@Marinate1016 As someone who likes the manga, I genuinely wonder who was hyping this up to you cause witch watch has generally been not well received in the west and barely anyone reads it on mangaplus. It definitely goes places you dont expect and has some real strengths both comedy and drama wise that I'd love to see get more recognition through this anime cause I find it very underrated but definitely let your expectations down.

Like I think its undeserved but the manga has a sub 7 score here with absolutly no activity on the forum for it, and on the official free release website it typically is in the bottom 3 least viewed of the non immediately axed series. This is by no counts a series that carries any hype going into it and I'd be shocked if theres much traction gained from the anime even in japan.
@JizzyHitler
This is true but also really weird. One would have expected Shinohara to develop a bigger fanbase after 2 critically successful anime.

@AgravityBoy
I do think the Witch Watch manga score will go up, but the most popular manga tend to have high scores even before they're adapted. I remember nonstop circlejerking back when both of Aka Akasaka's manga were made into anime.

Liked the character designs, definitely wasn't expecting it to be this funny right off the bat.

Wasn't impressed with her ruining his favorite precious mug, but ... now we all know magic has a price.

OP and ED were great too, this will be one of those I can't wait to watch weekly (vs. binging after the season ends.)

I'm so happy to see another manga of Shinohara-sensei getting anime adaptation (after SKET Dance and Kanata no Astra).
The dynamic between Nico and Moi is so cute.
Oh, and I just realized we'll be getting 26 episodes. That's awesome!

potential banger it seems like, I had to look up who Nico’s voice actress was since I really liked her voice to find out she’s kinda a beginner so that’s dope always nice to hear new voices

also the opening is top tier

I already had a feeling I'd like this anime, but now it seems like I'm going to love it! The first episode was so fun. One of my favorite tropes is when the characters are childhood friends. There's something about the chemistry that I love, and boy are Morihito and Nico giving it. As individuals, they are already likable. Together, they highlight what makes the other so likable and it turns them lovable in return. It makes their dynamic very enjoyable and the chemistry believable.

Honestly, I could ramble for an entire page about what I found so likable about the first episode, but I want to highlight that besides the writing, I enjoy the animation and the voice acting a lot. I almost regret having started it this soon because now I'll be stuck longing for a new episode every week🫠

Considering how wildly popular this series was on Shounen Jump in Japan I was not surprised in the slightest when this finally got an anime adaptation. However as someone who’s watched a ton of anime being adapted from manga, lns and what-not personally I don’t find Nico and Moi’s seiyuus to fit their characters as I would imagine them to be in their manga. Don’t get me wrong I think their seiyuus are very talented but for some reason they don’t sound right to me at least, but maybe I’ll get used to it over time like how Eren’s seiyuu wasn’t exactly the most popular when he first started out in Shingeki no Kyojin, haha!

Interesting so far.
I hope they find a balance between dumb silliness and fun. Only half of jokes landed for me. It was fun but also felt like it tried too hard and stuffed too many jokes in one episode.

Gonna keep my expectations low for this, as the manga ranks #9368 on MAL, and that's with over 5,000 people rating it. And the current rating of the anime (7.52) is far too high compared to the manga's rating (6.99). If the manga was actually good, then it would've had a higher rating. Hoping the rating of the anime becomes lower tbh because fuck this shit.

Less than 10 minutes in, and I'm already finding the girl annoying. Don't know which I find more overrated: Yaiba (2025) or this.

EDIT: No longer in the Top 2000. Good. Usually it's the manga that has the higher rating than the anime (assuming the manga is not a 4-koma), so it's odd when the anime adaptation has the higher rating, unless only the early parts of the manga are good, and goes downhill afterwards.

Sacrificing the mug to fix the door was kind of funny, and then they followed that up with sacrificing hair to fix the wall. Making a person "light" was also unexpected and pretty funny.

Nico immediately crushing on Moi would've normally made me roll my eyes, but she's just so goofy and likable and made it work.

Had more fun than expected. Hope they can keep it up for 26 episodes.

@Lucifrost You can probably argue a lot of that has to do with how anime has been so heavily marketed in the west in the 2020's towards meathead shounen. Cause you look at jump's releases and how they are viewed in the west and things get kind of inversed, like Blue box has been one of the most undisputed kings of the magazine but even after the anime really has a fraction of the following as their action stuff. WW and akane banashi fall into that too though I'll also admit witch watch is SUPER inconsistent so that probably plays a big part too. I binged all of it as it got into its 2nd part and there were so many dud chapters that i dont think much of going through it when i can get to the next good one but imagining it weekly kind of screams pace breaker.

One of the things I love about Shinohara-Sensei's works is his deadpan humor and how he uses it to create an effect of surprise in the viewers/readers, and I think this episode nailed that, especially with how unexpressive the male MC can be which synergizes well with the energetic Nico. Girl is totally heads over heel for him, which gives way to a lot of funny scenarios as well. I've only read one manga from Shinohara-Sensei (Astra Lost in Space) but have watched most of his anime adaptations so far (I might be missing some specials or movies for SKET Dance but otherwise I've seen it all), and from the super catchy OP, I think the energy of his previous series with a hint of mystery in the air is back, and I'm all for it! This and Summer Pockets were my most anticipated releases this season, as well as my guaranteed definite AOTS and maybe even AOTY, and I'm so glad both will be 2 full course adaptations so I can enjoy them next season as well!<3 X'39

A solid and funny first episode. And the Shinohara Kenta's signature comedy move, tsukkomi in every single line.

One of my most anticipated adaptations this season! Here's hoping quality stays consistent through all 26 episodes.

Nico and Morihito! What a strange duo, honestly, an oni and a witch, LOL. That’s not something you see every day, right?

The anime was fun and full of variety, I didn’t feel bored at all! There were so many cute frames! I even enjoyed the jokes, the simplicity of the story, and the laid-back narration. I really liked the art style and the goofy moments throughout the episode. I have a feeling we’re going to spend the next 6 months enjoying this wholesome anime!

what a fantastic first episode, love clusy girls like Nico, she is so cute and beautiful. The chemistry between the main characters is amazing too, the way she calls him Moi is adorable, that heart at the end was peak, she is so in love! This could be my seasonal favorite this time and the best part it's 36 episodes! so excited for next one.

one of my favorite ongoing series in WSJ finally gets an anime and it's actually a pretty good adaptation this time. the goat megumi ishitani on the opening as well. i still prefer the manga art but at least this is far from bad. from the two series i've seen from sorachi's assistant, this one is easily the better one.

Idk why so many people here loved the first episode as it really came off as bland and uninspired. Like while I think there is some room to grow with Nico so that she isn’t a 1 dimensional “klutz in love with the protagonist” character, I did not get any sort of that interesting stuff here. And on the terms of a comedy anime, it fell pretty flat for me as it was very generic, absurdist kind of humor (and brings in a lot of tropes to do it).

The one thing I will say though is the intro is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Really really awesome visuals with YOASOBI killing it as per usual, watching it first really set high expectations for this series for me that has now been kinda soiled. Gonna give it another episode, but not any more than that at this rate.

Oh yeah baby we are so in! I love the "dicking around with magic going haywire" vibe of Witch Watch. They adapted it very well into the anime with good timing of jokes. It seems like the wordy jokes like the "light" spell or whatever didn't translate over as well but I don't blame them. The wordiness of the explanation wouldn't have fit and would've ruined the flow and timing. Most of the jokes translated well though into the anime here.

This episode was a bit hit-miss for me. Given that the author for this wrote one of my favorite comedy manga of all time in SKET Dance, seeing a series more comedy-oriented from him than Kanata no Astra was something I was all in for. This episode looks good but the content was a mix of good moments but awkward ones too. The characters didn't quite give me the charming first impressions that the SKET Dance trio gave me from that show's first episode. Hopefully it's just trying to get its groove, since a lot of my favorite comedy series do take time to get into the great stuff. Morihito's face reminds me so much of Switch's in SKET Dance without the glasses.
