Synopsis

In the distant future, humanity has been driven to near-extinction by giant beasts known as Klaxosaurs, forcing the surviving humans to take refuge in massive fortress cities called Plantations. Children raised here are trained to pilot giant mechas known as FranXX—the only weapons known to be effective against the Klaxosaurs—in boy-girl pairs. Bred for the sole purpose of piloting these machines, these children know nothing of the outside world and are only able to prove their existence by defending their race.

Hiro, an aspiring FranXX pilot, has lost his motivation and self-confidence after failing an aptitude test. Skipping out on his class' graduation ceremony, Hiro retreats to a forest lake, where he encounters a mysterious girl with two horns growing out of her head. She introduces herself by her codename Zero Two, which is known to belong to an infamous FranXX pilot known as the "Partner Killer." Before Hiro can digest the encounter, the Plantation is rocked by a sudden Klaxosaur attack. Zero Two engages the creature in her FranXX, but it is heavily damaged in the skirmish and crashes near Hiro. Finding her partner dead, Zero Two invites Hiro to pilot the mecha with her, and the duo easily defeats the Klaxosaur in the ensuing fight. With a new partner by his side, Hiro has been given a chance at redemption for his past failures, but at what cost?

For every manga volume, the shipping took 20 days to reach my beautiful country. But it was worth the wait. If you finished watching its anime years ago, reading the manga again is more than enough to bring back those same feelings.

While reading some chapters, you might be a bit surprised to see the differences from the anime. But the emotions are generally the same.
Backstories are revealed in the manga some time after the events unfold, and until those chapters, we don't get much information. But as you progress, all the questions in your mind find their answers.

Mixed Feelings
This is the manga adaptation of the famous original anime by Trigger. The anime is very different. For one, the manga is considerably rushed compared to the anime to the point that it skips as much as it adapts. It’s missing so much, that in and of itself it’s just not a very good manga. The character arcs are completely underdeveloped, the plot is overly simplistic but still full of holes, and the core themes are completely superficial. Look, I watched the Darling in the Franxx anime and recently finished reading the manga, and my honest opinion is… IT'S NOT WORTH IT. The story is good, but poorly executed. The characters and their traits are unique, but very underdeveloped. In the anime, Kokoro gets pregnant, but in the manga, the author simply forgets about that, making it seem like he was just in it for the money, constantly throwing in ABSURD fan service, sexualizing ROBOTS… Gross.

On top of that, the ending was extremely rushed, with a ridiculous conclusion that gives the impression the author just wanted to wrap it up quickly to ...
