10 - Tells a beautiful story with unremitting brilliance.
9 - Tells a beautiful story despite notable cons.
8 - Tells a satisfying story with moments of great beauty.
7 - Tells a satisfying story, either with moments of great beauty balanced by notable cons, or with neither.
6 - Tells a satisfying story despite notable cons.
5 - Tells an incomplete or unsatisfying story despite notable pros.
4 - Tells an incomplete or unsatisfying story despite at least one glimmer of something interesting.
3 - Tells a story that I just didn't care about at any point.
2 - To my recollection it doesn't even have a story.
1 - This scathingest rating is reserved for those anime that take something wonderful and actively sully it. May they haunt the annals of my anime list in ignominy.

I usually rate just the first entry in a franchise and let that rating stand for the whole franchise, except when subsequent entries differ enough to warrant separate ratings.
