Both are wonderfully animated children's movies featuring witchcraft with a European inspired setting. They share a similar artistic style which makes sense given the similar premises and given Studio Ponoc's origins as a spin-off of Studio Ghibli. Both the protagonists experience great character growth over the course of the films and have the traits of adventurousness, curiosity, and being strong-willed. Both of these films are instant classics and must-watches for any fan of magical girls or young female protagonists.

Both have almost exclusive female casts. Schoolgirls performing fairly realistic military battles featuring real ships and tanks. Both lighthearted on the surface but with some more serious tones at times.

Slow paced shows that take place in rural Japan. Both are considered Iyashikei or "healing" anime. Very soothing to watch. No real plot, just showcasing a slow paced, simple, rural life in Japan.
