Synopsis

After a powerful earthquake nearly destroyed all of Tokyo, a prison known as Deadman Wonderland rose from what was left of the city. Privately-run through the guise and functions of a theme park, Deadman Wonderland takes in prisoners from all over Japan, using them as attractions for tourists. Little do the public know about the true purpose of this "theme park" and the horrors that take place within.

Enter Ganta Igarashi, a middle school student who has lived a normal life since the great earthquake occurred. This all changes when a mysterious masked murderer called the Red Man appears and kills his entire class, knocking him unconscious which consequently left him as the sole survivor. When he awakens, he is falsely convicted as the perpetrator behind the massacre, landing him a spot in Deadman Wonderland. What will become of this new inmate whose life depends on the bizarre "games" that this prison holds? And just what does Shiro, Ganta's supposed childhood friend who awaits his arrival, know about the Red Man?

Deadman Wonderland was put on hiatus from March 26, 2012 (2012-05) to January 26, 2013 (2013-03). During this period, mangaka Kataoka Jinsei gave birth to and raised her baby boy.

The series was first published in English by Tokyopop with 5 volumes released from February 2, 2010 to June 22, 2011 before publication was discontinued. VIZ Media republished the series to completion from February 11, 2014 to February 9, 2016. It was also published in Italian by Panini Comics under the Planet Manga imprint from January 24, 2010 to February 15, 2014; in Polish by Waneko from June 2014 to June 2016; and in Indonesian by Level Comics.

Deadman Wonderland stands out for its unique premise and captivating narrative. The story is set in a futuristic prison filled with colorful and complex characters, allowing for a wide range of interactions and conflicts within a confined yet surprisingly versatile setting.

Although the concept of “deadly games” may seem cliché today, it was innovative and refreshing at the time. The series adds an original twist through intense battles between prisoners who can control their own blood, known as Deadmen, adding tension, strategy, and excitement to every confrontation.

Mixed Feelings

Teenaged angst in full form. Deadman Wonderland is a manga fueled through its unashamed edge and absurd premise. I personally really like its ideas however its flaws really contribute to it being just an ok series overall.

Story:
The basic plot is the most interesting thing about Deadman Wonderland. It stars Ganta, a 14 year old boy, getting sent off to a fantastically grim prison/theme park where all prisoners must compete in sadistic games and combat to stay alive. Along the way, Ganta meets friends, gains a superpower, uncovers the secrets of the prison, and plots to get revenge on the mysterious "Red Man" who is responsible ...

This corny manga can be summarised by the phrase "cliches after cliches". My review doesn't have any big, important spoilers.

Characters:
1) Bland, swallow characters with swallow character developments which are easy to predict ("he is nice, I will be nice too" kind of development in the case of Minatsuki).
2) Non-serious, hyperbolic, comically evil villains (Hagire Rinichiro and Tsunenaga Tamaki). Tamaki only turned evil because the earthquake (caused by the Red Man aka the Wretched Egg who is the third and the main villain) destroyed his PC which he used to play games (he didn't care about his mom being damaged and dying at that moment).
3) The ... most common complaint people have about this manga is Ganta Igarashi (the main character ) being a whiny boy. But it only applies to the early part of story, he becomes less whiny in the second part (after dealing with undertakers). It doesn't make things any better, though.
4) The only good thing about characters of this manga is that female characters don't seem to be useless.

Plot:
1) Inconsistence and lack of explanation:
In the early part of manga it was pointed that usage of deadmen's blood is required for their attacks and that deadmen will die/lose consciousness if they lose too much blood. It's forgotten in the second part. This manga has a lot of "I should've died but managed to survive somehow" moments (so it's very predictable how next fights will end).
It hasn't been explained how the Red Man is able to levitate and how that chick from the special Ninben squad (the second part of manga) makes her enemies to experience hallucinations.
2) I did read manga starting at the point where the anime is ended. Anime depicts the early part of the manga and pretty soon shows who is the Wretched Egg. If this corresponds to manga, then there's no mystery, intrigue in this manga at all (except for how Ganta and the Wretched Egg will finally engage in fight with each other and how Ganta will discover the Wretched Egg's real identity).

Other stuff:
The art isn't bad. Fights are weak, especially in the early part (and, as I said before, it's predictable how fights will end).
There's reference to existentialism in the last chapter but it doesn't make the manga deep.

Conclusion: Very mediocre shonen manga. This is type of manga you read when you want something easy, simple and not serious, something that doesn't require thinking much. I believe, people mostly like the manga/anime because of Shiro (me included, as you can see by my profile and forum pics and signature).
Watch anime (which is never meant to be complete) only if you want to see fights and Shiro being animated. It also has a good opening.

Mirai Nikki (the Future Diary) has some similar aspects:
1) The whole idea of the game they play makes you think of carnival corpse you see in the Deadman Wonderland.
2) Both Yukiteru and Ganta are depicted as weak, short, whiny boys with only good intentions.
3) Yuno Gasai loves Yuki and Shiro loves Ganta; both are obsessed with them and want to defend them; both have a dark story behind them and have an alter-ego (this second personality plays the important role for Shiro only).
4) Both Mirai Nikki and Deadman Wonderland have crazy and at the same time dumb atmosphere/mood, edgy moments, some dark and sexual humour and don't require thinking.
