this starts off good, but as it goes on it progressively becomes more of a chore to read, especially when it becomes a apocalyptic story towards the end with all types of wacky stuff happening. the weird shit starts happening so often and escalating to ridiculous levels that you stop caring and are just like "mhm okay whatever." the strengths are definitely in the earlier chapters when the horror is more small scale and creepy. the final chapter does pack a nice punch though.

given that Tomie is an anthology series with hardly any overarching narrative (other than Tomie being a sinister gremlin >:3) it's bound to be a mixed bag. while there are some interesting stories, the rest are meh ones. of course, given that it's Junji Ito, the art tends to be great even if the stories are subpar or repetitive at times.
Tomie herself is a fairly interesting character with a captivating appearance, as well as an interesting biology and M.O. it's interesting to compare her to subsequent J-horror icons, as Tomie was pretty much the first girl horror antagonist in modern Japanese media, followed by ... |
