| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- "So what, you have to stay alive no matter what?" (Les-san's sister-in-law) "Of course! You can always start over!" (Les-san's brother) I get that he's panicked, but his sister can very much NOT start over if she's imprisoned for life or sentenced to death. I think the brother's wife did well in bringing him back down to Earth; as much as he's hurt over his sister's future, he still has a wife and 5 (!) children to take care of, and can't afford to put them in danger further. His wife also brings up a great point in the limits of understanding another's experiences. However, while you can't perceive them the way they did, you can still exercise some empathy and meet them halfway — which the brother isn't doing, because he's letting his own moral code prevent him from beginning to process what he's witnessing in Les and Megane's actions. The fact that he "doesn't mind" that she's a lesbian completely misses the point of her coming out. He should mind i.e. care about it, because — as Les previously said — not showing compassion towards someone, and trying to pretend that they're not "a problem", is similar to not recognizing their struggles. Les-san very much minded that she was a lesbian because her family, school, life etc. experience wasn't the same as her brother's and she was treated poorly for her sexual orientation. "So what if someone's the same sex or didn't go to high school!? Just accept it! I don't think there's anything wrong with it! Everyone's free to love who they want!" (Les-san's brother) It's like he never even remembers how much his mother worried after Les-san coming out, and how Les-san had to date a guy to calm her down before her death... Where was he standing up for her in all this? |
| He never has to think too much about love. For him, love is something you fall into. His logic is: "I see a cute girl with a hot body, so I approach her. If we have a connection and decide it's enough to spend the rest of our life together, then it's love!" That's his logic. It's so simple for him, because he's privileged. He's a member of the dominant race of his country, he's wealthy, he's attractive, and he's a straight cisgender man. He's never going to understand the struggles of minorities. He doesn't understand the struggles of a woman, especially a queer woman. It's as I said before, the statement "I'm fine with X being a queer person" is the ultimate example of privilege. I'd never say, "I'm okay with my siblings being straight". That's because being straight is the "default" and it's "normal". Even the MC tried to look for a cure for being queer, and Blondie had to tell her that a queer person doesn't need to be cured. The problem is, he's stubborn and stuck in his ways. He doesn't want to understand them or empathize with them. All he cares about is himself. |
