Synopsis

Poverty-stricken Shim Chong will do anything to support herself and her blind father, going so far as to steal money from innocent strangers. Meanwhile, the future bride of the local minister lives in luxury, her every need taken care of so long as she remains an obedient wife.

When an unfortunate accident leads to their fateful encounter, the pair who have nothing in common find themselves sharing the same wish—to leave their undesirable lives behind and die at the hands of fate.

Loosely based on a Korean folktale of the same name, Her Tale of Shim Chong follows two girls from different walks of life as they learn to accept themselves for who they are in a world where women are seen as less than equal.

Her Tale of Shim Chong is originally a webtoon series which was officially published in book format by Wisdom House (위즈덤하우스) from August 24, 2018 to June 11, 2020. The series was published digitally in English by Tappytoon, Pocket Comics, Tapas Media and Webtoon Entertainment, in French by Delitoon, and in Thai by Lezhin Entertainment and Boomtoon. It has been published digitally in English by Manta and in German by Delitoon.

My view is bound to be influenced by my nature as an homosexual woman.

With that out of the way, the story is made of elements expected in a love story. Including all the emotional baggage, speaking of real connections and struggles in life. And the way it is narrated doesn't make the reading tiring, keeping mostly short chapters while grasping attention.

The misticism and ficction are nicely entagled, not apparently being the main focus, but rather something used in favor of the narrative. It affects the story giving their problems something to circle around.

The art is satisfying and comfortable. Also coherent with the characters' ...

This is quite the story! Even though I have mixed feelings about this story, it's still a good manhwa to read. That is because the story has some crazy plot twists. Towards the end the reader is going to be thrown unto the ocean quite literally. To those who love a romance with spicy twists this is the manwha for you. It also is related to some historical events.

Do you like feeling happy? If so, don’t read this manhwa. Do you like violence, killing, people who don’t talk to each other and get angry about nothing, sexual assault, and just a whole bunch of stuff that makes people generally want to kill themselves (which everyone discussed and thought about a TON of times through this, it’s like there would be more happiness if everyone died halfway through the story) in your yuri manga?
