Synopsis

Nine years ago, the Empire of Giad declared war on all neighboring countries using an army of autonomous drones known as the Legion. Threatened by the soulless killing machines, the Republic of San Magnolia, home to the silver-haired Alba race, evacuated its citizens inside 85 districts and developed supposedly unmanned drones known as Juggernauts to counter the Legion. Even after years of war, the Republic boasts that they have suffered zero casualties. However, the battlefield bathed in crimson recites a different melody.

The hand dealt to the Colorata people—a minority forced into living in the "nonexistent" 86th district—is one of utter contempt and scorn. Looked upon as human filth, they are ordered to pilot the Juggernauts as Processors under the command of Republican Handlers.

Vladilena Milizé, a republican soldier with a strong sense of justice, detests the way her countrymen treat the 86. When she is assigned to the Spearhead Squadron as their handler, she meets a group of oddballs and eventually grows attached to them—particularly their captain, Shinei Nouzen, a boy with a pure sense of purpose and resolve. However, the path they walk is one riddled with death, and growing close to an 86 may have just set Vladilena down a path of despair.

Background

86 won the Grand Prize at the 23rd Dengeki Novel Awards in 2016. The light novel ranked second and fifth in the 2018 and 2019 Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! in the Light Novel category, respectively.

The series has been published in English as 86: Eighty-Six by Yen Press under the Yen On imprint since March 26, 2019. It has also been released in Italian by Dokusho Edizioni since April 2, 2024.

86 was my first Light Novel ever and it definitely did not disappoint. This might be one of the greatest storytelling of modern day society in an extremist type of way. Asato Asato does an incredible job of portraying the world of 86 in a parallel to our world, in a way that could be a distant future and very real if you actually compare the society of 86 and ours.

These light novels are amazing and the anime did a great job of sticking to its material! After watching 86 I had to know what was next and bought volumes 1-6 and I LOVE them!! The story is truly a masterpiece. I love the characters, the action and a little romance here and there.

If anyone finished the anime but wants more, read the LN. Not only do they continue the story but they give some more information and more in depth explanations so you notice things that you missed when watching the anime! It's also a great way to support the project so if you ...

86 is an incredible anime that everyone should watch. Its direction is superb, mixing light-hearted banter with sudden heart-wrenching deaths and dramatic changes in tone, is beautifully animated, and has a gripping and emotional soundtrack. If you fell in love with the anime like myself, you may have learned that there’s MORE to this beautiful story and need to know what happens next.

Now, please feel free to criticize my review because of my limited scope on the full scale of the series because I’ve only listened up to volume 3. However, the anime does it better.
