Koisuru Lip Tint is your standad shoujo manga. Classic artstyle, characters and overall plot to it
One thing i can say about shoujo as a genre is that it is actually pretty good, the problem lies with the originality of the mangakas and the uniqueness of what they try to illustrate and depict in a story. This was a common problem with the late 90's till late 2000's shoujo mangas being they lacked original story plot or characters. Overly insensitive Male Leads for seemingly no reason other than to appear cool(and somehow working), sensitive or straight up stupid Female Characters, lazy writing that tried to incorperate
...
every little misunderstanding and/or cliche that they can find in the genre. You get it, the usual copy and paste mangas. I thought we were past that, with the 2010's ushering in seemingly better stories written by more enlightened and open-minded mangakas, and it is like that. I'd mention one like Slow Jet Coaster, despite its short tenure, it still left a mark, and a good one at that. The thing is, there aren't many that whilst follow a generic plot of a shoujo manga, redeem themselves with good characters or art. In the last 13 or so years, the mangas coming out began to bleed creativity and actual innovative plots or profound characters, all to bridge the gap that seinen romance actually does best.
In this manga, everything it does is generic. Down from the story, characters and even the art(i like the default shoujo art so i'm not complaining), basically it's trite to a tee. My main concerns or i'd say issues would be the point of how Harumi, the Male lead is not being understood or even tried to by the Female lead. In the chapter, Harumi is being pestered by some girls tailing him whilst he shows 0 concern or interest in them; he doesn't care nor listens to their murmurs and annoyances. Ako(Female lead), instead formularizes that he's a rude prick and decides to step in while knowing and even actively hearing that he doesn't like women. She tells him he's being rude and should at least talk to them, he decides to humor her and turns to the girls only the greet them and tell them to never approach him again, and somehow, he's at fault because he didn't sugarcoat his words to accomodate their feelings. Mind you he's seen as a literal greek god and all the girls do is try get closer to him, even kind words would only encourage them since he wouldn't seem like someone to turn them down and in the first place, he did adourn a more serious almost rude tone, but didn't insult them like your typical shoujo hot boy would, so that's a plus in my book.
Another thing is still within the 1st chapter where towards the end, she help him by scaring away stalkers peeking taking photos of him from a corner. He then asks her the reason to help him, she answers that she feels apologetic to him for intruding in their previous interaction and dictating the ones in the right or wrong without any prior idea on what exactly went down. This is a green flag and it's good she was able to recognise her wrongdoings.
Now, i'll keep chapter 2 very brief. Ako, now reconcilde with Harumi, begins to think they're now friends and gets a little hurt that he didn't greet her when he passed her class earlier. They meet again in the hallway and tries returning his dirtied gym shirt and drags him away, leading to the hordes of girls passing by trying to catch wind of her sudden act. They try hiding in a class behind the door, trying to keep still, to keep her from making any sudden noise, he places his hands on her face and whispers gently to keep quiet. I was thinking to myself, "he has to be doing this on purpose cause there's no way he would be a little intimate with another girl knowing all of whom approach him have other nepherious motives just by glancing at his face, he couldn't be this daft, he couldn't be unaware of his appearance and what it does to women like it clearly showed, right?" but of course he wasn't aware that the actions of an extremely attractive man would lead to a young woman's heart to flutter, as he is that unaware...It just struck me as common garbage cliche that is a staple in every other shoujo manga. It's like they don't even try to distinguish itself from the other slop that overrides shoujo as a whole.
Again i get shoujo is obviously meant for young women or teenage girls, but i know many guys like me who read shoujo just the same way women read shounen manga. This is all my own opinion and i understand majority of you wouldn't agree with me, but it just rubbed me the wrong way the way it was a copy and paste of the usual shoujo mangas. I didn't read past chapter 2 for your information and it was enough to dictate its value in my eyes and the direction it would be heading. It could get better, that's always a possibility, but right now for me, i absolutely dreaded this Shoujo and was honestly dozing off just trying to finish chapter 2. Try it yourself and decide whether or not its something worth your time.
