. It's one of the best pieces of modern Japanese prose I've read, and in my opinion, Nasu Kinoko's best, most grounded, and most thematically consistent work.

It's criminal that a good English translation doesn't exist (and no, the one on Baka-Tsuki doesn't count), and it's looking like Del Ray won't come out with theirs. So I decided to take matters into my own hands. I'm up to Part 3 now. The poetry I'm talking about appears in the last book. I dread translating it so much that I shit my pants just thinking about it. Even then, the book sneaks in something in poetic structure once in a while, making it a real headscratcher to translate. It's fun, though.

That is really awesome! Keep us updated on the progress, I'd love to check it out when the translation is complete.

As for the poetry parts, just take it easy and go with what works.

Which one? I swear there is like a half dozen scenes in the last 6 eps where Vita is insanely awesome.

And pretty much everyone else, really. I can't say there is many series with such a large cast of characters who all engaged me and I actually really liked, but Nanoha has managed to find a place in that short list (along with the likes of TTGL and Code Geass). It's probably the reason I liked StrikerS so much- it was the culmination of character growth from 3 seasons' worth of stuff, and was supported by enough clever badassery to be able to happily put aside most cliches.

Holy shit. This looks amazing. The combination of Hiroe Rei illustrating stuff from Nasu Kinoko is the last thing I expected to find (well, apart from that one Paradox Spiral movie poster that Hiroe Rei did). Thanks for the link!

Anytime, buddies.

And I hadn't really thought through before how hard it must be to translate poetry from one language to another, especially when the grammar and even inherent symbolism of the characters in the one written language is vastly different from the other.

Now my head feels funny. Oh man and I guess I'm going to be proofing that eventually... I'll study up on English poetic rules in preparation.

Got my DVDs from that Amazon sale (the one good thing to come out of that last anime thread).

My haul was Last Exile, 12 Kingdoms, GitS SAC and 2nd Gig, and Macross+ to replace my old VHS tapes. Yay.

But, I'm watching Last Exile and noticed that the image is "jerky" whenever the screen tilts or pans. Is this some artifact of the player I'm using or is this a known issue with the animation in this series?

Ok. I'm currently doing anime konvention stuff (http://www.kawaii-kon.org) and Hideo Ishikawa sounded like Wakimoto, so I thought it mgiht have been that guy. Ok not a lot, but he had a little bit of a deep voice. He was Itachi in Naruto, Ukitake in bleach, and auron in FFX.

There was also the Tidus from FFX and Ichigo from bleach voice there too.
