So after suffering through the massive step down from the OG series that was Zeta, I'm struggling to see how it could possibly get any worse. Honestly, going for a more a comedic tone seems to be a fitting direction after the overly serious, incoherent nonsense that was Zeta, and it sounds kind of intriguing for that reason lol. Should I watch it, or should i just not bother? I don't want to sit through another 50 eps of disappointment.

It's part of the story of the Univeral Century. I'd recommand you to watch it, even just to know what happen in the story. It has flaws, but I find the pacing better than Zeta.

I say: yes. You described pretty well, more or less, how I felt about Zeta in general. I liked the original series a lot, but Zeta really did feel like incoherent nonsense at times. I wasn't sure whether to pick up ZZ, since it's a sequel to Zeta, and I remember being worried it might be more of the same. I also read that it handled the overall tone differently, so I decided to give it a try. I don't regret it at all. I liked it a lot.

Sure, it has goofy moments, but in my opinion they fit the overall plot and characters much better than in Zeta. When it comes to characters making dumb, irresponsible, or illogical decisions, it's pretty much on Zeta's level, but the lighter tone makes everything far more pleasant to watch overall.

Deciding to try ZZ despite some vocal "hardcore Gundam fans" constantly trashing it while simultaneously glazing Zeta as "peak Gundam", and me ending up enjoying ZZ, also convinced me that it might not be a bad idea to pay more attention to the things those fans overly criticize, because they can actually be really fun to watch. Watching Victory solidified that mindset for me - it's honestly a good approach when checking out Gundam series I haven't seen yet, lol. Maybe it could help you as well.

ZZ is the polar opposite of Z so you'd probably like it

if you didn't like Zeta you won't like ZZ. it's different but still from the same director. I didn't start learning how to appreciate Tomino's directed anime until watching and reading a lotnof essays about it so you're not alone in finding his work impenetrable.

If that's how you feel about ZZ, DEFINITELY give it a chance.

If you’re trying to do a full Universal Century watch-through or if you plan to continue watching UC Gundam series that are later in the timeline, I would suggest watching it. As others have said, I liked MSG, didn’t care for Zeta that much, but thought ZZ was much better, even though it starts off very lackluster in my opinion.

Once you get through the beginning of ZZ, I think it gets very entertaining and actually pretty good story-wise overall, especially for when it was made. I would also say the reward for watching all of ZZ, if you’re doing a UC watch-through, is the great series that come after like Char’s Counterattack, War in the Pocket, Stardust Memory, 8th MS Team, MS Igloo and then finally Unicorn.

I really enjoyed everything that followed and ZZ was a bit of momentum for me to get my UC watch-through really moving after struggling and slowly staggering through Zeta.

Hope this helps! Enjoy whatever you watch!

Also, the UC stuff after Unicorn is amazing too, but I was just trying to highlight that especially once you get to Unicorn the story and animation and everything comes together and looks great and is very enjoyable.

If you hated zeta but liked msg then yes you should give zz a shot. It’s still incoherent nonsense but in a more fun way. Judau isn’t necessarily the most compelling UC protagonist, but he is the most likable imo. By no means does it fill you in on any gaps between zeta and Cca, and it can feel like a very long filler arc, but it’s still a good time with some high points. It’s no msg but it’s very unique fs.

It's good, and eases into the more serious tone in the 2nd half really well. Judau and Haman are great characters too.

Definitely give it a shot, you've got nothing to lose. If you don't like the first few episodes, you can just drop it.

Decided to give it a shot. so far so good. the sense of levity is refreshing, and judau is already a lot more likeable than kamille was. I am loving mashymere though, he is absolutely ridiculous, but in an endearing way, like say, char's mask.
