What happens when your Dr. Frankenstein-style mad scientist type makes himself a girlfriend? And he does so only because he thinks it’ll make him more efficient in his research? Yeah, some frustrating-ass rom-sci-fi shit. Let’s get into it.
*Won't get into major spoilers until towards the end of this review, and even then I kinda just dance around things aside from one major point. I will throw in another warning like this one before it, in case you're trying to avoid spoilers.*
First off, I like the characters. They’re well-designed, fit nicely into the story, and are given life by powerhouse voice actors who do an amazing
...
job here. Few things though. The side character students who are MC’s friends: there are plenty of times where they have completely unrealistic reactions to the scenario of the scene they’re in. MC is unconscious in his lab? When he comes to, let’s get annoyed and ask him why he spaced out! Let’s also try to smack him while we do it. Wait, how did we even get here? Do we have clearance to his lab? How did we even know where he lived, or that he was in potential peril right at this instant?
Also the MC is a complete insufferable unfeeling NEET dickass for the first half of the movie. It isn’t until he has a certain revelation (which is ham-fisted and comes out of nowhere) that he starts to see that he was wrong with how he treats No.0.
The pacing is not good. A scene will happen, and then it feels like the next scene is completely unrelated or missing some sort of info. Or it feels rushed in the sense that a lot of things have progressed in an unreasonably short period of time. Stuff like that.
The animation is CGI and not terrible. It looks rough at times, especially during the chill slice of life scenes. But the action scenes are done quite well. Especially, there’s a certain hand-stabbing scene at the climax that was gruesome and AWESOME. But yeah, overall visuals are ok. Distracting at times, but you get used to it as the movie goes on.
*SPOILERS BELOW HERE*
Meat and potatoes time. The ending leaves a lot more questions than it gives answers. The villain is the villain because…they needed a good plot twist? It literally makes no sense why the villain is the villain and why they go about executing their villain-ing in the way they do. And the ending revelation about who No.0 really is…is weird as fuck? It also doesn’t make any sense. The MC created a girl to be his girlfriend, but it just turned out to be his mom? And he’s like totally ok with it?? Happy even? The movie even hints earlier about his mom being “a monster,” and then in no way explains or shows how she could be monstrous. She’s painted in a very positive light throughout the movie, except for that one bit?
All in all I think this movie just didn’t know what it wanted to be, thematically or plot-wise. It plays out like a feel-good slice of life for the first chunk, then leans heavily into sci-fi and drama, then finishes as an action/thriller, all the while trying to be a romance throughout. And it fails as a romance. Mostly because of the MC’s initial actions and the ending. There are nice romance scenes here and there, and No.0 is a really likable love interest who you really want to root for as a viewer. But then she turns out to be implied as a reincarnation of his mother at the end? And he created her anyway, so isn’t he technically her father? It just becomes this weird incestuous mess that doesn’t have a truly satisfying resolution, because you’re left confused as to what their relationship even is supposed to be at the very end.
Sorry for the rambling. I really did enjoy watching this, but boy does it have issues.
TLDR; Enjoyed it, but it’s very confused and thus confusing. CGI is rough at times but I didn’t find it too detracting. Bleh MC, good main girl, romance gets kinda muddied at the end based on plot decisions.

If you're a fan of the harem genre, this one is a great one to get into. It's got fun characters, a touching story, doesn't take itself too seriously, and often lands with its self-aware humor. These are just some of my thoughts as the manga comes to a close.
I first got into The Cafe Terrace and Its Goddesses when S1 of the anime aired. I was a big fan of The Quintessential Quintuplets, and was optimistic that this would scratch the same itch. At the beginning, I was unsure. It seemed a bit tropey with a heavy reliance on gags, and the girls weren't
...
too likable, as they were acting a bit too unfairly and mean to Hayato, the protagonist. But the story and characters soon start to find their footing.
The characters and comedy are the best part of this manga. Let's start with the comedy. Kouji Seo is clearly knowledgable of the harem genre. He pokes fun at it plenty of times while also doing it better than a lot of others. The references and callbacks throughout are funny and don't get too worn out, and the jokes had me laughing quite a bit. The self-aware jokes are probably the best -- there's a character who knows all about the harem genre and its tropes (she's a writer), and she often makes comments on the situations the girls get into and even offers advice and support for what moves to make and whatnot.
The characters are pretty much all likable. I remember with QQ, I was absolutely completely against even the idea of certain girls winning, but with this group, I think any of them make a good case. Although one of them is a bit too much of a gag character, and many fans probably wouldn't consider her a real contender, she does have some nice moments with the MC. So even her winning wouldn't hit me with an uncontrollable Brooklyn rage (again, QQ).
There are certain arcs and points in the story that do feel weaker than others, which makes it feel like the overall story drags a bit at certain points. I was worried that Seo was going to pull a Rent-a-Girlfriend and drag this out forever and ever. But thankfully, that's not the case. A girl is selected, and it is done in a way that is satisfying.
I mean, it's not like this is Attack on Titan or anything. If you like harems and need a new one to get into, I can guarantee you that this one will be satisfying, as long as you're cool with comedy taking the reins over drama.

I think the majority of users who’ve left a rating for this show didn’t make it past episode 3. I’ll be straight: the first two episodes are BAD, and the third is very mid. I nearly dropped the show myself, but I have a goal this year to finish even the trash shows I start in 2024.
I’m glad I didn’t drop it, because things get really good in episode 4. I’m not sure if the author needed time to get his comedy down, but every joke in the first three episodes landed completely flat for me. However, the first few minutes in episode 4
...
actually had me audibly laughing, much to my surprise, and the episode continued on this good trend of “wait, is this show ACTUALLY getting good??”
Then episode 5 comes and has one of the best and most well directed romance scenes I’ve seen in a long time. The scene’s combination of a having a good buildup, a complete drop in audio, and then just hanging in this moment for as long as it does makes it so impactful (despite its usage of typical romance clichés i.e. the phone ring and falling on top of each other).
And that’s the big thing about this anime overall: consistency. It lacks it. It has horribly boring and eye-rolling moments, quizzically outstanding moments, and then just mid moments. It’s all over the place. Each episode is like a fresh slate of quality: will it be good, bad, or average? Whether or not you’d be willing to deal with that to get the good stuff is up to you. I will say that the poorer writing of the later episodes is easier to shrug off, because at this point I had built up some sort of understanding of and appreciation for the characters and their developments.
Like I said, I definitely don’t blame anyone for writing this anime off as trash and dropping it within the first three episodes. But there is something here that I at least think is worth sticking with until the end. At least to see if its hilarious and impactful moments (amid a rubble of mid and bad) are as enjoyable and memorable to you as they were to me.

These three OVAs all take place during the time skip between Episodes 3 and 4 of Season 1. I ended up stumbling upon and watching them after I finished Season 2, and I’d honestly recommend anyone else do the same, despite the fact that they were released after Season 1 but before Season 2. There’s no MAJOR spoilers for Season 2 in these OVAs, but there are hints and nods to some minor spoiler stuff, especially in the first and second OVAs. I find that they’re a lot more enjoyable if you’ve watched until the end of Season 2 before starting. Let me get into
...
each to explain why.
OVA #1 - “Ilse’s Notebook: Memoirs of a Scout Regiment Member”
- This first OVA mostly deals with Hange as well as the Survey Corps before they’re formally introduced in the main story. It retains the serious tone of the series and is by far the most interesting OVA, as it is the most closely related to the main plot of Attack on Titan. However, it also spoils (or rather, it lessens the impact of) certain elements that appear in Season 2. I won’t get too far into detail, but watching this OVA before Season 2 would (in my opinion) take away from a couple of big surprises that occur. I’m not entirely sure why this OVA containing hints to these reveals was released before Season 2, but my guess is it was done to create more intrigue so people would be sure to tune into it? Idk, it certainly could be watched before Season 2, but I wholeheartedly believe viewers get the best overall experience if they wait to watch this OVA until after watching Season 2. Especially since the second OVA also follows this sentiment.
OVA #2 - “The Sudden Visitor: The Tortuous Curse of Youth”
- This second OVA gives more depth and backstory to Jean as it revolves around him, so his fans are going to get the most out of this one. Fans of Sasha will also get a treat since she has a lot of fun moments and screen time here. This OVA ramps up the comedy, so the tone is lighthearted and completely different from the regular show. It’s basically if AoT was a slice-of-life comedy show for an episode, so if you enjoy AoT more for its bleak and serious tone and don’t care to see the characters be uncharacteristically goofy, then this one probably isn’t for you. I for one found it to be a hilarious break from the norm. The reason I say it’s best to watch after completing Season 2 is that there is one specific joke that’s made in Pixis’ mind that lands A LOT harder if you’ve seen at least most of Season 2. It involves certain characters taking certain forms, and it left me laughing out loud, whereas if I had only seen Season 1 before watching, it probably would have only gotten me to breathe a tad more air out of my nose and carry on. Can’t really explain the joke more than that without getting into detail, and genuinely, it’s possible spoiler territory if you see it without the knowledge of Season 2. So just finish Season 2 first. Onto the next one.
OVA #3 - “Distress”
- Honestly, this one is completely skippable. It felt like I was watching an episode of Naruto from one of the later filler seasons. It’s the very definition of a boring predictable filler episode. This one can be watched right after Season 1, but unless you’re just craving additional AoT content and really like Marco, just skip this one. It really doesn’t add much to anything.
TL;DR
Watch these after watching S2 for best experience.
OVA 1 = Hange and is consistent with show’s tone.
OVA 2 = Jean + Sasha and is like if AoT was a slice-of-life comedy.
OVA 3 = Naruto filler episode level of boring, so unless you need your AoT fix, just skip it.
