Synopsis

Fourth grader Ayumu Fujino regularly draws four-panel manga for her school newspaper and is lauded as having the best artwork in her class. One day, she is asked by her teacher to turn over one of her manga slots in the school newspaper to a truant student named Kyoumoto. When Kyoumoto's manga pops up alongside Fujino's, it receives high praise for its detailed artwork, making Fujino furiously jealous.

Refusing to be beaten by someone who barely attends school, Fujino devotes herself to learning to create manga. As time goes on though, her goal of outshining Kyoumoto seems to only get further and further away; and Fujino, now in sixth grade, eventually gives up and quits making manga.

Graduation day arrives, and Fujino is asked to deliver Kyoumoto's graduation certificate to her. Through chance, the two end up coming face to face, and their unexpected meeting will end up having consequences far beyond what either of them could ever predict.

Background

Look Back ranked first in the 2022 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Male Readers division. It was also nominated for the 15th Manga Taisho Award and placed second in the final ranking.

The one-shot was published digitally as an English simulpub through MANGA Plus. The volume was published in English by VIZ Media under the VIZ Signature imprint on September 20, 2022. The manga was also released in Polish by Waneko on August 24, 2022, and in Portuguese by Editora Devir on September 9, 2024.

What a ride.

Regret is a theme that's always hit hard for me. That feeling of wishing you said those words or spent more time with the people you cared about before it was too late. The realization that any resentment and pettiness you had towards them was fucking stupid in the grand scheme of things.

Fujimoto expresses that idea through the endearing relationship between the story's two leads and the sobering inspiration from real-life experiences and events. Tying it all together with creative paneling and a polished flow.

It's short and bittersweet. Amusing and depressing. Contemplative.

I enjoyed it a lot and definitely recommend it.

Don't "Look Back" in anger.

Look Back was a satisfactory one shot about two characters striving for purpose and self improvement.

At first the plot showed similarities to that of Bakuman, as it had two friends working hard creating the best manga they could make, however throughout the story the narrative became quite ambiguous.

The development of both characters was okay but it felt unnecessary to add in the alternate possibilities as it made it confusing to follow what was actually happening.

this is the first manga i've read by fugimoto (on the recommendation of a friend), and this manga seemed extremely rushed to me, either because of the relationship of the characters and the ending seemed to lack ideas so anything will do, can it happen that some crazy person invades a college and wants to kill the people inside? yes, it can, this unfortunately happens in our reality, but for me this in a story in an abrupt way was the last nail in the coffin that made me hate this manga.
