| Here's where you can introduce yourself! You can include why you are being/trying to be more healthy or how long it's been since the lifestyle change. Anything really. It's up to you. I'm Mai. I've had ups and downs with workingout/dieting but I'm really trying to just maintain where I am now. My weakness really is dieting, but mainly with sweets and booze lol. When I workout, I mainly do cardio, with some light weight training. I'd like to get more into interval training. I also do a good bit of Group Exercise classes like Zumba. Took a boxing course last spring. My goal is to gradually be able to run a 5 K consistently, or at least continue increasing my endurance. Nice to meet you all! |

MaiTai said: My weakness really is dieting, but mainly with sweets and booze lol. Hi, Mai. I'm experimenting with intermittent fasting. I only eat one meal per day, and that forces me to try to choose a healthy diet. I used to eat real chocolate with none of that soy lecithin garbage, but I don't even have room for that anymore. Supercolin said: Hello I'm Colin, I really never worked out much and I only started a few months ago I enjoy swimming and riding bikes. Hi, Colin. I heard that swimming is a great exercise, because it forces you to work so many of your muscles at the same time. I know how to swim, but I just don't like the water. Personal preference. Watch out for the bike riding. Sitting on a narrow seat can impair your fertility. I prefer not to sit down, but if I had to ride a bike, then I would get one of those recumbent bicycles with a basket on it for cargo. As for myself, my name is Tim. I live in Texas, but I don't want to identify myself completely, because I think I would lose my job. It's hard to believe, but I do have enemies. When I'm not working, I jog and lift every day, but I'm not a power lifter. I just get my reps in like it's a religion. I don't do much spot training. I mainly hit the major muscle groups. |

| <--- Names right there, though I prefer Astros or a version of it. I've been attempting to make my diet more healthy since about two years ago when I took a look at my health. Just recently put together a workout routine to follow that I found appealing. My biggest problem with working out is finding the right routine for my goals. Which while not being too hard to achieve they are a bit specific. In a general sense I just want to be healthy. Though I want to be able to depend on my body and it's strength if the time comes for it. I don't want to suffer for my own weakness later on and possibly die from it. So being able to run a mile without much effort or climbing a thirty foot rope without being winded are goals I have in mind at the moment. If the chance arises later in life I might take up rock climbing. My workout is mainly built on body-weight exercises and cardio. My goal with it is to build functional endurance strength. I have no interest in lifting competitions or the sort, just being able to move and support my own body-weight relatively easily. |

| Hey I'm Mark from Australia. I've been hitting the gym for 3 years now, currently cutting hard and taking my diet seriously for the first time instead of just eating whatever and working hard to maintain weight. I gym 7 times a week, with 2 pure cardio sessions. I lift heavy then watch an episode or two of anime on the treadmill to warm down and burn a few more calories and keep the fitness up. For pure cardio I do bit of HIIT (high intensity interval training) followed up with my usual anime treadmill watching crap. I've played sports my whole life, mainly baseball, tennis and various forms of martials. |

| Thanks. MaiTai said: I generally listen to music when working out, but I wonder how I'd like it watching anime. I drop music for my weight training, but cardio bores me with just music. With watching anime on the treadmill screen, it get's my mind off how long I've been walking/running for since each ep is roughly 24mins, which is a solid amount of calories. That being said if I'm outdoors and not on a treadmill I usually just use music, since my areas got pretty beautiful scenery. |

| Also HIIT would be great for you MaiTai since your goal is to run 5km consistency. Get the heart rate beating crazy, training your lungs to intake air more consistently and easier. Throw a HIIT or two in a week since it's pretty taxing on the body. |

I can't believe I never thought of watching anime on the treadmill. How do you do it? The treadmills here are packed in like sardines, so I know that I would get some stares, but I don't care. I'm lining up entire seasons right now. |

| Hey guys, new man on the club. I'm Rakin, you can call me Rafa (short for Rafael) and I'm 19. I was very big in bodybuilding for a while, peaking at 93kg, 7% bf at 185 cm (205 pounds, 6'1). I did a lot of training when I was younger to condition myself since I had to do a lot of running and mountain climbing, and recently due to injures and depression I kinda let myself go. I was really big into supplements, workout routines and nutrition, to the point where I went to college for it (eventually changing into Business Economics). Today I still do mainly weightlifting, create my own workouts and etc. Just trying to get my mindset back into workout to get motivated to get strong and lean again so I can compete in a competition I had to post-pone. Looking forward to chatting with you all! |

Aww dude my gyms ALWAYS packed and I used to PT at this gym. So people talk to me and shit and work in. So when I'm on the treadmill and they come over to talk and see what I'm watching (which is cardcaptor sakura atm, imagine that) their always drop the "what the fuck are you watching" line. Which I could care less what others think of me lol. |

| Well, I'm Sebastian. I've been out of the gym for quite some time and I'm starting to notice the aftermath, so my goal right now is to cut down a bit of bodyfat. The overall goal, however, is to simply become stronger. I dislike feeling physically weak. My previous experience involves karate, kendo, biking and around 8 months at the gym. This past year has been no exercise at all, though, so now I'm back on square one. When the new semester starts (around August 22nd) I'm planning on going to the gym we have at campus. Life is going to be pretty much study -> gym -> sleep, but that's the price I'll have to pay. Looking forward to seeing everyone's tips and progress. So, yeah, hi! |

Stalker-tan said: My previous experience involves karate, kendo, biking and around 8 months at the gym. Hi, Sebastian. I used to practice kendo and iaido, but I stopped because I wore out my shoulder. It got so painful that I had trouble lifting my sword. I wasn't lifting weights at the time, so I probably should have been working out my shoulders. Do you know of any exercises that kendo players do to protect themselves? |

| Well, the most important thing was to stretch both before and after exercising. It takes quite a strain naturally, since it's repetetive movements done over and over again (sometimes we did something called a "swing circle", sounds wrong translated but anyhow we swinged our shinai in unison for 100 up to 800 times). It was one of the side reasons to why I quit, but the times were too inflexible and that was my major reason. I think Iaido and Kendo should both be complemented by reverse movement exercises (pulling vs pushing, front vs back etc.) so that you don't get an uneven muscle structure. That, and ergonomic exercises for wrists and feet. I'm not too experienced in Kendo, I only did it for about half a year, but that's my experience. |

Rakin said: I find that stretching after a weightlifting workout can be very harmful though. Straining torn muscle fibers is a no no Yeah, I agree. In martial arts it's extremely important though, since it's mostly techniques using the body as material, there's not really any added weights other than maybe armor of some kind and/or a fairly light weapon. Stretching your legs, arms and shoulders after an hour of repetitive swings and running felt godlike. In the gym I do some stretching if I've done a fairly long workout, but I don't stretch for very long at all. It just makes me feel less sore, I haven't really experienced anything negatively by doing so. Tim_ said: I never did any stretching, Sebastian, so it's no wonder that I had such problems. Well yeah, there's the problem. Stiff joints for repetitive exercises tend to not feel so good. Imagine sprinting for as long as you can without having a proper warmup, wouldn't be so pleasant. |

| I'd second that stretching after a workout can be harmful. I'd recommend just keep the muscle group you trained warm with a jumper or track pants post workout and possibly warm down for 10 minutes on a treadmill. |

| I agree with the martial arts stretching 100% as well though! Forgot to stretch before and after MMA (more like neglected) and my back and knee problems from it proved to be a pain in the ass. Not to mention flexibility! |

| My name's SuperHands, I have super hands. I want to have naisu bodi like my idol, Bruce Lee. I've always been a slim yet very sporty individual, however exercising in order to look good is not my motivation, nor would I say I'm doing it because I desire or am required to become more healthy, as I'm already very healthy. Exercise, for me, is a result of my urge to challenge myself, mentally and physically, as well as an outlet for my abundance of energy; the physique and health benefits are just a bonus. Life story impending. It was in my early teens that I started making a conscious effort to exercise. I was mostly ignorant on the matter and would just do press-ups, sit-ups, and all sorts of shit with my brother's dumbbells. When I was around 14/15 I stopped using the dumbbells and got a chin-up bar and started to use that. Eventually I progressed to doing weighted calisthenic exercise, then brought a weight vest when the weight I had was no longer satisfactory. It was around that time that I discovered my other passion, the Piano, and soon after I'd reached my peak physical fitness, I realised that my upper body exercise was interfering with my Piano playing, and so decided to take an indefinite break. I decided to focus on my cardiovascular/respiratory fitness two years ago, and got into running. It was then that I'd learn a cruel lesson about overwork. I attempted to run a mile with 30kg on when I’d never ran with more than 20kg on and hadn't recovered from the previous days run either, which resulted in terrible shin splints. Of late I’ve been doing strictly isometric exercise and I think I’m going to stick with that and maybe running & skipping for the foreseeable future. However I'm currently dealing with recurring shin splints, tendonitis in my wrists that appeared at the beginning of this year, and I've recently pulled my right set of quadriceps, so I can’t really do shit at the moment, in fact exercise is very close to the bottom on my list of priorities, so I don't really know why I joined this club, but who knows what'll happen; the club is still young, as am I. That’s wassup. |

Since you already pulled your quadricep, it may be too late, but I'm trying to protect my hamstring by doing squats. I may switch to exercises that isolate the hamstring. As for Bruce Lee, I think he should have married a Chinese woman. |

| Hi, I'm Jacob of the United States. As of right now I'm running 5-6 times a week for cross country. I'm a decent runner; to give some idea I can run a 5:59 mile and can run at an easy pace for somewhere near an hour. I try to lift as much as possible because I need the strength for the upcoming wrestling season, but I don't have a gym membership so I have to pay every time I go. My problems would be that I don't eat unhealthy often, but when I do I eat WAY too much. My goal right now is to run a sub 20 minute 5k by the end of the season. Nice to meet you all! |

Wasn't Bruce Lee a Chinese man? I was jogging every day, and I would add a mile here and there just for kicks, but I must have overdone it. Now, I'm stuck walking, and I'm doing squats and leg curls to try and build up my strength. My leg was starting to feel better, but I ran across a street because of heavy traffic, and I could feel the pain radiate down my hamstring to my calf. Sonic0 said: I try to lift as much as possible because I need the strength for the upcoming wrestling season, but I don't have a gym membership so I have to pay every time I go. Hi, Jacob. Watch out for a promotion at your local gym. I used to not have a gym membership, because I thought their prices were too high, but then they offered a $10/month special. It was supposed to be temporary, but I seem to have somehow gotten it converted to a life membership. Awesome! The other people at my gym are paying $50/month or more, so let's just keep this between us. |

| Welcome to the club Kira! If you need any help whatsoever with a dieting plan, workout regime or general motivation don't be afraid to ask! Personally I'd be happy to help. Here's a few initial to keep in mind if your in the mood to read a wall of text. A few things to keep in mind when you first start working out and changing your eating habits is to firstly get enough water into your system each day to boost your metabolism and cleanse your body, around 2litres is a good amount for almost everybody. Secondly getting 5 serves of fruit and veg per day is awesome to have if you can, fruit and veg (besides potatos and corn) are full of non-starchy carbs which will really help improve fat loss. Lastly, do be afraid to take days off! If your bodies aching and your not feeling any energy even after having a meal don't be afraid to rest that day, especially in the early stages of beginning to transition into working out regularly. |

| Hi, Kira. Instead of trying to base your self-esteem on the way you look, maybe you could consider being proud of who you are and where you came from. I exercise to preserve my health into my old age, so I can continue my work as long as possible, be it taking care of my immediate family or my extended kin through political aspirations. I certainly don't care what most people think of my appearance. Having said that, I posted some tips in the [Advice Lounge], but I'll add something new here. After I read a book called Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis, I eliminated all cereals like wheat and oats from my diet. Dr. Davis writes in his book that genetically modified wheat is used today, so it causes inflammation and other ill effects in your body. If you do try to stop eating stuff like bread and pasta, then be prepared to experience the symptoms of withdrawal. People have compared it to the cessation of an addictive drug. |

| Hi! Uhhh I'm 15 and I'm somewhat new to weightlifting. I started learning how to weight lift from professionals when I was like 12 but I got caught up with track and cross country (both demanded a lot of my time) and it wasn't until this year (sophmore) they provided a weight lifting class, so now I have time to weight lift agian (Yeaay!) I've tried a lot of different sports in the past but because I used to do cross country I rarely had the time to (but i'm starting to have time to do them) I've tried Bouldering, Snowboarding, and MMA in the past (Trying to start kickboxing now) The reason I stopped cross country was because my freshmen year I was 2nd fastest of my class and participated in some varsity races, which caused my coach to have high expectations from me, but at the time I was also dealing with harsh internal conflicts and it affected my grades so I had to let go of it. I find bodybuilding actually really fascinating. It's a sport, science, and art. I actually don't know why I like weight lifting so much, but a small reason is because i'm amazingly skinny with a crazy metabolism which causes me to never gain weight... (I've tried calorie counting and if it will fit your macros and all that stuff but overtime it kinda just... stopped lol.) My goal is to basically get bigger lol (Not the professional bodybuilding large just bigger) but yeah I find this stuff really cool and hope to learn some cool things. |
