It's absurd how much more naunced and interesting Higurama's backstory is to the rest of Jujutsu Kaisen, especially when it is adapted so brilliantly by MAPPA's A-team. The fact that Gege Akutami can write characters and narratives with this much nuance and subtext but instead triples-down on the more standard shounen tropes never fails to dissapoint me. Although, what else do you expect from a series literally titled 'Sorcery Fight'.

Critcism of the source material aside, that backstory was better than it was in the manga and expanded upon in all the right ways. I was especially impressed by the OST usage, which is proving to be one of the most underrated aspects of this adaptation. 5/5

This was probably the episode where I realised how much weaker this series will be without Shōta Goshozono, if the rumours/leaks are to be believed. Despite my problems with JJK's overall narrative and writing, it's many idiosyncrasies are enhanced tenfold when paired with an equally idiosyncratic (and talented) director. It was a miracle that MAPPA found a more fitting director for JJK after Sunghoo Park left, especially this far into the series lifespan where it's identity, brand and level of quality has been more or less established. No hate toward whoever takes charge of the series going forward, but I'm not sure they'll be able to surpass one of the most visually stunning shounen adaptations ever.
@HorsePersonMan this episode was storyboarded and directed by the assistant director for jjk s3 ,but also because gosoo is the series director it will has his fingerprints

It was just so amazing to see how well the episode was animated. It was also really good to see Higuruma and how well his story was narrated, I don't have words ..... it was just epic

This show has become art; the directing for season 3 has been rather impeccable. No need to even have any action- just give me more of this.

Ah finally the GOAT is here, that's how you introduce a character. This episode was directed very well and the animation was like cherry on top.
Idk how long I've been waiting for this scene to get animated.

JJK episode 8 starts in a way that makes you think you clicked on the wrong anime. Plot structured courtroom drama about a failing lawyer who loses faith in the system. It feels slower and different from previous episodes until...Curse pops up to remind you are watching JJK after all. The second half follows up on the current storyline, where we find out Megumi was the one lured into a trap, while Itadori was led to the right location. Doesn't make things much better because the sorcerer Yuuji & Megumi went to find is the same lawyer who now prefers cursed, deadly methods of serving justice. Also, the ending implies a catastrophe planned by evil old conservatives. Not the best episode ever, but an intense, colorful ending teases an epic anime battle next week.

I'm willing to bet it's rotoscoping, hard to dispute the character drawings otherwise. especially that bully scene. or else we just deny 100M is not rotoscoped and animators can also animate like that without video reference
@Plopop I haven't watched the ep yet but kouki is known for his extremely life like animation including stark coat scene in frieren s1 and makima Introduction walking cut in csm ep 1

Sound composion of the last minutes were incredibly hyping, higuruma and yuji's showdown will be very pleasing to watch for sure. I hope Megumi would take care of the girl that fooled him.

higuruma has always been very meh, so i was not expect him to get a goated VA like sugita. this is another example of the production hooking me when gege failed to with this arc.

After Episode 2, it went downhill but this episode was (for once this season) pretty solid.
And all it took is for Gosso to not be around.

Hyped for part 2 & parts of the part 1 without Gosso.

For a non-action episode, this one was really well animated and had that cinema feeling to it with the resolution style. Higuruma is a rather interesting character, especially knowing his backstory as a defence lawyer. The way to awakened to his powers in one of the trials was disturbing, but well done, too.

I'm not surprised that Itadori was the one to find him, meaning that Megumi got tricked and ended up meeting a rather eccentric man wearing something equally eccentric. Hopefully we'll get to see more of him soon, but for now, the upcoming fight between Itadori and Higuruma in his court style domain expansion should make for a thrilling experience. =)

After a bunch of eps I wasn't excited by, this one was WAY better. The visuals when Higaruma was walking? Beaut. That iconic panel was animated perfectly. The sound was amazing. And his back story was really well done.

Sad it ended where it did, but not much you can do about that besides have it be a double length.

Actually excited for next week now, which is a first this season.

Holy crap that was insane!
I really felt the tension and dread. Sugita-san really sold it! No surprise there!

Also the animation and cinematography is crazyyy, many movie’s don’t look this good.

Am I wrong in feeling that MAPPA is pushing the industry standards?

That was CINEMA !

The flashbacks really are a mini cinema. The Directors efforts to make each frames stand out is unbelievable.

Itadori was already kicking ass in middle school. Higuruma is a honest lawyer gone mad and it was the just the perfect time for his cursed energy to awaken during the culling game to judge people. That domain expansion was so cool. Can't wait to see how Megumi's side of battle turns out as well.

"Domain Expansion." Holy cow.

As an anime-only, Culling Games has felt like an opportunity for Gege – as well as Gosso – to experiment with unconventional, eclectic, but nonetheless very awesome ideas. This episode is an example. I was not expecting Higuruma's backstory to hook me this much; I was certainly not expecting a full on exposé of the Japanese legal system in my magic punch-and-kick battle shōnen anime. What's more, I rewatched this episode a bit and realized how intentional the anime was with a ton of shots. Very cool.

It is very interesting how the direction of the anime draws parallels between the two plotlines.

Yuji's plotline explores the modern issue of how individuals are trapped in their society, more specifically by Japan's conformist shame culture that ostracizes undesirables and non-conformers. Higuruma was stuck in a broken justice system belonging to a society that, instead of proving the innocence of the innocent, prioritizes distancing itself from and sacrificing potential criminals to maintain a facade of harmony. Amai acted as a bystander to bullying due to peer pressure, discarding his own conscience to remain popular. This is one major theme of JJK: morally corrupt systems that perpetuate themselves through pressure.

Megumi's plotline explores the not-as-modern issue of how individuals are trapped by dynamics arising from differences in strength, more specifically in the Culling Games, which is all about might makes right. Reggie is strong and gets to be served. Remi is weak, so she must serve powerful sorcerers to stay alive. A stare from Megumi was enough to shut her up. This is another major theme of JJK: roles that result from power, or lack thereof.

Both issues relate to systems that determine hierarchies, depending on social standing and strength respectively. The latter issue only has a place in a battle royale to the death, or in the brutal past from which reincarnated sorcerers come from. However, the former issue is very much present in our rather civilized modern society; I think Gege and Gosso are saying that systems based on social standing are just as immoral and barbaric as "might makes right." Both systems self-perpetuate regardless of morality: the very people who shame and kill are the people who get to make decisions.

In case you could not tell, Gege is staunchly a leftist.

Also, here are some shots I really liked for what they represent, which I found on my rewatch.

The red chairs call back to the blood splatters of dead players, and the black sign stand in the middle represents Higuruma. It's a nice bit of foreshadowing to how Higuruma killed a lot of people – both at the court and in the Culling Games.

The elevator is framed in such a way to resemble a guillotine, foreshadowing Higuruma's domain expansion!

@Ki11grave ahhhh! i thought that was the norm for DE and Sukuna... :O thanks for that clarification. :)

boring episode, I didn't pay attention coz it's so boring but can someone tell me why the kid made that glare on the Higuruma, he got him cleared right? very ungrateful pos

Well no wonder you were bored, since you apparently didn’t watch the episode. Higuruma’s entire backstory leads up to that exact moment when his technique manifests, in the guy’s retrial. He verbatim says that there is no way the guy won’t get convicted in a second trial. It’s the crux of his character development.

If you don’t want to be bored, hop off TikTok and pay attention.

I was losing the plot for a minute there. The story telling structure is not the most fluid or straightforward in JJK. So the short story at the start had me a bit confused. But we have a new challenger. Idk. The previous few episodes were good, but not as much action. I think the story telling is too convoluted for my liking, and I wish this was a little less serious and dramatic, because those are honestly the moments when it shines. A hen the over the top action is taking center stage. I get they want to stick close to the manga, but I wish it would tighten up the storytelling a bit.

This ep was insane, i dont remember the last time i fell in love with a character so quickly. Like 4 minutes in and i adore Higuruma. I deadass would watch an anime that's just about higuruma's life as a lawyer going through all this.

I just love his motivations and character, bro rlly was trying to get his client's name cleared just for the corrupt court to overrule the innocent verdict with NO new evidence (insane if u ask me). When he said "why are you looking at me like that" CHIIIIIIILLLLLLLS

I also love how how he just repeatedly whacks that hammer of his lmao he's just so expressive you can tell he really has some screws loose, and a domain expansion the minute he's fighting?! cant wait for next ep

Awesome episode, not much happened other than talking, but it was pretty awesome, and I could feel the tension in it, so it was a well-directed episode.

And I like the design of Higuruma. I hope he's on the good side, and I'm hyped for the upcoming episodes. Too bad this season will end in 4 more episodes.
