| Yokohama Shopping Log (Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou) is a beautiful two episode OVA from 1998. The closest modern show to it would be something like Girl's Last Tour, and if you enjoyed that show I can't recommend this one highly enough. It follows the life of Alpha, an android left running a cafe in the most peaceful post-apocalypse I've seen yet. It's one of the loneliest, too. There are a grand total of 5 characters, and hardly more onscreen conversations. The show is just as light on music and plot. Not a lot happens, we spend most of the time watching Alpha go about her daily routine in the cafe and the brief sections where she travels outwards to explore the world and talk to the other characters. What the show lacks in excitement and tension it more than makes up for with some of the best visuals hand drawn animation has to offer. Nearly every background wouldn't look out of place as a painting, and the character animation is full of charming detail. Of course, just being pretty isn't enough to make the show good. Watching Alpha bumblestumble her way through finding meaning in her lonely immortality is genuinely heartwarming. The best scenes are the ones where she's sitting with another character taking in the scenery, sharing in the beauty of the world. They're even better contrasted against the scenes where she's doing the exact same thing all alone and it feels like something's missing. Personally this was a favorite for me before the first episode even finished, and considering there's only two episodes I highly recommend giving it a shot! |
| I've been thinking of watching this series for a while, and hearing that it's similar to Girls' Last Tour really interests me! From your description it sounds amazing, so I guess I better get round to watching it |
