Set in the Edo period, the story centers on Ichitaro, the sickly heir of a major commercial store in Nihonbashi. He is protected by spirit friends, such as an inugami named Sasuke and a hakutaku named Nikichi. His life changes when he sneaks out one night and witnesses a murder, leading to his investigation.

The first episode was much better than I thought it would be, mixing the supernatural of the Yokai in the Edo period and a murder investigation was a great idea, the animation is decent and I love anime of this type, will probably watch it until the end!

Novelist Megumi Hatakenaka's 2nd adaptation since Summer 2018's Tsukumogami Kashimasu, I didn't even know they're correlated, though this historical fantasy novel was released first chronologically.

Kujira's OP is really decent...

The young master Ichitaro, ailing in health, being sent spirits from his father to help support him, both 10-year-old Inugami-Hatahaku spirit duo of Nikichi and Sasuke taking care of him for life, it's a servanthood alright. And what seems like the typical traditional period for the day, Ichitaro's secret is having these spirits at his beck and call if he needs to do things on his own private accord.

As opposed to renting spirits in Tsukumogami Kashimasu a.k.a We Rent Tsukumogami, this show featuring spirits helping Ichitaro figure out murder mysteries, it's a twist alright.

KAFUNE's ED is interesting on an artistic standpoint...

I feel even less convinced about this than Tsukumogami Kashimasu, seems to be really moving slowly. Will still give this a chance.

Reminds me of We Rent Tsukumogami but with homo energy instead of hetero, and I'm all for it.

My only criticism is it's more bloody than I expect.

This seemed like an Edo period SOL until he snuck away and ran into the murderer. Quite the atmosphere at the end.

Interesting setting and characters.
The story is not that impressing so far tho, I hope it will develop/intensify next time.

Excellent beginning episode!

Ichitarou, the young man acquainted with supernatural entities, because of his own nature? The story grows interesting.

Bit of a slow start, but I think it may get better. The animation is pretty good too.

I enjoyed this quite a lot. The mixture of 3d and 2d actually worked very well, even if it could be disjointed at times, and I liked the vibe of the show. Definitely gonna keep watching!

bit too early to tell, there's basis for a good show here but they ended the episode with a bit too many questions and not enough plot hook imo

i'll still give it a couple more eps because so far there's nothing to really complain about

Well, this has the elite distinction of being the first new series of the season I formally add to my list on MAL and elsewhere just based on the first episode watch alone rather than waiting to get further episodes and weeks into it.

But in fairness, it was one I was eyeing as an anticipated prospective watch since late last year, 2024. Originally there was no specific season announced for its airdate and for whatever reason I got the early mistaken impression that it was going to air much earlier this year, like in the very first season of the year (the winter season).

I appreciated how it largely felt like we were thrust into this world in the middle of things and expected to pick up things which the characters already know as we go along.

Given Inuyasha is my favorite series and a large part of what got me into anime, I have a natural soft spot for these historical fantasy series; especially ones involving youkai and Japanese mythology. A slow burn murder mystery, boy coming of age, perhaps some family drama and dynamics at play, etc. on top of that would be great.

Went in completely blind and it didn't exactly hook me. If anything it came across as a bit random.

Might give it another 1-2 episodes more, before I decide.

I was starting to think this season was going to be a bust. I'm glad I watched this. Great start. And so far the best OP & ED this season.

Interesting choice for the style of the ED, probably its the original music video? I still have to warm up to the show but I liked the setting.

Brilliant series premiere! The episode flew by; I could've watched another twenty minutes!

I thought the visuals were beautiful. I particularly enjoyed the muted color palette and clean character-design.

The writing is interesting, too. I like that they don't over-explain things and let us discover how the spirits work. The way they're setting the mystery up is fun, too!

I have been checking out the new releases for Fall 2025. After viewing two very cliche' anime, Shabake was a breath of fresh air. Well done Edo period setting. A main character that has many limitations but a host of spirits supporting him.
And now a modern touch. A serial killer. Looking forward to Ichitaro's detective work.

@phantomfandom I'm not familiar with the original novel, but the anime clearly enjoys bishonen appeal, so it's likely aimed at the famous female fans of Japanese history.

Seems like it's gonna be a bad ending in the last episode but who know... Because I think since the MC's already too weak, it's not gonna take a long time to died...
