The two works have a similar premise, with a foreign presence of some kind threatening humanity; It explores a lot of the same concepts like times of crisis making the forsaking of one's morality for the sake of one's safety the norm. It also has a very similar tone: a dark gruesome vibe that manages to have significant periods and moments of levity without detracting from it's darker, more serious themes. 

Tokyo ghoul has a similar premise to Astro baby, but all the dark, gruesome, psychological horror elements are turned up to 11.
