I was expecting that the sword itself turns out to be a demon, which is why it got away so often. I am a little disappointed they didn't go that direction.

The Hero of the South had a tale of bravery...

I enjoyed the story of the Hero of the South, someone charging into battle knowing he would die from it. For a hero as strong as him, I'm surprised this is the first time we have heard of him. Nice to know he forecasted Himmel changing Frieren's life. Otherwise, I thought this was a bit of a dry episode, with another odd job for little scraps of rewards. That said, we can always count on this series to have episodes that fly by, even when it isn't at its peak. Hopefully, we'll get more flashbacks including the Hero of the South at some point.

I didn't even think about it, but that's certainly interesting xD

as this the first time we've seen them actually fight as a party of three? Pretty sure it's all been separate 1v1s

If it's not the first time, it's something quite unsual, so another great thing about this episode was seeing the 3 of them fight together! I hope that happens more often in the future!

But it's quite interesting how differently demons are portrayed in both anime.

Didn't think the hero of the south would leave such a strong impression on me lmao, I had the same reaction as Stark when i saw his statue and didn't realise he'd been mentioned way back in early s1.
I hope this isn't the last we see of the hero of the south.

lol! :D that truly is a useless spell! the one for scratching your back would be cool, especially if the itch is in a spot you can't reach... or you've gotten your arm(s) injured and you're laid up in bed recuperating. but the fruit change spell? unless it REALLY turns one into another different one... not just changes their colors... it is useless! hah! :D

i am curious WHY that sword is so cool that demons keep trying to steal it! who owned it that demons want to emulate so badly?

the Southern Hero was a seriously :O HOLY CRAP! :O lore-drop! it entirely changes how Frieren and Himmel first met! :O plus, it gave us more info on how many of those Demon Generals are out-n-about still. i wonder if any concerted efforts are being made to hunt em down n off em?

I really liked that lore about the Hero of the South, he ended up being another pretty cool character even with the limited screentime he had. The sword demon fight was good too, another all around great episode. 💯

Another magnificent episode, as always. It just flew by, I was like “Was that it?” It was just so good. Even though I’ve just read the manga a month ago, I couldn’t remember this episode at all lmao. Respects for The Hero of the South, he was so cool. I really liked that play with those puppets. Frieren knew something was off since the very beginning she entered that city lol, even though she was faster she couldn’t escape from her fate haha. I gotta say it, the scene of that perfectly breedable childbearing demoness hips and abdomen was so surprising, I had to triple check it because I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing lol. Nice reward, I’d love to turn red apples into green ones.

That was unmistakably the sort of grimoire authored by a pâtisserie witch, intended for the dire hour when one craves a green apple tart and one’s hopeless apprentice returns instead with Red Deliciouses. A tragedy, meticulously documented in ink and spite.

@ArcticRaccoon This is the BEST COMMENT I've read all week, you are a true Master! I bow before your awesome skill! ( No, I'm not mocking you, I am actually being sincere for a change. LOL).

The quiet pacing, emotional restraint, and beautiful atmosphere are still its biggest strengths. Small character moments say so much without needing dramatic dialogue, and the themes of time, memory, and growth hit just as deeply as ever. The animation and music remain subtle but powerful, perfectly matching the reflective tone of the story.

That said, the episode does feel a bit too slow at times. Some scenes linger longer than necessary, which slightly weakens the tension and momentum. A bit more narrative push or variety in pacing could help keep viewers fully engaged, especially early in the season. Still, these are minor issues in an episode that clearly understands its identity.

THE GOAT HOTS IS HERE!!!! He deserves a statue in every town with Himmel's party.

Himmel is him and was the one to take down the demon king but the strongest is definitely the HOTS. Dude 1v8 great demons (7 sages + Schlacht) and killed 3 of them + Schlacht.

Dude is human but he's a boss battle for Great demons.

We also got a Frieren quick flashback to one of the 7 sages...wonder who that is. Anyways that Demon that stood over Frieren combined with the other sages and Schlacht still had to all fight together to beat HOTS.

It was also cool seeing HOTS meet Frieren before she met Himmel. He also revealed his secret as to why he's the strongest...it's because he can see the future and he only got defeated by Schlacht who could do the same combined with the 7 sages.

Next we got the sword demon. Ngl I really wonder if that sword has some special power or something besides it being a famous weapon once wielded by a famous demon?

It was a cool quick fight. We got to see Stark show again why they need a frontliner. Then Frieren with the orbital strike to take it down.

Frieren also got two new spells. One apples from red to green whatever but that back scratch one? I want that.

Hero of the South was truly one of a kind. Imagine foreseeing your own death but you march towards it anyways. Sure, knowing Himmel will defeat the Demon king thanks to your aid is reassuring, but the man didn't hesitate. Such a badass!

I wouldn't mind watching a spin-off series about him one day.

20% into this season, I find myself struggling to connect with it. The artwork is beautiful, and the music is very fitting, but something feels lacking to me. I don't mind the lack of action and taking "the scenic route," but I feel like the pace is too slow.

This season's episodes go by much quicker. All the action doesn't let it have the laid back feel of season 1. Though since the 1st season had 2 cours it could take its time. I hope they aren't rushing purposely things. Southern Hero seems like a cool guy too.

A back scratching grimoire sounds more useful than your normal spell-based grimoire if its usage benefits yourself a lot. Frieren sure loves collecting the oddball variants, but she does find the underrated grimoires like this one.

The Hero of the South is such a brilliant man. He has the smart looks that goes well with how talented his skills are. Plus, his power to see into the future is really powerful, but it did mean that he could foresee his own death. What he did when he spoke to Frieren that day, as well as his actions later on, would play a big part in the defeat of the demon king. To me, this guy is every bit of a hero as Himmel is. Both of them are truly top tier heroes for sure.

After that, we got to see Frieren, Fern and Stark all work as a team in taking down a demon who stole a sword from a nobleman. Their teamwork was really good and, as usual, the action animation here was excellent. The CG explosions here were used to a pretty good effect and I would disagree to anyone who thinks they look bad for what they are.

Once again, the soundtrack remains my favourite part of this second season. Especially during the story of the Hero of the South, the soundtrack from Evan Call always hits the right note at the right time and it always gives me that goosebump feeling in my body for how well the impact of the music hits during each scene.

It makes me look forward to the Frieren Orchestra Concert in London in four months time! =)

Frieren and the hero statues, the silliest spell I’ve heard of so far has gotta be the one just for scratching an itchy back, lol. Lowkey shocked that the statue in that village was actually the Humanity's Strongest Hero.

So, is this guy actually cracked enough to outscale Frieren or Himmel? Speaking of Himmel, this is his first appearance in season 2. Facts: the Demon King is cracked, but those 7 Sages of Destruction under him are straight-up terrifying—Aura being one of them. Between the vasectomies and the dispatched prostitution, the heroes in Frieren really be going through it.

Also, don't forget Frieren literally went to that village just to stack some coin. If they had just grabbed the mana crystals in the last episode, she wouldn't even have to stress about coin anymore. If those crystals seal her magic, why not just let Stark carry them? Then Frieren wouldn't have to scrap with some thief demons for literal pocket change

@Syureria Current day Frieren is +\- equal to 1 Sage of Destruction (Aura was a perfect match for her so it does not count)
Back in days it require entire team to beat one of them (Immortal Bose) in very tough fight (but to be fair, Immortal Bose is very strong - probably he in top 10 characters in Frieren in terms of power)

Pretty nice that The Hero of the South was hyping up Himmel before he was even born. Talk about pre-glazing. Well-deserved though. And yet another silly spell added to Frieren's collection. Are green apples worth more or what?
