THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
As one if the younger people of this site, I wasn't even born when this anime came out, nor was I alive during most of the time this took place. Despite that, I decided to watch this after hearing a lot about it and liking other anime involving the otaku culture and wanting to know more about it.

It was rather enjoyable to see. I haven't yet talked about the first part, but the second part al went too fast... I prefer slow slice of life. Of course I understand that in only a OVA they have to go fast, especially if they want to express the life of a person over a span of about forty years, but it made it seem extremely unrealistic. Despite that, it was quite funny at some parts, especially Tanaka's ridiculousness and the sudden outburst of our main character.

Overall it was nice and I don't regret watching it, but it wasn't like I expected.

I can't really tell if all that has happened on this episode, or most of it, was real or just an otaku illusion. Specially with such an ending. If it really was real, then it's just silly, even for its time.

It could've been an attempt to lighten things up for those who thought that their conclusions about otaku and their hobbies were too harsh.

Well that certainly went in a different direction to the first episode didn't it. I think I would have preferred it to stay the way it was going perhaps if they'd have ended with the opening of the first company, GP. But all in all, pretty enjoyable.

Gainax at it's best. It was cool to see certain anime references. It shows how they were important and the impact they had at the time (and still have).

How can you say it was silly, I mean, the otaku will live on, even after dead. [or thats the way I felt it.]

Was quite an enjoyable last episode! The whole ova was rather interesting, having going on interviewing otaku's and a little story on how life can change drastically but still can be fixed in the end!

But damn I sure hate that betraying bitch...

Really nice ending though! Quite interesting take on the OVA.

The story was a bit cheesy but the documentary portions were very informative and gave me a good glimpse into the developing otaku culture; well worth the watch.

I really wish I could montage my way to the top of a successful corporation.

Glad I watched this, it was quite interesting and had an entertaining story.

The mock interviews were pretty funny - I liked the one with the guy who constantly records anime but doesn't watch any of it.

I found the anime portion to be rather dry and lacking, and for me, the 'Portrait of an Otaku' sections were the highlight. That isn't to say that the anime portion doesn't have its moments, of course, but I largely prefer the live-action bits. They work well together, too -- just when I was getting a bit sick of the animation portion, it cuts to 'Portrait of an Otaku', bringing me back into the OVA. 'Portrait of an Otaku' is the soul of the work -- to me, at least.

Really liked the interviews and realistic parts, the anime moments were a nice bonus and not boring either. But it definitly was fast paced and anime part got unrealistic at the end, shouldve left out the last part after otakuland

The highlight of the show are the interviews, indeed. Specially how they progressively get less serious overtime and the conclusion fragments after them showing those supposed statistics.

Absolutely classic stuff. Gainax had such an impressive energy and creativity. Otaku no video remains an absolutely essential document on the rise of otaku culture. Although the formats and delivery have changed, a lot of the spirit and obsesiveness remain the same.

I think a lot of the Gainax crowd had a healthy attitude towards their otakuism. It was their life, their obsession, but they were aware that they were a part of the world and one shouldn't close oneself off from others. That message kept on being conveyed in other of their work, including NGE.

I enjoyed this and found it kind of interesting even though it's impossible to tell the lies from the truth with these guys. But that's to be expected with early Gainax. I do wish they had spent more time telling the story of "Gaint X" as an anime company though rather than that extremely silly last section about the future.

Now that a day has gone by since I watched it, I think my verdict on this is that while it is an interesting piece, both as a portrial of otaku culture and as something made at a turning point Gainax's history, it has too many problems to actually be enjoyable. Mostly it's how the "interviews" are handled, how they are inserted is a bit jarring and needlessly break up the anime sections and make them harder to follow than they would have been. Also, I know the pieces are trying to make me feel uncomfortable, but I feel like at times they go a bit too far and ruin the experience, same goes for Guinax's normal (at the time) trolly antics, it makes for a piece that's muddled and confusing in it's intent. Though I am glad I watched it, I can't say that I "enjoyed" it.

This was definitely worth the watch, especially Hideaki Anno playing a Gainax hentai game xD

I didn't get the meaning of seemingly random cuts with certain calendar events though. Did they have some impact on otaku or something?

Also, I love shows that provide some meta-commentary, but damn, this was something else, I almost died when I saw the crew "hunt down" a "rare otaku" at the end xD The "statistics" were also nice, Gainax did the same later in Kare Kano.

Seriously, the story behind Grand Prix (General Products) and GX (Gainax) left a huge smile on my face x)
It even ended up in space, again! So typical of Gainax. The whole message was, I think, a warning? The people who did this clearly understand the shortcominds of being an otaku and try to "balance" it out. Pretty much the same they did with NGE - they are otaku, they make products for otaku, but they want this community to be better. This OVA has probably the same message (especially when they were interviewing the storyboard thief, lol; I wonder if his story was real)

Enjoyment: 3/5 I thought the park would be a giant Macross. How disappointed I was to get a kind of Gunbuster.

It had the Macross structure though.
From the OnV liner notes:
In-jokes about Tokyo Otakuland itself: the structure is based on the SDF-1 Macross, but its arms are the Nautilus and New Nautilus from Nadia, its torso is from Yuusha Raideen (Brave Raideen, another pre-Gundam Tomino Yoshiyuki giant-robot series), and its legs are from Tetsujin 28goo.

This second part was far more interested in being fun than the frst one, but didn't forget the original tone despite breaking the balance a bit.
Seeing the raise/fall of Grand Prix and GX was nice although a bit long. Luckily, the "Portraits" kept coming at the right time.

Also, I had no idea I wanted to see King play the role of Posi and Nega.

Enjoyment: 3/5 I thought the park would be a giant Macross. How disappointed I was to get a kind of Gunbuster.

A fun celebration of "otaku" smartly complemented by staged "interviews" and the hero's fall depicted in the 1st OAV followed by his raise turning his and others passion into a business, all the while remembering us of events in the real world those people were escaping. Lots of winks at famous titles. It looks at this "phenomenon" in both a loving and "scolding" way, as expected from GAINAX.

Score: 8/10

And thus, the road to EVA continued...

@St0rmblade I thought the news bits were here to produce a constrast between what's going on in the world (or even closer to those young adults) and how enclosed they are around the thing(s) they like.

I noticed the two ships from Nadia used to make the Macross-like ship arms. Thanks for the other parts.

edit: I knew that I knew this voice (the hero/singer), it's Tylor/Seabook/Bernie !

I personally liked the first episode better. This second episode was a bit fast-paced and disregarding the ending scene, it seemed far-fetched. It felt like a couple of middle schoolers playing make-believe or sitting at a lunch table envisioning their rapid success. I liked how the central casts' ideas are presented as efficient and innovative, but the miraculous, overnight success ruined the immersion. I got really irked when the MC's friend said, "and our Beverly Hills mansions are finally read," or something like that -- this dialogue just carelessly chucked in to future portray the characters' success.. and really instating the fantasy, make-believe aspect. Episode 2 reminded me of what we do in bed -- shutting our eyes and fantasizing about our futures, often watching our imagination run on 2-4x speed, before drifting into sleep. You could say the "Planet Otaku" bit was when we hypothetically enter REM sleep hehe.

The Tanaka character wasn't utilized enough either. Very underused. He's got such a distinctive look, almost as if based off someone from the Gainax company. I think he should've been the MC's "saving grace" or "inspiration." Obviously, Tanaka kicked off the MC's passion, and served as a loyal companion throughout... but... I feel like after the MC lost his position as a president, he should've fell into a depressing slum only for Tanaka to swoop in and say something inspirational. They painted the MC as some grand inventor, but it would've been a lot more humbling and endearing if Tanaka guided the MC thru success, instead of the other way around. Because, throughout Episode 2, Tanaka really didn't have a primary role like he did in Episode 1 (introducing the MC to otaku culture). He just served as the MC's second-hand-man who followed him around everywhere and smiled. The MC is presented as the hardworker and the INITIAL otaku Tanaka is kind of just there. In the end, I'm dissatisfied with the character execution and Tanaka's lack of growth or relevance.

The OVA was alright. It was entertaining. This was yet another opportunity to learn about the Japanimation industry, in a meta/self-aware kind of sense and thru the art of visual storytelling. I can appreciate the homage to Daicon (a gorgeous short film) and Urusei Yatsura, amongst other references. I can also appreciate the spoof of Gainax's origins, as being simple college students with a dream that they can bring to reality. But cramming decades of fame and fortune into a single episode (Episode 2)... ehhh, it didn't work. I rate this series a 6/10, because anything that is a 5 or under is what I'd classify as bad. And this anime was not bad. It wasn't great either, though. But it was something to do on a Wednesday night... an experience, to say the least.

ok. after this second episode, it makes more sense to me as to why this is considered a classic. seeing the characters' hard working nerdiness turn into big time decision making was pretty cool. i especially liked that they talked about the growing involvement of major companies in the anime industry, given that we're seeing that happen ourselves right now. and now that i was better prepared for it, i enjoyed the increasingly demeaning interviews hahaha.

i was not expecting it to get smart in those bits about the business side of otaku culture. i thought it was gonna stay mean to the end, so that was a pleasant surprise. also, i dunno if those were sets or real people's rooms in those interviews. if they were sets, those were some really detailed sets. if they weren't.... they matched the person being interviewed. either way, i really liked the sets. i also wasn't expecting sea level rise to have a part in this story, although i could've done without the resulting scene.

i really like things like Otaku No Video that have the ability to regain relevance in a different time. the first episode was kinda what i thought it was going to be - a snap shot of the 90's. but the second episode went further and gave some insight into the corporate aspect of the anime industry that is continuing on to this day on a larger scale. if the second episode would have just given us more of the first episode, i would have doubted the people that call Otaku No Video a classic. but after watching the second episode, i can understand why it continues forward to this day.

i like that part where they chase down that guy to try talk to him and he just ends up pushing them down on to some bikes to get away haha fricken hilarious i don't know what the hell. It was about him stealing some cels right? wait was he that same cel stealing guy in previous interview ah probably not but yea this scene def was fake and not real right? just more gainax employees involved i take it.

Great ending, loved the positivity. So did they die of old age and were essentially dreaming? Or was it all just "young at heart" cosplaying again?

Anyway, this wasn't as grand as I thought it would be but I can see it being a classic. I liked the anime part more than the interviews and feel I might've liked it a lot more if I had watched the anime-only cut.

at least the live action parts are less cringe in this one.

although I think the actual anime segments were slightly better in the last one.

"you see something?" as he's looking into the sun was funny.

overall the entire thing is not a touch on daicon tho, maybe an unfair comparison, I'm still not really sure how they're related.

I wish Otakuland was a real place, I often wish Japan had a lot more anime attractions. Like obviously there's some but I feel like there should be a lot more.
