| If we are talking about the canon couples, then I guess that would have to be Sayu and Kaname. Everything just seemed right with those two together, nothing barf about it. I just wish we had more scenes between them. Tsumugu and Chisaki is just barf. They do belong together because their personalities post-time skip do mesh, but just barf. I just didnt like how Chisaki just ignored Kanames confession. She never gave him a proper reply Hikari and Manaka, just so annoying. |

| Just finished the series as a first time watcher, and I have to say out of the canon couples Kaname & Sayu has to be my favourite. While I really like Chisaki and Tsumugu (especially watching the short scenes where they grew together in those 5 years) and their more established relationship, Kaname has always been one of the characters I felt I could relate too out of the cast (the other being Miuna) and Sayu really grew on me a lot, so my bias makes me gravitate towards these two. I honestly would love to see more of them over the next fews month as they tried to navigate their feelings towards each other — I feel it would be adorable to watch! Alas, I am 7 years to late to petition anything haha. I am also at peace with Manaka and Hikari. Miuna is my favourite character out of all of the cast and I relate to her a lot as well, so I really wanted her to win (in my mind I like to believe the ending was open enough that it could still happen!), but I feel that narratively Hikari always maintained his feelings towards Manaka, and I can respect that. The last thing I would want is Miuna ending up with a Hikari who views her as the alternative to Manaka if that didn't work out, or one that just pitied her. That would have felt fake to me — so by the last few episodes I knew it wouldn't happen since there just wasn't enough narrative time left without it feeling forced. But at least Miuna is happy in the end, and that makes me happy :) So really, if I had to rank everyone, here's how I would do so (including my own, non-canon ships in italics):

However, I thought I'd better finish the series first before making a post and I'm glad I did. First, Tsumugu x Chisaki, are the most desirable couple and I was glad to see these two finally come to terms. Waiting for someone for 5 years, especially when they're right in front of you takes the utmost patience and courage, but Tsu persevered. Although I do feel he was a bit slow in letting his feeling known, as I, at first, thought he had feelings for Manaka. I was on the fence with Chisaki for a bit, but she eventually grew on me; she was sacrificing too, in her own way and the guilt is what kept her from seeing what was developing between her and Tsu. Second, the most deserving couple - Kaname and Sayu - I felt those two from the beginning and then brushed it off because she was just a kid. He was the only honest one of the bunch and responded in the most mature manner. Anyone looking at Sayu could tell she was crushing. I could feel her attraction, even though she was young, which makes her feelings more plausible than Miuna's whose just cropped up out-of-the blue and in Hikari's absence. You go, Kaname, you finally found someone who loves you, Third, I am a firm Hikari and Manaka fan. There was a lot of hurt, suffering, and misunderstood love for these two to not end up with each other. I am glad the ending turned out the way it did, or I would have been extremely disappointed. In my opinion, Miuna has not suffered like Hikari nor Manaka. You haven't walked their path yet, little one. Hikari put in more effort than anyone and does not deserve the consolation prize. Nagi no Asukara was a delight to watch; the animation/cinematography was amazing. The sea scenes were spectacular and the rollercoaster ride of emotions was nothing to sneeze at; I cheered, wept, all the while binge watching through my daily commute to work and my lunch hour. This series was well worth it. |
