Face to face with the person who tortured you for a decade - could you maintain your cover?
The most powerful family in the East, one of the two most powerful families in the world: the Excel seem to have it all, even a real loving family! Once blessed by a dragon, the family's descendants are all extremely powerful swordsmen and have black hair! But one day, the mother, beloved by the father, gives birth to a child with brown hair....
At the beginning of ‘The Duke's Family Is Not My Problem’ we are told, more or less, that. Combined with a set-up that is 1:1 like
...
the often very cheesy “noble family loves X even though she's not perfect”, I was expecting a story exactly like this: Perrie is found again (or something) and the bastard who did all this to her is beaten up.
Instead, we get a secret agent story. WTF - this was the biggest surprise I've seen in years. Perrie is the adopted daughter of the Holy Queen, regent of a small kingdom threatened by the empires of this world. At the beginning of the manhwa, she has to infiltrate her (biological) parental home in order to prevent an alliance between the empires: Someone is pretending to be her and trying to unite the empires through a marriage!
To be honest, I have to say that I didn't like the surprise. I started the manhwa because I wanted to see cheesy family dynamics and instead of the manhwa focussing on the secret agent theme and mystery and constantly revealing things or introducing new missions that Perrie has to complete in order to save her adoptive mother, it creates a really strange dynamic where it feels like the manhwa is up in the air the whole time. It seems like at any moment it will be revealed to her brothers who Perrie really is, but instead the story constantly continues to titillate the reader: yes something will be revealed at any moment, her brothers are about to know, one more page, come on, you want to know....
Not only does this make the manhwa frustrating, but the potentially exciting secret agent story falls flat.
While the manhwa can get really frustrating at some points and couldn't catch me at all, i still finished all available chapters because the idea is so unique, that i just couldn't stop hoping that the story would finally become good. Instead it ends on a big cliff hanger and seems to be on pause.
So all in all i would rank it with 5 out of 10 potato points. I think that the idea espacially has potential and makes it kinda interesting to read, while the rest is so frustrating i was constantly considering to just drop it. I will at least not return for a loooong time - if you read this and it got better, feel free to inform me, i will take another look XD.
