I have some pretty niche taste, but I’ll throw in a couple anime I really enjoyed that I never really hear people talking about.
-The Melody of Oblivion- A 2004 horror/fantasy series. It’s on the bizarre and trippy side to put it generously, but it’s still by far one of the most interesting series I’ve ever watched. Some very memorable characters too.
-Pikaia- An educational anime with two seasons (2015 + 2017) about life from the Cambrian era. It’s quite unique, and the plot is surprisingly thought out, especially in the second season.
-Sola- A supernatural romance from 2007. Has a lot of vibes to the works of Key/Visual Arts, as it was written by an ex-member. It’s a short one, but captivated me from start to finish.
-Pretty Rhythm Rainbow Live- I’ll admit I’m not a huge fan of idol anime, though I’ve checked out a handful of the popular ones. This one remains the best of the genre I’ve seen. A part of the longer Pretty series (not to be confused with Pretty Cure), this 2013 season works as a standalone, features both male and female idols which is a rarity, and also spawned the admittedly-less-interesting King of Prism series.
-Genki Bakuhatsu Ganbaruger- A 1992 mecha anime and part of the Eldran series (but works as a standalone). I watched this one not long ago and came in with pretty low expectations, but it turned out to be tons of fun. The series is mostly episodic but does have an overarching plot.
-Chocotto Sister- A 2006 comedy/slice-of-life. I know the title alone intimidated me at first, expecting it to be an incest series. It’s not, though. It’s a bit ecchi, but surprisingly sweet and wholesome.
-Tomica Hyper Rescue Drive Head- A 2017 mecha anime where I can see why it’s overlooked, given it’s a toy commercial and has a very poor budget (being one of Xebec’s final works before bankruptcy). It’s got a likable cast, especially a certain antagonist I’ve been rather obsessed with since watching, and surprisingly good commentary on human nature and both the value of AIs and dangers of over-reliance on them.
-18if- A very strange, experimental anime from 2017. It’s quite hard to describe, but the fact that the show’s staff varies so much from episode-to-episode might explain some of it. This show has stayed on my mind for a pretty long time after watching it, especially the ending.
-Kagihime Monogatari: Eikyuu Alice Rondo- I will warn that this 2006 series is an ecchi show with a laughably bad budget. It’s also a series that speaks to me as a writer, because it’s all about writing. Also, just thought it was an interesting story. |
