Thought provoking. Introspective. Inspired. A philosophical magnum opus. Such are descriptors I might possibly or not possibly use on the 2019 anime Fruits Basket, which was placed upon by me the score of 7. However there is one engrossing and absorbing element of that show which has kept me thinking in retrospect, that being the character Saki Hanajima. Special abilities belonged to this character and were known by other characters as "wave powers,"; -- - such supernatural abilities were deeply explored and analyzed in an episode called “Episode 22”. Though I felt this issue was not one well-suited for Fruits Basket, I also surmised that I would enjoy an additional anime specifically exploring that same issue.

And now have I obtained that show. It has been obtained by me. The anime. Known to us as Kotoura-san. From the origination, the genesis, the first episode, of this TV series it begins to explore the absorbing issue from Fruits Basket which had absorbed me into being absorbed by it. It was a deep exploration of the profound effects such an ability as that of hearing the thoughts in the minds of others would have on an individual and their social and personal life. The intense resulting bullying and isolation. The fortuitous incidental strain on relationships. A plethora of matters and postulations of said matters were introduced. The intricacies of the first few minutes truly blew me away.

What follows is an introspective, analytical review of the anime, Kotoura-san. If you are not familiar with said media and would prefer to avoid being spoiled, you should not continue. To truly experience my analysis, a focused viewing of at least the first episode is recommended. If you have not watched at least one episode, do not press the button which reads "Show Spoiler."

That first episode had me laughing my ass off. Mostly at how extraordinarily cruel it was. At first I felt some sympathy for little Kotoura, but then it just kept getting more and more absurd.

Like. That cat. That she was feeding. I can kinda get why that random old lady would take it to a shelter, but why was she so mad at Kotoura?? What does she have against a child feeding a stray cat? What right did she have to tell Kotoura to never come to what appeared to be some sort of park again?? How dare she show kindness to a small animal in public!

The show did an awful job of using her mind reading powers too. You'd think that would affect her every interaction, every word someone else said outloud would be compared to their inner monologue, but it comes and goes as the show pleases, mostly showing up when they want to make her sadder. Like, in the last scene, where the dude was saying he'd never leave her. That would've been a perfect opportunity to show his inner thoughts matching the words he was saying but I guess she just didn't feel like reading his mind at that moment?

I did find the scene where she read window dudes mind for the first time genuinely funny, which I think the show was actually going for, so credit where credit is due I guess?

Episode 1 was definitely worth a watch, I do not feel any desire to watch the rest.

The first part definitely starts feeling very over the top towards the end. And you're right in saying that the show doesn't really focus on Kotoura's ability enough. As the series goes on it slowly recedes into only being used for comedic purposes. Other the one joke of Kotoura seeing the guy's sexual thoughts it becomes a basic slice of life show. Dropping it after episode 1 was a good choice
