In HSOD the characters find themselves laughing at the reminder that their are still human and in Skingeki no Kyojin man kinds hopes and dreams of ever leaving the walls are riding on people that have to change, loss themselves as human beings, to make achieve that. In both the changes leave the characters as something even worse than the very thing they are trying to beat.
