As of writing this I've read the first novel and am onto the second (I bought a three-volume omnibus, very nice quality from B&N) and it's wonderful. Incredible world that Hideyuki has created, and manages to write in a way where the reader feels "in the know" without excessive exposee or time-wasting loredumps. The story itself is a bit predictable in the way old westerns are, but the unique setting/history gives old tropes new life. Atmospheric, well-paced, and inspiring stylistically to me as a writer. Evokes images as vivid as though you were watching the movie. Highly recommend to anyone else who loves vampires, sci-fi, ... cohesive fictional worlds, and has been known to save a horse, IYKWIM.

Before anything else, this is a review of the first novel only, not the entire series. So I can't judge the rest.
If there was any novel that really should have been a graphic novel, it is this one. It wants to be a graphic novel so badly that it seems to abandon the idea that it is a novel at all and lingers somewhere in between the two. The narrator desperately wants us to understand how amazing D is. Instead of letting D's perfection be revealed to us, it is forced upon us. He does ... this by describing the immense speed with which every offense is executed. Because D is so fast in his attacks, the reader must endure a sort of novel replay where the writer has to back track and describe, in slow motion, what just happened that was too fast for the reader to even recognize. It is aggravating to say the least.
The story itself I have never been a fan of even in film form. It isn't compelling to me to read about a girl who is willing to trade sex for just about anything it seems. Already she is a weak character when we first meet her. She only gets weaker. Perhaps I should give the third novel a try since, as the basis for Bloodlust, it is more intriguing.
If you are a fan of Yoshitaka Amano, like I am, check out Coffin: the Art of Vampire Hunter D. Through this you can relish the illustrations without having to read the books.

At some point it felt more like law and orden type nove that a story
basically, the continuity don't exist, as a story/part arc is over you can forget about the characters, places and vampire you knew there, the next part is a week later? a year? 10 years? who knows? the protagonist is immortal so very well could be a century.
the formula is the same, Some vampire in some place, the people act suspicious, a girl is implied or described as sexually abused (not even for the vampire that is supposed to be the villain) , D comes to town and everyone is in awe ... with his beauty (like seriously, multiple times along the arc they are going to describe how even man are attracted to him), he meets the girl, she's obviously in love with him even if he only meet him that morning, but D doesn't care, he's too cool to care in general, about almost everything, some human antagonist, some vampire antagonist, oh no the people form town are evil, dead, D is so strong that he's not even trying, dead and D leaves town
i was expecting to along the series have little information about D, where does he come grom, his hand, anything, the series only gives you the idea, but it doesn't tell you anything, i feel like i would watch the animated version of this but not read it.
