Synopsis

In the panic surrounding a worldwide pandemic which kills 15 percent of the population and cripples many more, a secret organization, the Propater, topples the UN and seizes control of much of the world. A boy and a girl, raised in an abandoned virology research center, immune to the virus, are attacked by the Propater and escape.

Twenty years later, the boy is the most powerful drug lord in South America. He aids his son from behind the scenes as he evades and eventually with the help of mercenaries from Nomad (some of them former Propater operatives) fights the Propater. As the plot develops focus shifts away from the main character and develops many sub-plots dedicated to terrorism, Human-improvement, the struggle of the developing countries and the power battles between the drug cartels and Propater.

Based strongly on Gnostic mythology, all major characters are named after gnostic deities, and have analogous roles.

The first 14 volumes of Eden: It's an Endless World! were published in English by Dark Horse from November 2, 2005, to April 23, 2014, before the manga was dropped. It was also released in Brazilian Portuguese by Editora JBC in 2-in-1 omnibus volumes from July 2015 to November 2016; and in Polish by Egmont from 2002 to 2009.

Eden is easily one of the most influential cyberpunk sci-fi mangas of all time. If you enjoy sci-fi, realistic depictions of futuristic technology and even pondering about religion and ethics, I think this manga will be right up your alley. Worth mentioning, Endo's ideas and feelings in this manga are very influenced by Evangelion.
Starting serialisation during 1997, Eden takes place in the near future, during a time where a virus has crippled and killed most of humanity. Endo makes sure to give us a slow boil introduction to the world by following the Ballard family line, starting with the Grandfather, all the way to the ... youngest son. We are able to see the evolution of the world's status through the years thanks to this approach, which makes the reading experience feel much more natural (compared to a very common loredump approach a lot of mangakas use). If you somehow aren't gripped by the ruthless introduction that are the couple first volumes, the manga only gets better, as we follow the story of the youngest male child of the Ballard family.

The character writing is, imho, immaculate. Sure we have Endo's characteristic ero humour present all throughout (I've seen a review complaining about that), but every single important character has a story behind, and what is most impressive, all their interactions and relationships tell us more about them. This is especially noticeable at the beginning during Elijah's stay in Khan's merc corps. From prostitution, child soldiers, orphans, to professional mercenaries, genetically engineered soldiers and AI killing machines, this manga has the widest array of characterisation I've ever seen. This is all tied together by our protagonist, that while being admittedly very stupid and childish, undergoes a forceful coming of age due to the fucked up situation the world is in. Thus, the manga overall feels very adult in how it deals with relationships, which is a huge breath of fresh air in the stale genre that mainstream manga has become. Intricate trauma bonding, morally questionable situationships, emotional baggage and a lot of foreshadowing. I'd like to get into some of the details, but I'd rather not spoil you.

As for the world building, its intricate, and quite easy to get lost in. Multiple organisations, individuals and groups with different objectives all mess with each other as the plot unfolds. Imo, this is a clear indicator of good writing, as coming up with all these factions that collaborate out of convenience, turn on eachother, fight over common objectives and being able to convey it in a way that felt so realistic and organic is incredible. The ending is also quite fitting to the overall message of the story, I loved it.

While the art is very good, (Endo is so good at anatomy, and I'm a sucker for his raw depiction of violence), it lacks background work, which is a big shame because fully white backgrounds are abundant (though not too horrible). Im unsure if this is due to a small assistant team or lack of time, as I believe Afternoon is monthly. This is my only big complaint.

This is overall one of the best manga I've read, and definitely one of the most unique. I love Endo, and the themes he chose to approach even so many years ago speaks to how much of a visionary this guy is. I could spend hours showing how interesting the foreshadowing and character building is, or try to analyse the unending references to gnostic religion and discourse, but I think that's beyond the point of a review. Most definitely, this is a very intricate work of art. Go read it.

The first chapter is one of the best first chapters I've ever read. It intrigued me so much that it kept me reading this... thing... all the way through.

Although the first chapter was a banger, Elijah Ballard was not. Elijah is so damn annoying and uninteresting that it ruins the experience. He has so much screen time—like 10 volumes of protagonism—and in those 10 volumes, almost NOTHING really happened. I'm only counting scenes involving Elijah; obviously, the story still develops with Propatria, Maya and the colloid, but at a really slow pace because we really need to show how a 15 year old kid and ...
