I once came across a young writer posting original fiction under the Misc. Anime/Manga section is over on ffnet because, according to them, what they were writing was in "Anime Style," but on their profile, this young writer had a list of all the Anime they watched.  What I quickly noticed was their list was comprised of anything that could be found for free on one of the major legal Anime streaming services, but they'd also gravitated toward the newer series.

The point is, they'd limited their choices in a few ways that I knew I didn't.
- While I do have a preference for English dubs when I can get to them because of my dyslexia, this doesn't mean I won't watch a series that isn't dubbed into English.
- I don't just watch the newest season of stuff, but I look back on older seasons.
- I take advantage of the fact MAL has videos of the ones available for free right there in the Anime profile. Still, it also lets us know where a series is available, so if we have access to the streaming service, we can watch that particular series.
- I also take advantage of what streaming services I have and do look through their back catalog, particularly for older series.

My one frustration when it comes to underrated and under-popular Anime/Manga is I actually want to watch some of the black-and-white works, particularly since MAL has been making an effort to catalog their existence, but because they're older works; the Anime is not likely to be picked up outside of Japan to be licensed, which has brought me to the thought process of how some of these works have fallen into the public domain and yet nobodies thought of starting a project like Guttenberg where the ones that still exist can be achieved, even potentially dubbed for free.

But there are a lot of Anime available for free, legally. You just have to know where to find them.

I do not fully understand - you mean that someone can start to watch the title not from the first season, the beginning???

And I have problems only with Chinese anime - I guess I need to find a particular streaming service.
Because now I watch amedia.online. I discovered it by simply typing in Google "китайское аниме" (it is Russian for "Chinese anime") and clicking the first site.
I checked - it is even now the first link.
I am old-school and a bit lazy - so I use the same tracker, I started to use 14 years ago.

The last hidden gem I remember was "ID: Invader". I liked it very much but I still rate it 8/10 because of my heavy rating system.

I also find "One Outs"  before it became popular, not as popular as I hope it deserves to be. And maybe Houseki no Kuni - the same situation.

I make sure that i put “not watchable shows” on my onhold list so that i wont forget it in case if they ever get leaked. Its not that hard to find underrated shows, u just gotta know what genre to focus on that isnt shounen/ romance/ other popular genre
Sonic X is basically an isekai

Being lazy; anything on my anime favorites- I've been told some of my favorite titles are obscure but I vouch for them all and can give an explanation for each choice and my rational/ logic.

Great things I've watched this year: Kabocha Wine, Esper Mami, Ashita no Nadja, Otogi Juushi Akazukin, Yes Precure 5, etc etc etc

Am planning to watch Mahou no Yousei Persia sometime this quarter, likely gonna watch Hokuto no Ken as well. Anything else you could literally just ask me and I'd be fine with goin more in depth- suffice to say, but there's a lot lol

bam

EDIT: jfc, somehow slipped my mind- but am currently watching Futari wa Precure Max Heart and its absolute fire.

I've just finished https://myanimelist.net/anime/49163/Exception

It's en entertaning short series with interesting philosophical undertones. Unfortunately it's both unknown and underrated. Do give it a try if you have the time.
You all need to watch Nami.

If you are into Martial Arts, action 'short' story format, one Hidden Gem that I love and rewatched a couple of times is 'Shura no Toki'...
There's also 'Tears to Tiara' which is not as much of a hidden gem, but worth mentioning. Action/Adventure type!

I have some pretty niche taste, but I’ll throw in a couple anime I really enjoyed that I never really hear people talking about.
-The Melody of Oblivion- A 2004 horror/fantasy series. It’s on the bizarre and trippy side to put it generously, but it’s still by far one of the most interesting series I’ve ever watched. Some very memorable characters too.
-Pikaia- An educational anime with two seasons (2015 + 2017) about life from the Cambrian era. It’s quite unique, and the plot is surprisingly thought out, especially in the second season.
-Sola- A supernatural romance from 2007. Has a lot of vibes to the works of Key/Visual Arts, as it was written by an ex-member. It’s a short one, but captivated me from start to finish.
-Pretty Rhythm Rainbow Live- I’ll admit I’m not a huge fan of idol anime, though I’ve checked out a handful of the popular ones. This one remains the best of the genre I’ve seen. A part of the longer Pretty series (not to be confused with Pretty Cure), this 2013 season works as a standalone, features both male and female idols which is a rarity, and also spawned the admittedly-less-interesting King of Prism series.
-Genki Bakuhatsu Ganbaruger- A 1992 mecha anime and part of the Eldran series (but works as a standalone). I watched this one not long ago and came in with pretty low expectations, but it turned out to be tons of fun. The series is mostly episodic but does have an overarching plot.
-Chocotto Sister- A 2006 comedy/slice-of-life. I know the title alone intimidated me at first, expecting it to be an incest series. It’s not, though. It’s a bit ecchi, but surprisingly sweet and wholesome.
-Tomica Hyper Rescue Drive Head- A 2017 mecha anime where I can see why it’s overlooked, given it’s a toy commercial and has a very poor budget (being one of Xebec’s final works before bankruptcy). It’s got a likable cast, especially a certain antagonist I’ve been rather obsessed with since watching, and surprisingly good commentary on human nature and both the value of AIs and dangers of over-reliance on them.
-18if- A very strange, experimental anime from 2017. It’s quite hard to describe, but the fact that the show’s staff varies so much from episode-to-episode might explain some of it. This show has stayed on my mind for a pretty long time after watching it, especially the ending.
-Kagihime Monogatari: Eikyuu Alice Rondo- I will warn that this 2006 series is an ecchi show with a laughably bad budget. It’s also a series that speaks to me as a writer, because it’s all about writing. Also, just thought it was an interesting story.

I can backup @soaker87 on the rec for the PuriRhythm franchise!

Legit listen to a number of the tracks for fun outside of the hobby (so fuckin good) and its a solid entry for an idol anime interest; my patrician choice will always be Aikatsu, but this PuriRhy series has a lot of heart, some fun humor, and great music to sink into. Hell yeah, good stuff.

Manaka Laala is epic, trust:
