Skull Man

The original mangas for both The Skull Man and Cyborg 009 were created by Shotaro Ishinomori. Joe Shimamura/Cyborg 009 even makes a camero appearence in the Skull Man manga to debate evil with him (since they are the hero and anti-hero interpratations of the same idea at heart). The Skull man is considered a pseudo prequel of Cyborg 009.

Both these shows are slow maticulous epics who focus on a large cast of characters from all angles without having to resort to predicably stale plot twists to grab the viewers attention. These are definitely more adult shows intellectually. The themes involved are drastically different but very much compatible, if you like Legend of the Galactic Heroes for its pace and storytelling rather than it's sci-fi you should be able to enjoy Monster's steady psychological development. Kenzou Tenma and Johan Liebert leave just as much impact as Yang Wenli and Reinhard von Lohengramm.

Heroic Age

Both by the same studio and feature an opening theme by Angela. Both are shows featuring a combination of mechas and creatures. Both are on the losing end of a war with futuristic technology. Fafner is the more serious of the two with a much sadder storyline although you can emphathise with Age more in Heroic Age.

Both feature similar ideologies and long journeys to find a person who wronged the protagonist but without a clear motive for revenge. Both fight countless enemies with little mercy and grow stronger slowly over said fights, much unlike shows where characters jump in strength. Both feature strong quiet main characters and likable antagonists who started as the protagonists best friend.
