Damn Anko's dad for getting himself caught up in that affair. With his daughter's life on the line he royally screwed up the chances of the Zearth story getting out to the public. The government doesn't seem to give a damn about the kids so their options have shrunk even more now.

At least we now know the order of who'll be fighting next and the fact that there's more to come after it. Dung Beetle said the Earth's battles would be done after the adults but then he's saving Yoshikawa for the "final job". So the last survivor really isn't going to walk free. I thought Dung Beetle was really pissed off towards the end and would switch it up the order but he didn't. He also made it sound like he could bend certain rules on a whim. Kana never signed up but he's sparing her for whatever this final job is. So perhaps the contract isn't completely necessary somehow? I'm thinking there must be some sort of significance in keeping Yoshikawa alive. He seemed to have some sort of revelation as to who the real boss is behind all the fighting.

Can't wait to see more of this.

Same as what I was thinking. Those guys in white though... there even was a mother with her child (or at least it looked like it), would she be part of a gang that invents such a screwed up system?

I'm also wondering what the bruise on Machi's cheek was, did her brother sort of beat her? The old woman Machi stayed with didn't seem to be the kind of person who would, so it has to be someone else.. I don't know. Looking forward to more.

Machi's bruise I figured was from the last episode. She did get smacked around quite a bit by Anko after it was learned she's the one that is not contracted.

Now... there's something bugging me about this episode. There was shot at Zearth's eye (right at the beginning of the battle) which showed 4 lights. Only 4 lights? Wth? I'm counting 7 people contracted. So what's up? Dung Beetle's statement even made more confused. He picked up the order and said only Yoshikawa would be left. But if there's only 4 lights then that would mean 3 of them would survive.
So maybe like you said, tainteddonut the contract doesn't have that much meaning?
Blah... that shot is really bugging me... Anyone has any ideas? ^_^

Edit: here's the screenshot on the eye.

I was also surprised by the vision Kanji had... Of all things I did not expect the mastermind to be normal people dressed in white... o.O.
Well, looking forward to the next episode.

Ya, I think that was it. She really deserves some bruises.

There really is supposed to be 6 lights. However I thought about the number of lights too and the thing is, it's technically correct if you're counting only the original pilots. At the time of that screenshot 10 lives have been lost (9 kids + Chizu's child). The only original pilots remaining at that time of that shot are Komoda, Ushiro, Yoshikawa, and Anko (who dies in this ep. of course). That makes up the total of 14 starters. Kana and Machi have to naturally be left out of this.

Since the adults came late I can only assume that they are the missing 2 lights. So either the adults didn't get lights of their own (i.e. some loophole in the rules), Dung Beetle has the ability to bypass rules as he sees fit, or the animators made a big error.

You're right, that makes sense. I got so much on my mind, I already forgot about that -_- .

I noticed the number matches the original pilots. Still I though more lights would have "been born" once they joined the contract. And let's say the original pilots all die leaving the others. Would Zearth fight with no lights on?

I somehow can't think the animators made a mistake, coz that shot seemed premeditated. Hm... Well, maybe we'll get some answers in the next episodes.

Don't know if 1.) someone noticed that too and 2.) if there's a meaning behind it, but:
The masterminds in the vision of Yoshikawa are 15 people altogether (incl. child). Same as the enemys....But maybe it's just a coincidence...(?)

God i love Dung Beetle so much.

"Ah, how boring! I thought Tokosumi would at least break down crying and screaming with her nose dripping!"

I'm hoping to find more about the masterminds in the coming episodes. Not sure what they did/do.

I also doubt that it was an animation mistake but I tried to think of all possibilities. We still have 2 deaths to go before the adults get their chance so answers should come soon I hope.

Good catch. The camera kept zooming on the old guy sitting in the chair so I never took the time to really notice everyone else. It looks like they're all gathered around to take a photo but that would be strange since 3 of them are obscured behind other people. The way things have been going I can't think those numbers are pure coincidence.

Dung Beetle has a big mouth and is too sadistic. I'm still hoping his overconfidence becomes his downfall and he gets screwed over somewhere down the line.

Awesome ep, as for the lights etc, i think the lights are that from the original contractees, which would ofcourse make sense.

The 2 adults came in later, and i dunno why they didnt get there own lights or whatever, but if im not mistaken they dont even have there own chairs in the zearth, so yeah...

I'm pretty sure that the lights are only the original ones contracted which would've been correct at four and now at three. Dung Beetle is such an asshole but I like him anyway because of that "Oh, I missed" best way to end that episode.

Theres 16 people in the masterminds scene. The last guy in the back in being hidden by the guy in the front. If you watch it again you will notice the person in the backs hair. Then the second show only shows 14 people since its a close up.

Now the part where it seems like Yoshikawa's vision is being rushed off into outer space may prove to be a valuable clue.

Wasn't Anko's dad blackmailed into his affair? That would chime with what Tamotsu said about power and responsibility.

^No, I really doubt that.
It's just lust; it's one of the seven sins, and one of the most common, especially for people with money, a high standing/rank, and influence. If the girl was asked to do this, yea, it's possible, but it's not actual black mail.

"I thought Tokosumi would at least break down crying and screaming with her nose dripping!"
I expected this too, we still think too much alike, Dung Beetle.

"Die, you little bitch"
*chair spins* My thoughts: "Fake, next won't be him. Dung Beetle will just act it off with his usual epic grin."
Chair chosen is the girl's.
"Oh, I missed."
Get out of my head Dung Beetle, it feels like you've been stalking my thoughts since the start of the series.

Great episode, and we'll see how this continues. It was a nice surprise to see her fight though, good twist.

...although I really expected her to see her freak out, which was re-enforced by the paparazzi scenario; I kind of doubted it when she was with the guy, I guess, should have expected it more, heh.

I'm a little disappointed Dung Beetle revealed the order, I always liked wondering who would be next. And it looks like Dung Beetle is the one choosing the order, not Zearth...

This fight was my favorite, I really liked the other robot's design. Anko's death was sad. I'm gonna miss her.

And I can't believe there's only 3 contracted kids left. Everyone is always in a big group, so it felt bigger. But damn, my other favorite character is getting chosen next. No more Noto Mamiko voice ;_;

This series keeps getting better and better. I wonder what actually happens after the 15 battles are over. And what did Kanji's vision mean...

Awesome revelations, interesting to see that yes, Dung Beetle is the one deciding the order (and apparently can't change it once he's set it in motion). I didn't expect to see a glimpse of 'the Masterminds' this early, and I'm surprised to see they look as human as the rest. And yes, there's 15 of them as well (or thereabouts). I guess the one in the center is either 'God' or someone powerful enough there's little difference.

And then he immediately used that knowledge to piss Dung Beetle off, LOL. Though he's so freaking ALIEN, it's hard to tell if he was even really angry, or just wanted to fuck with Kanji a little more (saying he was next even when he knew he wasn't going to be able to change the order). I wonder, what would happen if one of the pilots pissed off Dung Beetle (or their version of him, on an alternate Earth) enough that he killed one of them? Other than the Beetle being severely punished for fucking up the elegance of this sadistic little game ...

I gotta know how this ends, I have a feeling it's not going for a total downer ending because they keep peeking shards of hope at us. Can't help but hope there's a chance that Kanji decides to throw a monkey wrench into the system with his 'final job' ... which I'm guessing is probably playing the Kokopelli to a new set of pilots.

4/5. Good episode. The government is definitely going all out to discredit anyone who attempts to reveal the information in the Zearth Report.

Earlier in the series, was the sister the person Dung Beetle was talking to?

I liked the mother/daughter scene with Ushiro. Such a complex situation.

Yoshikawa is awesome. Good to finally see something get under Dung Beetle's skin a little bit.

The sadism is what makes him so great, though. His bizarre character design coupled with his sadistic personality causes him to cross the line twice, making him go from being offensive/unappealing, to hilarious/entertaining.

All of the battles up to this point were easy wins, IMO. One of the enemy robots even killed itself, eliminating any potential challenge it could have posed.

I seriously hate the probable fact that Anko's father was forgiven (as well as Kirie's father). I know this is a whole different culture but seriously, they're in the middle of a very fucked up situation, his daugther could die at any moment and he goes and hooks up with another woman - which, actually, I wasn't that surprised that he did it, because earlier when his wife hugged him he seemed quite displeased. As for the model, I think she was just a tool (from the government or the other criminal organization maybe) and probably was just in to make Takasumi fires himself and stop the program. Probably doing it for the money.

I don't remember any of the early episodes saying anything about Kanji and Anko's relationship... It just seems like they threw it there for this one episode (like what happened with Kako and Chizu, though in the 1st episode Kako was looking at Chizu at the beach but that was it), just for the sake of this episode, you know?
Also she could have jumped behind her enemy. It wouldn't have enough time to turn (ps the enemy reminds me of TV, because of the ''cables").

Anyway, Kanji's "revelation" scene promises a lot. Still, I don't think those people are the creators of this game... Then again, nothing else about this entity has been shown. Also, the fact that he hugged Anko and was imediately "transported" somewhere else might mean that every character that dies see the same people or go to the place they are... It would be interesting like this too.

And like some people had previously said, Dung Beetle's the one that chooses the order of pilots. He also hinted at how he can choose them at his will.

Loved this episodes ending tho and Idk guy’s name who saw the masterminds in his vision but I love this plot thickening. I enjoy that this show knows how to play up its mystery and psychological themes while progressing its story I’m legitimately invested in its lore and happy and prepared to see how this masterpiece ends

well, that fight clearly shows how much of an emphasis there is on the actual characters rather than the whole robot vs. robot combat... lowkey disappointed in anko's fight, of all fights. i've been knew that there's not a lot being put into the battle scenes, but goddamn. keep going forward? okay

i expected from the opening that anko was going to have an epic, psycho rampage meltdown. you know, like blonde goes crazy. and it was just calm throughout... so yeah...

i am impressed though, by how consistent this anime is in making do with the small window of time for each character. abundant sympathy every time. there hasn't been a single cha- i take that back. don't think i ever gave two shits about kako lol. probably was the most ordinary pent-up loser of the bunch

One of the laziest attempts at forcing romantic undercurrents into an anime that I've ever seen. I'm disappointed. The anime was much more nuanced and deliberate with its handling of the pilot's relationships before this episode.
