The Omegaverse is usually considered a subgenre of BL, though it can also appear in straight or GL stories. In this universe, people have not only a gender but also a secondary one — alpha, beta, or omega — each with unique traits and instincts. Betas are basically ordinary humans, while alphas are often portrayed as strong, dominant, and admired, and omegas as rare, emotional, and able to conceive regardless of sex. Omegaverse stories are characterized by portraying a society built around the hierarchy of a secondary genre of humans which can be innate or developed in later years according to the author.
